More Silent Speeches
By 1916, one would think, the public would be fairly well tired of watching silent pictures of politicians giving speeches. Surely there were records? Yet despite the strange insipidity of such things, here we have another picture, this time of Charles Evan Hughes, best known as a Chief Justice of the United States.
Mr. Hughes is fairly emphatic in his movements, moving his arms in brisk punctuation to whatever unheard words he spoke. Almost certainly, pieces like this were intended for cutting into news reels. Its survival as a separate piece is odd. Its value today is even less, but is, I suppose, of some value in case anyone is making a documentary of the era.
