Ralphie (Clint Howard), son of the vegetable store owner (Herbert Ellis), brings to Patty three kittens he's trying to sell since his mother won't let him keep them. Ross and Patty buy them with plans to resell at profit to a wealthy neighbor wishing to buy kittens. They quickly find the "plain alley cats" aren't the pure breed the neighbor desired. Patty and Ross place an ad in the newspaper and hide the cats in the basement from the rest of the family. They work out a deal at a loss with Ralphie, but one of the kittens is missing. Cathy, meanwhile, has found it and taken it in. When another one sneaks away, Natalie finds it and tries to talk Martin into getting a kitten for Ross to learn responsibility. Martin has made his own discovery. When he says they can only keep one, the complications deepen, as each try to position their kitten.
