Go Henry & other Indonesia's cineast
otonce21 April 2009
Aside from some frailties here & there, I still think film Sepuluh is worth to watch. Why?

Firstly because Indonesia's film industry has just woke up from his long sleep for more than a decade. Therefore this film and many others also are good to wake up and excite the market.

Secondly, the story (about street kids, illegal organ trade) in this film is rarely being presented in Indonesia.

Thirdly, I am satisfied with quality of the picture, even though it was taken with digital camera. I heard they use the latest camera digital (RED). This film is the first to use such camera in Indonesia.

I recommend you not to watch it...

Warning: Spoilers
The big debut by Henry Riady. Still 19 years old, Henry already started making his first movie. With backups from his family's big name he make the billions of rupiah movie about the life of street kids.

From the story, it's easily recognizable that Henry stole other people's main idea, which is the movie "Joshua oh Joshua". A story of a kid who separated from his parents. Sepuluh also suggest the same old story.

The worst thing about this movie is in the ending part where the scene is taken in Siloam Hospital, Lippo Village, Indonesia. The villain said to bring the victim (the kid who is separated from her parents) to a hospital. The mom also told that the kid is brought to a hospital without being informed of the name of the hospital. Then suddenly the mom knows which hospital it is. It's crap.

Then it's kinda weird that the kid, who is brought to the hospital, is planned to be asassinated and her body organs is going to be sold. Which bad guy is going to ask a hospital to kill and take body organs from a 10 years old kid?? The status of the mother is also unclear. As a maid she can provide hundreds of thousands of rupiah for the kid whereas Indonesian maid, the so called 'pembantu' is usually paid for Rp 700 000 ($1=Rp12000). It's just,well...weird.

Even though Henry Riady is a Biola University student his quality does not show so. There are lots and lots of mistakes and weird scenes happened through out the movie. The quality of the movie with the budget spent for the movie is not balanced.

Recommended to ignore any suggestion that recommends you to watch it.

Sepuluh the movie

Warning: Spoilers
The film itself has flaws, it is not perfect. But for a 19 year old, i would say it is as good as it gets. The story is different from Indonesian films that are simply either horror or cheap love. This film is brave enough to do something different, and for that i salute this film. And to give credit to Henry, the director, he did fund the film himself without the help of his family since the same applies to his brother, which i heard started a businesses but did not get help from the family (to reply to the person who gave one star)

Its not a short film, 1 hour 52 minutes, and although the middle could be shorter, both ends of the film was good. It gave a fresh breeze of hope to indonesian film-making. The film talks about true love, and it is not about a boyfriend and girlfriend, but about a parents love to their children. And true love is willing to die for the loved one. But there is hope and unity at the end - I wont spoil the ending.

When i watched the film in Blitz (Digital) (i sneaked in to see a portion of it), it was much better to when i watched it in 21 (Celluloid). The image was sharper, the color was less washed out. I don't know what happened but the 35mm copy was off. Probably also because of the projectors that are never maintained. So hopefully the DVDs will be better than the theatrical releases.
