- In Belgrade, Mac and Desi are working as waiters at a restaurant. As they work, they talk about how something could be wrong. Russ calls them over the earbuds saying that his cover is blown and he's coming in hot. He runs into the room, and Mac and Desi take out the guards. Desi is unable to break the shatterproof window out, but Mac breaks it with a combination of fire and ice. As they prepare to jump, Desi asks Mac if he wants to do it, and Russ tell Mac to just agree to meet Desi's parents.
Later, Mac and Desi go to the house of Desi's family. Mac rehearses their names and likes with Desi as they go up to the front door, and Desi complains that her brother Simon is the "golden child" She says that she's worried about how she'll fit in, and Mimi greets them at the door and calls them in.
At Phoenix, Riley and Wilt are discussing Mac meeting Desi's parents for the first time. Mac is texting with Wilt, and Wilt insists that he's being a supportive friend. Desi would rather he help her with the security upgrade she's running. Matty calls in from where she's at a high school science fair, with Russ. They're there to recruit a prospective new member, Eli Brown. Eli beats all of the 200 competitors at the science fair, recruiting a classic car into electric.
Russ isn't impressed with Eli or their new policy of recruiting civilians. He points out that Eli has been expelled from the last six schools, and they go over to talk to Eli. Matty introduces herself and asks to speak to Eli and his foster parents, and he says that he always wins so his parents aren't there. Eli gets in to meet some people, tells Matty that he doesn't have any interest in saving the world, says that he's in it for the money, and he leaves. Russ is impressed.
At the Nguyen home, Mac tries to talk to Simon, who is busy on his phone texting. Desi comes in the kitchen and Simon says that she threw out her back, but he took care of it. Once he leaves, Mac figures that Simon doesn't like him.
Mimi and her husband Danh come in, and talk about how Desi has brought a lot of men home. Danh says that Desi is more "go with the floor", and thinks works as a security guard. They go to the kitchen to get more food, and Simon comes in and says that he has to go. Desi quickly excuses herself and Mac to "go to the market".
Once they're alone at the medical school morgue where Simon works, Desi tells Mac that she needs an objective opinion about Simon because she's paranoid. She figures that Simon is in some kind of trouble. They hear Simon talking to some people in the next room, and Mac rigs a microphone out of a morgue drill. Mac and Desi listen in, and hear the man Simon is talking to saying that they're going after his parents.
Eli comes out to his car, and finds Matty there. She still wants to recruit him. Russ calls her over and points a jogger that has gone by for the third tie. A man yanks Eli out of his suit, and Eli runs. The jogger chases after him, and Russ and Matty drive off after Eli, Russ knocks the man down with an open car door, tells Eli to get in, and drives off with him. They drive down a street, and Eli says he has no clue why the men are after him.
Once the man leaves, Mac and Desi confront Simon. They say that they want to help, but Simon says that he can handle it and asks why Desi is there. They argue about how Desi left, and Mac tells them that they're going to have to work together to help their parents. Simon gives in and says that he needs to pull some files and introduces them to Mr. Lao... one of the corpses in the morgue.
Matty and Russ pull into a nearby parking lot and Matty calls in with Riley. She says that she's been checking WITSEC. Eli doesn't know why he was in WITSEC, and Wilt spots the men who tried to abduct Eli pulling into the parking lot. Riley figures they have access to CCTVs, and Eli asks Russ and Matty to let him help.
Matty agrees, and Eli hacks a nearby car's auto-park feature so they can self-drive it. Matty has Eli settle down and walk him through slowly turning the car's features on. Once he does, he drives the car into a nearby fan. The thugs go over, and Russ and Matty drive off with Eli.
As they drive through the city, Matty sends Riley the plates of the car the men were in. Riley confirms that the men are FBI.
Simon says that Lao was a postal worker, and he thinks Lao was murdered despite an initial determination of suicide. Simon delayed a file on the cause of death, and a man has shown up and told Simon to sign off on "suicide" or he'll come after Simon's parents. Mac suggests that Simon contact the man but says that he needs a few hours, which will give them time to sweep the crime scene. Desi and Simon agree.
Eli and Russ check the car for a tracking device, and Eli admits that he might work together after he makes a bank. Russ finds the tracker and shows it to Matty, and then smashes it. Riley discovers that the agent who signed out the vehicle was suspended, figuring he was dirty. Russ works out that Eli's Social Security number finally came up. They need someone originally connected to the case to identity why Eli was put in WITSEC. There's one agent who is no longer with the agency: Elliot Mason. Matty figures Mason won't help them, and Russ admits that he knows where they can find Mason.
Using a cell phone trace, the trio go to the apartment where Mason is working, guns drawn. Mason complains that it took them long enough, Mason says that he no interest in coming after them now that his son and Mac's father is dead. He tells them to get out, and Matty calls Eli in. Mason recognizes the teenager, takes him by the shoulders, and calls him "Xiang".
Mac, Desi, and Simon sneak into the house with the crime scene, and Mac notices all of Lao's family photos. Desi notices a Vietnamese market in one of the photo, and Mac notices that all of the photos have the shop owner in them. Wilt and Riley do some digging, and discover that there's a shell corporation that connects Lao to the market. It turns out Lao was a multimillionaire that inherited all of the land but never sold. Port Madison Inc. out of Sacramento made the last offer, and they are under criminal investigation.
Simon spots oxygenated bleach, and he and Mac split up to search the laundry room and the kitchen. While Mac searches, Desi complains that Mac isn't giving her "emotional backup. She admits that she wanted some emotional backup, and Mac tells her that it isn't her job that is getting in the way of her family relationships.
Simon comes back with some of the bleach, and Mac explains that the blood came from the killer since there were no wounds on Lao. The killer's blood must be there... and his DNA along with.
Mason serves tea to Eli and tells him that his real parents were Chinese nationals living in the U.S., with connections to the Chinese Defense Ministry. The man says that they were heroes and loved Eli, and Mason and his partner Joshua were in the FBI when the parents came to them with information about a mole in the FB. They agreed to give the information if Mason got them and Eli into WiTSEC. Eli's parents were spies, and Mason figures that the mole discovered them in the U.S. By the time Mason got to them, it was too late to save them. Mason put Eli in WITSEC and altered Eli's files so no one could find him.
Matty wonders what the mole wants, and Mason says that the parents kept the burner phone with information about the mole. Eli was 5 at the time and doesn't remember, and Russ suggests that they take Eli back to the location where his parents were murdered, and walks him back through there. Mason offers to make them a map, and Matty says that they need his direct help. She reminds him that he owes them for what he did to Phoenix. Mason says that his saving Mac's life was his payback, and Matty asks if his son would want Mason to help Eli.
After a minute, Russ gets out a gun and says that he's going with them.
Simon finds a table bumped to the right. Desi determines other furniture was shifted slightly, and Mac works out how the murder was committed and where Lao pushed the killer. He figures Lao hit his head on the back of a table, and the killer fell into a floor vent. Mac removes the vent panel and pulls a red hair out of the filter. Two men burst in, and the trio drive them off. They run out to their car and drive by, and Simon is impressed with Desi's fighting ability. Riley gets the plate info and confirms that it belongs to Port Madison, and Desi tells Simon to go to the police and tell them what they found, while she and Mac get the Nguyens.
Matty, Russ, and Mason take Eli to the countryside road where Eli's parents were killed. Eli stands next to the three where they were killed, but Eli doesn't remember at first. Matty walks him through remembering, and Eli remembers the night where they were killed. He remembers the store where his parents got him email, and how later a SUV drove them off the road... and Mason was the one chasing him.
Mason admits that he was there following a lead, and he chose to rescue Eli over chasing the SUV. Eli doesn't believe him and runs off... while someone in a SUV watches them from deeper in the woods.
As they drive to the Nguyen house, Desi calls Mimi to get out of the house with Danh.
Riley runs a trace on ice cream shops matching the one that Eli described, and finds one nearby. The apartment building there is closed down, and Mason figures Eli will finally get to close the book on his parents' murder. They go back to their car, and see Eli being taken away by the men at the high school. The trio go after them.
In the SUV, Joshua tells Eli that they need to get into his brain and figure out what he remembers.
Mac and Desi enter the Nguyen house, and Danh attacks them. Mac easily blocks the attack, and he and Desi barricade the door. They hear a car pull up, and Desi sends her parents to hide.
Matty, Russ, and Mason go to the closed-down apartment. They go in and Mason finds a can of varnish that Eli "accidentally" knocked over. They follow the resulting footprints to a door and break in, guns drawn. Joshua comes out, holding a gun to Eli's head. Mason recognizes his partner, and Joshua says that no one will get out of there alive until he gets the burner phone.
The four thugs break into the house, and Mac and Desi take them on. One of them gets by the agents and runs up the stairs, and Desi goes after him. Danh tries to attack the thug with one of her trophies, and Desi comes in and attacks the thug but he knocks her out. Danh hits him from behind, and Desi recovers and tells him not to touch her father. The other thug gets away from Mac and gets in, and Desi takes him out while one of the last two thugs takes the couple out.
The third thug arrives, and Desi tackles him and knocks him out of the window onto the ground below. As the last thug prepares to kill Desi, Mac runs out with a taser he made out of a minivac, and tasers the thug unconscious as the police arrive.
Joshua tells the trio that if he gets the phone, they walk out with Eli. Mason offers himself for Eli, so Joshua can bring him in as a wanted man. Meanwhile, Eli remembers where his father hid the burner phone in the apartment, where they used to live.
Russ shoots out the fuse box, and Mason takes out Joshua's man in the darkness. Eli grabs the phone and Joshua shoots Mason when Mason tries to protect Eli, and Russ shoots Joshua. Mason says that he's wounded but not dead, and removes the FBI Kevlar vest he was wearing beneath his swear. He tells Matty and Russ that they got what they wanted and then left.
As Matty and Russ take Eli home, he tries to negotiate his arrangement with Phoenix. Eli wonders where Mason goes, and Matty says that he escaped but left the phone with the evidence... and their photos of Eli. As Eli goes in, Matty smirks when Russ says that they're looking at "their" future.
Desi goes to her bedroom and looks at the shattered trophy that Danh used. Mimi comes in and talks about Desi's childhood, and Danh comes in as well. Desi breaks into tears, and apologizes for not coming around more often. Her parents figure that whatever she does is dangerous, and Danh apologizes for their ever doubting her. Desi says that she's going to stay for a few days, and Mimi asks her if Mac can stay before Desi hugs her parents.
