Bitter beauty
TheLittleSongbird7 June 2021
Of all the habitats seen in 'A Perfect Planet', the Gobi desert is easily the one most unfamiliar to me. Have very rarely seen it covered in nature documentaries and the same can be said with its inhabitants, so the episode with the most unique sights. Having loved the previous two episodes of the series, "Weather" had a lot to live up to and am always fascinated to see what impact the weather conditions have on the environment, the animals and the drama it can bring.

"Weather" was an equally wonderful third episode. One would think understandably that a habitat that has such a bleak and brutal look would not have much to it, but actually 'A Perfect Planet' does manage to make a beautiful and very interesting episode focusing on it with "Weather". Of the five episodes, it may not be the most emotionally investable one or most diverse one, but with it having the most unfamiliar content and with a habitat unlike many seen before in nature documentaries "Weather" was one of the more illuminating instalments.

Like the other episodes of 'A Perfect Planet', "Weather" can't be faulted when it comes to the production values. The Gobi desert is the most unforgiving of all the habitats explored in 'A Perfect Planet', where one can literally feel the windsweep and bitter cold, but there is something oddly beautiful about it too. The very atmospheric way it's photographed really does help, especially in the travel across the desert where it was easy to root for the search for moisture to be successful but feel concern too.

The music has presence without over-dramatising and is never too much of one emotion. The narration is thought-provoking and educational, and despite its heavy subject dealing with the weather it was not as over-serious as feared despite what is said about climate change. Attenborough delivers it authoritatively and sincerely.

Plenty of amazing sequences here. Although there are some familiar types of animals, such as ants, crabs and turtles in a very large group, it was footage depicting them in a way not seen before. There are unfamiliar sightings too, such as the rare chance of seeing the last Batican camels on film. One of my favourite scenes of the series was the travel around the desert searching for moisture and how the herds converge, that was captivating to watch.

Overall, wonderful. 10/10.
