Now in the present of 1938, the Mowbray family welcome the arrival of eldest daughter Stella and her son Helmut. Now married, she finds that while some things remain the same, other things have changed. Baptiste has become involved in political activity, which sees him come into conflict with Father Toussaint and a threat to his job as a school teacher. Meanwhile Stella still holds affections for Andrew, but is stunned to discover that he is now with Cornelie and suffering from TB.
