Masahiko Ôtsuka announced that this would be the final short film on which he would serve as director. However, he added that he might withdraw this decision if they offer him another opportunity on a Star Wars related project.

The 2022 book "The Art of Star Wars Visions" explains that the Elder follows neither the Jedi nor the the Sith code. He is a 'kensei' or 'sword saint', only interested in testing his skills against others. His outer robes resemble those of a Sith master, but underneath he wears a costume that mirrors the Jedi. The old man is modeled after the historical kensei Miayamoto Musashi, who eventually retreated from the civilized world to concentrate on mediation and writing books.
Of the nine different tales in Star Wars Visions, this is the only one set during the time of the Jedi Order, in peace time.
