The naval base the Skrulls enter is HMNB Clyde, which stands for His Majesty's Naval Base. HMNB Clyde is located in Faslane, Scotland, it is one of three naval bases in the United Kingdom, the other two being HMNB Devonport and HMNB Portsmouth. HMNB Clyde, besides being the Royal Navy's headquarters in Scotland, is the most heavily guarded and secured base in the UK as it is home to all of Britain's nuclear weapons. HMNB Clyde is the homeport for the Royal Navy's four Vanguard-class ballistic missile submarines, each submarine has 16 missile tubes for Trident II SLBM's (Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile), and each missile is armed with eight MIRV (Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicle) warheads, each warhead having a yield of 475 kilotons. The latest Strategic Arms Limitation treaty limits the number of missiles each submarine can carry to eight, but that is still an incredible amount of firepower, the total yield for all eight warheads in each missile is 3.8 megatons, making each submarine's total yield 30.4 megatons of TNT, giving a single submarine the potential to destroy eight cities the size of NYC or LA. The Trident II SLBM is made by the United States and is also carried by the US Navy's 14 Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines, in 1982 the UK signed a treaty with the US to purchase 65 Trident II SLBM's. In 1992 the UK decommissioned their WE-177 tactical nuclear bombs making the 65 Trident II's the only operational nuclear weapons in the UK.
The HMS Neptune is an Astute-class nuclear powered fast attack submarine, albeit a fictional one, as of 2025 there will be six Astute-class in service, it is a tradition in the Royal Navy for all submarines in a class to have the same first letter as the lead boat; as such the names of the six submarines of this class are: Astute, Ambush, Artful, Audacious, Anson and Agamemnon. The Astute-class is one of the fastest and quietest attack submarines in the world, it is 97 meters (318 feet) long, 11.3 meters (37 feet 1 inch) wide and 10 meters (32 feet 10 inches) high; it has a top submerged speed of 30 knots (56 km/h; 35 mph) and a crew complement of 98. Astute-class submarines have six 21 inch (533 mm) torpedo tubes and is armed with both Tomahawk cruise missiles and Spearfish heavy torpedoes.
