"You're just jealous because my power is better than your power"

Warning: Spoilers
"Some Like It Hoth" is an episode that I approached with lowered expectations: for one thing, the title is a pretty lame pun, and for another, it centers on Miles who, let's face it, after his first few episodes, has largely been used as the comic relief, especially now that Sawyer is playing it more serious. However, it turned out better than expected. It still has the same problems of the other Season 5 Dharma-heavy episodes: we still haven't learned much substantial stuff about their operations (even the Orientation films have been more informative!), and the "whatever happened, happened" theory is so blindly accepted by most of the characters that it makes them frustratingly passive (which is why I liked "He's Our You" so much - because Sayid did NOT accept it (of course, he hadn't even heard of it)(where is Sayid by the way?)). As for the identity of Miles' father, it is no big surprise. On the positive side, this episode finally builds up some tension near the end by having Phil discover "LaFleur"'s involvement in the kidnapping of young Ben. The Hurley-Miles conversations are often amusing, just like they were in "Whatever Happened, Happened". The return of the beautiful Naomi is a most welcome pleasure for the eyes and ears. But the best part of the episode is easily the revelation that there is a THIRD group of people interested in the island (""what lies in the shadow of the statue?"), apart from Widmore's team and Ben's "team". And it is now confirmed that some of these people are already on the island (via flight 316), setting the stage for a major and complex war. Oh, and we also learn why Miles had asked Ben to pay him exactly 3.2 million dollars to pretend that he never found him. And you thought that the writers don't answer the minor mysteries!!! *** out of 4.

Back to best

I thought this was the best episode in a while in the new series of Lost. I have followed this programme religiously and to say that I have been disheartened by most of the episodes is an understatement! However, this episode has changed my mind.

It follows Miles and his life and some very interesting twists involving him and an original member of the islands Dharma initiative.

This episode is quite a deep and emotional episode and is done relatively well. It comes as a nice surprise and even though there is no action it in no way detracts from the watch-ability of the episode.

The episode also sees the return of one favourite character showing their true nature and also the return of a very interesting person My faith in Lost is now back!

Getting to know Miles
TheLittleSongbird10 August 2018
When 'Lost' was in its prime, it was must-watch television. Remember first watching it, found it remarkably easy to get into, was hooked from the start and was on Season 3 by the end of one week. The general consensus is that the final season is a disappointment and cannot disagree.

Season 4 was a solid season, with high points such as "The Beginning of the End", the three part finale and particularly "The Constant" and the only disappointments (though they were still decent) being "The Other Woman" and "Eggtown". "Because You Left" couldn't be a better way to start Season 5, definitely among the stronger 'Lost' season openers and one of the most confident and most settled. The episodes between that and this were also good to great, the weakest being a long way from low-points.

"Some Like it Hoth" is a very good episode, albeit not one of the show's best. It's taut and thought-provoking, providing some questions as well as some answers here. The on-island events are emotional and above all gripping.

On top of all that, it shows plot progression rather than repeating itself or being filler as such. Admittedly there are episodes that advance the characters more, Miles is the most developed character here, and having content that enhance the mystery and make it go somewhere. There are surprising moments and also illuminating ones, with a major revelation that leaves one floored. It was great having development to Miles and having an episode centred around him.

Also found "Some Like it Hoth" to be an episode full of entertainment value, tension and emotional moments. The more dialogue-driven parts is a case of it being thought-probing, relevant and adding a lot rather than slowing things down and rambling. The character dynamics are surprising and with interesting perspectives and the little shocks do shock. The episode is not action heavy but it's not dull either.

Can't fault the performances, particularly from Ken Leung, with some of his best acting and character writing of the show.

Nor the stylishness and atmosphere of the visuals, nor the effectively understated and chilling use of music, taut writing and the tightly controlled direction.

Summing up, very good. 8/10 Bethany Cox

I Talk to Dead People
claudio_carvalho19 April 2013
Miles recalls when he discovered his ability to talk to the dead. When Horace asks Miles to bring a package from Radzinsky, Miles finds that it is a body bag with the corpse of a Dharma worker and finds how he died. Then Horace asks him to deliver the body to Dr. Chang and Hurley discovers what Miles is doing. Meanwhile Roger suspects that Kate has abducted Ben; Miles does not erase the videotape from the surveillance camera and Phil finds that Sawyer and Kate have delivered Ben to the hostiles.

In this episode, the comfortable life of Sawyer and Juliet is near to end with the discovery of Phil. The story is predictable and does not show any new plot point or resolution of mystery. My vote is six.

No action=disappointing
JackShephard198917 April 2009
I was sure Lost was going to be better and better but this episode is really disappointing. Why? First of all nothing special really happens.Don't expect that mysteries will be revealed in this episode cause you'll be very disappointed. But not only no mystery is revealed but there is no action(in fact it's hard for me to complete the 10 lines). It focuses on a character that personally i don't really like and what he discovers about his family is like in a soap movie. In my opinion i don't think that anything that is shown in this episode will really influence the final of this series or this season. Anyway Lost is really one of the best TV series and i hope the next episodes will be better.
