The dual Hollywood strikes wiped out much of the scripted programming this fall on the linear networks. And yet, according to Variety‘s annual list of the year’s 100 most-watched primetime telecasts, we actually watched more entertainment fare this year. CBS’ “NCIS” led the pack in 2023 with 12 episodes making the list, followed by the Eye’s “Blue Bloods,” with five.
Among regular episodic entertainment fare, the ranker included 35 entries — and it was represented by a wider range of shows. Part of that is because Paramount Network’s “Yellowstone” only aired one episode in 2023, freeing up more space for others.
Besides “NCIS” and “Blue Bloods,” other regular series with multiple episodes on the ranker include CBS’ “FBI,” NBC’s “Chicago Fire” and CBS’ “Young Sheldon,” at four each. On the news front, CBS’ “60 Minutes” continues to be a dominant force (its NFL lead-in doesn’t hurt), landing seven slots this year.

The more things change, the more things stay the same.
That may as well be the motto for the five broadcast networks heading into the 2023-24 season as their corporate parents are increasingly focused on cutting costs, restructurings and streaming. To that end, three of the five networks have made leadership changes in the past year.
The biggest change comes at The CW, which is now majority controlled by Nexstar with former Pop topper Brad Schwartz now tasked with making the younger-skewing network profitable for the first time following the unexpected departure of TV’s longest-tenured president, Mark Pedowitz. Over at CBS, Kelly Kahl and his top lieutenant Thom Sherman and their sizable paydays were bounced in favor of former head of current Amy Reisenbach. Over at Fox, Charlie Collier — who led the network following the sale of its studio counterpart — bailed for Roku with the broadcaster tapping unscripted chief...

Prime Video is pulling back on its previous Season 2 renewals for A League of Their Own and The Peripheral, with the streamer canceling both shows. According to Deadline, the scripted shows’ renewals have been rescinded and are considered a casualty of the ongoing writers and actors strikes as Prime Video’s decision reportedly stems from the length of the work stoppage. The ongoing delays have forced some previously planned projects to miss their target release dates, therefore resulting in this determination. Chloe Grace Moretz in The Peripheral (Credit: Prime Video) It isn’t the first time a streamer has gone back on a renewal as various series were canceled despite renewals amid pandemic-related constraints. Per Deadline‘s report, The Peripheral and A League of Their Own may not be Prime Video’s only casualties as more series renewals could be rescinded and there might not be pickups if the work stoppage stretches beyond Labor Day.

The CW has renewed Superman and Lois for a 10-episode fourth season, following months of negotiations. It will be the last remaining DC series on the network next season.
Superman & Lois, which was part of the CW’s Arrowverse, was one of three shows on the network — all from Warner Bros. Television and studio-based Berlanti Productions — which were awaiting renewal decisions, alongside All American: Homecoming and Gotham Knights.
As reported by Deadline earlier this evening and later confirmed by the CW, Superman & Lois and All American: Homecoming are getting picked up for next season alongside previously renewed tentpoles All American and Walker. Freshman series Gotham Knights has been canceled.

Nexstar Media Group revealed Monday it is set acquire a 75 majority stake in the CW Network from Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery, more than six months after first beginning negotiations for the deal.
Warner Bros. Discovery (formed through the recent merger of WarnerMedia with Discovery) and Paramount (rebranded from ViacomCBS earlier this year) have co-owned the network since early 2006, when the WB and Upn were merged after nearly a dozen years on the air into a single entity, so named for the “C” in CBS and “W” in Warner Bros. Both Paramount and Wbd will each retain a 12.5 ownership in the CW and continue to produce content for the broadcaster upon close of the sale, which Nexstar expects will happen during the current third quarter.

"Spider-Man: Freshman Year" is perhaps one of the most interesting future Marvel projects currently in development. After all, its title and school setting seems to suggest that the animated series would take place after the massive memory wipe made by Peter (Tom Holland) at the end of "No Way Home." However, that's not necessarily the case.
As it turns out, "Freshman Year" won't take place in Earth-616, according to Marvel Studios Head of Streaming, Brad Winderbaum. In a new interview with ComicBook.com, Winderbaum elaborated on how the show follows the burgeoning Spider-Man as he makes a critical choice that sets him apart from our MCU...
