ObituarySome of Krishnamoorthy's well-known Tamil films include 'Thenali', 'Naan Kadavul', 'Bharathi' and 'Imsai Arasan 23aam Pulikesi'.Tnm StaffNational award winning art director P Krishnamoorthy, known for his work in Tamil films like Bharathi and Imsai Arasan 23aam Pulikesi, passed away in Chennai on December 13, Sunday, due to age related ailments. The five-time National Award winner was 77. A resident of Madipakkam in Chennai, Krishnamoorthy’s last rites will be held at his house on Monday afternoon. Born in the coastal town of Poompuhar, Krishnamoorthy entered the film industry with Gv Iyer’s Hamsa Geethe in 1975, a Kannada film. This film, based on the life of 18th century Carnatic musician Bhairavi Venkatasubbaiah, received two National Awards post its release. Krishnamoorthy's first National Award was, however, for Madhvacharya, directed by Gv Iyer. The two have worked in films such as Adi Shankaracharya (1983), Madvacharya (1986) and Ramanujacharya (1989). Krishnamoorthy was a passionate artist even as a child.

Sex trafficking, knife fights, and talking teddy bears. Miruthan and Tik Tik Tik director Shakti Soundar Rajan is back with his latest wildly out-there feature in Teddy. Starring Arya, who cult film fans might know from his starring role in Bala's film Naan Kadavul (I Am God) where he played a cannibalisitic ascetic Aghori attempting to make it back to civilized society. There isn't anything online about the plot of Teddy just yet, but this trailer gives us a ton of action mixed with extremely broad comedy and a hint of Mark Wahlberg's Ted in the mix. Whatever it is, it looks fun and I am into it. Director Rajan is well known for pushing the envelope with high concept ideas in Tamil cinema, especially...

National award winning director Bala who won the accolade for his film Naan Kadavul, a grim portrayal on the beggar mafia, never tires of showering praise on his mentor Balu Mahendra. It was the late cinematographer-director who took Bala under his wing, taught him the ropes and enabled him to make his livelihood as a film director.
However, if one were to look hard and long at Bala’s oeuvres it would be difficult to discern even slight shades of his mentor's influence anywhere. The duo's choices always remained vastly different, even when it came to choosing genres.

Chennai, Aug 22: Actress Pooja Umashankar, who is returning to Tamil cinema with upcoming thriller "Vidiyum Munn" after a brief gap, says she is keen to work in a children's film if given an opportunity.
Pooja was last seen in 2009 Tamil drama "Naan Kadavul".
"I love to work with kids because you don't feel the pressure of working when you have them around you. I would be more than happy to star in all kids' film. This is why I didn't hesitate to play a cameo in Tamil film 'Drohi' as a teacher to kids," Pooja told Ians.
On her return, Pooja is not bothered about competition as she feels there is enough room.

You may not know who Dhanush is, but you should. At the tender young age of 29, Dhanush K. Raja has already made a name for himself as one of the most talented actors in India, specifically in the Tamil film industry. While Bollywood take most of the glory, it is Tamil filmmakers like Bala (Naan Kadavul), Mani Ratnam (Bombay, Kadal, Dil Se), and Dhanush's own brother Selvaraghavan (Mayakkam Enna) have made the Tamil industry into the prestige industry. Dhanush has a pair of high profile projects on the immediate horizon, both of which we'll be covering, but the first is a Tamil feature from Hari Om director, Bharatbala titled Mariyaan. There's been a teaser floating around the Internet for weeks, but there wasn't much...

You may not recognize his name, but Tamil director Bala made something of an international splash back in 2009 with his film Naan Kadavul (I am God). The film was featured on these very pages and played at Fantastic Fest 2010, so Bala is not an entirely unknown quantity to the genre film world. Still, not many Tamil filmmakers make it out of the region in general. Bala's last film was a comedy titled Avan Ivan that tanked at the box office and left critics cold, however, Paradesi looks to be taking a much firmer stance, and so far it looks pretty damned good. Here are a few words about the film from a website which claims to be official:Director Bala has his own ways...

Hyderabad, Oct 15: Bala is a well known director in the Tamil film industry. He comes to rescue the actors' careers by offering them to star in his films. Till date he has played a great role in several actresses careers. Just like his film "Naan Kadavul" gave actress Pooja the right break. She played the role of a blind singer.
The film also received national awards. Bala's film "Pithamagan" made Laila a star, while "Nanda" also improved the lot of actress Sangeetha. And now a new heroine wants to work with this talented.

It's only been a couple of years since Ronnie Screwvala took his multimedia conglomerate, Utv Motion Pictures, into the south of India. Utv is the biggest studio in India, and in 2011, the controlling stake in the company's stock was purchased by The Walt Disney Corporation. This transition has really seemed to up the speed at which Utv seeks to take over all of Indian cinema, not just the Hindi film industry, on which they've had a very firm grip for the better part of a decade. In the service of that goal, they've released several big budget features with big South Indian stars including Arya (Naan Kadavul) in Vettai, Kamal Hassan in Unnaipol Oruvan, and Vikram in last year's breakout hit, Deiva Thirumagal. A distressed father returns to the city of Kasi to find the son that he'd abandoned years earlier after scores of priests had warned him that the boy would bring darkness down upon his family and village. When he finds the boy, now grown into a young man with a thick lion mane of hair and a penchant for mild-altering substances, he learns that he has become an Aghori, one of a sect of Hindu holy men who live in graveyards, meditate constantly, and daily proclaim themselves to be God. The Aghori agrees to accompany the estranged father back to their family home only so that he can officially cut all ties to his mortal life, and along the way encounters a network of deformed beggars whose lot is so desperate that only divine aid can save them.

If you took Alejandro Jodorowsky's El Topo, added some of Werner Herzog's Even Dwarves Started Small, set it to a Bollywood beat and kept the running time to 150 minutes you'd have. . . .a film of really limited appeal.
Despite Naan Kadavul being an award winner in India, it baffled the hell out of a private audience here at Fantastic Fest. But. . . .baffled us in a was that generated much respect. I mean, a dope-smoking deity joins forces with cross-dressing, disfigured beggars as they sing and dance themselves out of the cycle of reincarnation. That's, like, so ready for a Bruckheimer remake, right?
Is this a genuine epic? A comedy? A freak show? Not long ago I became quite enamored of Bollywood films, and I can tell you that this is one that does not fit the usual template.

I've been trying to find new info on interesting genre goings-on in India without much luck apart from Enthiran and Hisss, but in the process I stumbled across this trailer. It is for a film called Va Quarter Cutting, the meaning of which I'm not really sure, but the trailer looks really fun! From what I can tell, this is directed by a pair called Pushkar and Gayatri, and it follows the events occurring in one man's life between 6:30 Pm and 6:30 Am. Not an unfamiliar story, in fact, it is a very common story, but the filming style on this one looks pretty unusual for an Indian film. The cinematography and editing are very kinetic, I'd be interested to see if they can keep that kind of pace for three entire hours, I think that would make the time fly by. I can't find any translations for this,...

I am utterly amazed -- after only three days at Fantastic Fest, it feels like I've been at it a solid week. So many wonderful films and conversations, many that I'll share in later entries. I've yet to be in bed before 4 am, but it's been worth the lack of sleep to be part of the magic and chaos of Fantastic Fest. As a veteran attendee, the best advice that I can impart on newbies is to "go with the flow." Plans are great, but you never know when being in the wrong place at the right time means seeing firsthand why Fantastic Fest is what you make of it -- and there might be someone filming, more on that after the jump. The best part is seeing celebrities relaxing and enjoying the festival along with regular attendees, without fanfare or massive entourages.

With the Fantastic Fest 2010 just two weeks away, the “largest genre festival in the U.S.” has announced a third wave of films.
Included in the line-up are Summit Entertainment’s action-comedy Red, Darren Bousman’s Mother’s Day, and the stylized action flick Bunraku with Josh Hartnett and Woody Harrelson.
But I’m especially excited about the addition of Agnosia, a “romantic thriller” produced by Guillermo del Toro. ”I’ve read few screenplays in my life that have impressed me as much as Agnosia,” del Toro said. Spanish filmmaker Eugenio Mira directed.
Fantastic Fest is also hosting a special “Master Pancake Theater” (similar to Mystery Science Theater) to mock Independence Day with guest Bill Pullman, plus a Spaceballs quote-along. Finally, they have planned the world premiere of the SyFy movie Sharktopus, followed by the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Roger Corman and his wife, Julie. Again, I...

In a few weeks, Austin, Texas will be host to one of the most incredible genre film festivals in the world. While we sadly won’t be able to attend this year’s Fantastic Fest, we are having a blast covering it from afar. The fine programmers are slowly teasing out the incredible line-up of films, and special guests.
Just yesterday it was announced that Roger Corman and his lovely wife Julie will be receiving a lifetime achievement award from the festival, and I couldn’t be happier for all involved. I know this year has been tremendous for Roger, with all of the DVDs and Blu-rays that Shout! Factory have been releasing, the Comic Con panel that Shout helped organize, and now this award from Fantastic Fest, the Corman’s must be riding an incredible wave of joy. We’ve written about several of the Corman Collection releases over the past few months,...

Another round of programming announcements from Fantastic Fest includes the news that Robert Schwentke's graphic novel adaptation "Red," starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren as former CIA agents forced back into action, will be screening as a sneak preview at the festival, as will "Mother's Day," starring Rebecca De Mornay, the new film from "Repo! For the past 5 years, there hasn’t been any film that has actually witnessed a grand success both at box office and won critical acclaims as well. Indeed, the producers are so vexed as they’re giving up their film production. It looks like Media One Global Entertainment is also going through the same turmoil as their previous films have been terrific flops.
With both of their previous ‘Dhaam Dhoom’ and ‘Modhi Vilaiyaadu’ flunking terribly at box office, the producers are very much concerned about their next release ‘Chikku Bhukku’. Singam Puli has directed Ajith starrer Red and Surya starrer Maayavi. Now he is acting in character roles in 6 films. In an interview he said,” Bala called me to act in Naan Kadavul. While acting in this film I was also acting in the film Maayandi Kudumbhathar. Both the films earned me a good name. No I am acting I Goripalayam, Sengathu Man, Nandi, Avan Ivan, Virundhali and Thandavakone. I did the comedy role in Maayandi Kudumbhathar.
I got good reception for this. Now I will be doing different kind of roles. With regard to direction, it is not possible for me to leave it. Though I act, I have not stopped working behind the camera. I wrote the dialogues for Perazhagan and Renigunta. I will be directing a film from May. New faces are acting in this film and I am also donning an important role in this film.

Director Bala never wants to be the same this time. He has attempted to take off for a different flight of penning a full-fledged comedy script and will complete the project within short span of time.
The film is produced by Vasan Visual Media that had earlier produced his ‘Naan Kadavul’. This untitled film has Aarya, Vishal and Sarath Kumar’s daughter Varalaksmi in lead roles. Director Viji seems to have been roped in for penning dialogues for this film.
Since, there aren’t any official announcements about the film, Bala has decided to reassert the details about this project along with finalized list of cast and crew on January 11 through media channels.

A complete year of surprises as most of the actresses struck with glory in their second innings. Nayanthara and Trisha had a very disappointing year as their films flunked terribly at box office and fetched worst reviews for them.
Anushka: She made her debut with ‘Rendu’ that didn’t gain her more appreciations. But her comeback just swayed us out with ‘Arundhathi’ while she had to get herself in vain with Vijay’s ‘Vettaikaran’. She has got one more big ticket ‘Singam’ with Surya and she is already in favorite lists of directors and producers.
Tamannah: The slim beauty had the success knocking her doors continuously throughout the year. Padikadhavan, Kanden Kadhalai, Ayan and she won some good reviews for the underrated film ‘Anandha Thandavam’.
Saranya Mohan: This 20-year old girl has come up with pleasing works in ‘Vennila Kabadi Kulu’ and ‘Eeram’. Her Telugu film ‘Village Lo Vinayakudu’ was a great hit.

Followed by the grand success of ‘Naan Kadavul’, actor Aarya had signed nearly 5 projects including each in Malayalam and Telugu. The actor has almost completed shooting for Vijay’s ‘Madrasapattinam’, ‘Chikku Bhukku’ and Telugu movie ‘Varudu’ with Allu Arjun in lead and himself as a baddie.
Aarya was approached to perform a prominent role in one of the upcoming Malayalam films of Mohan Lal. The actor was affirmative to this approach and had accepted to take on the role. But now, he has walked out of the project as Bala has offered him lead role in his next film.
But Mohan Lal hasn’t been disappointed and ropes in Ganesh Venkatram as both of them share good rapport from ‘Unnai Pol Oruvan’.
