- Richard and Tory must put aside their differences if they want to survive on the island. When Richard spots a distinct bird, he convinces Tory they must be within 100 miles of land. The duo hatch an escape plan, but must first build an outlandish aviation machine to get them away from the island and back to civilisation.
- Satellite photos reveal construction on the island which was previously uninhabited. the drug enforcement agencies are alerted as the Govt thinks these are drug dealers. 2 narco policemen approach the beach in their boat. They find a huge ball of balloons, which bursts into flames in front of them.
Earlier, Tory and Richard are trapped in the nets. Richard is willing to forgive Tory only if he apologizes for spilling his gin. Tory does so. They then work together to get out of the nets. By swinging around Richard closer to the beach house, Tory allows him to grab a rope. Richard starts rubbing the rope against nylon, as nylon becomes weak and snaps when heated. The friction from the rope, heats up nylon and cuts it, allowing Richard to escape the net.
Richard spots a bird called the Hammond Flycatcher on the island. This bird migrates from central America to Canada, but cannot survive more than 100 miles off course. for that bird to be on the island, there has to be land, within a 100 miles of their island. They decide to get off the island by air. They erect the water wheel again. They cant build an airplane as they don't have enough material. They can build a helicopter as it has too many moving parts and is too precise. They can build a gyrocopter though. It is a simple machine and they need a lot of aluminum.
In a gyro copter the blades are turned by air, and it generates lift. the copter is moved forward by an engine that rotates a vertical fan to push it forward. They create a small prototype to see if the concept works. The prototype looks promising, but then it crashes. They make it fly eventually, but stability is an issue. They decide to build the machine. But it cannot carry both of them. Richard is one selected to fly it off the island, since he has a pilot's license. They need a rotor for their gyro copter. They creates the rotor blades from sheet metal of their roofs. The blades have to be pounded into the right shape.
They were out of gas, but they had hooch and hooch has ethanol. Engines can run on ethanol. Richard created hooch on the island by fermenting fruit, with naturally occurring yeast. The yeast breaks down fruit into ethanol. Water boils at 100 degrees and ethanol at 78. So the trick is to heat the barrel between 78 and 100, and simply collect the condense the evaporated ethanol. They attach the blades to the gyro-copter. To test if they generate lift, the decide to pull the gyro-copter with Richard's car to see if the resulting wind generates lift in the copter, enough to lift Richard.
They fuel the car with ethanol and it works. The car drags the gyro-copter, which turns the rotor blades. The gyro-copter gradually lifts off the ground. It flies. They decide to use the car engine and fit a propeller to it, to push the gyro-copter forward. They next test the self propelled gyro-copter. The gyro-copter flies for real. It can turn, go up and down.. The only things is that the gyro-copter drinks fuel. It empties the whole tank in a few minutes of flight. Tory is heart broken. Richard feels bad for him
Tory then decides to blow all the condoms with air, to create a large balloon that could lift them off the island. They cant make helium, but they can make hydrogen. its lighter than helium. Tory uses his welding machine to create an arc under water to split the H2O molecule. Richard collects the hydrogen into the condoms and starts filling them up. Each balloon will lift 75 gms of weight. Richard weighs 75 kgs and Tory is 85 kgs. They will use the frame from the gyro-copter for a total of 235 kgs. They need 31,333 balloons.
Richard comes up with the frame from the gyro copter. He fits a rotating propeller at the back, driven by a bicycle pedal in the front seat. And it has a rudder for the back seat person to control and give the frame some direction. They remove the tyres to reduce the weight further. Finally, the balloons are ready and the duo are ready to leave the Island. But the balloons create static electricity, which create a spark, which ignites the hydrogen. The whole contraption blows up. Thats when the narco officer show up on the beach. The duo are arrested and taken away. When rescued Richard admits that he hid the sail, as he didn't want to leave the island. Plus, it is revealed to the police that Clarkson is just a dummy.
