It's a PG-rated kids superhero movie - don't judge it as a movie made for adults
jimcancook14 August 2022
There are continuity gaps and characters are flat. It's CGI heavy. Everything is flashy and shiny and lots of stuff blows up. The jokes are intended for a grade-school audience. Not unexpectedly, the kids are smarter than the adults and end up saving the day.

Make some popcorn and spend an evening with your kids. There are worse things in life.

I wanted to love it being a fan of Owen Wilson, but he has limited screen presence here. The kids are not the best of actors, and one is not very likable. Some scenes demoted this movie from average to mediocre, unfortunately. But there are good parts and it is fairly enjoyable, especially if you watch it with kids. But seriously why should there always be a love interest in kids movies!! I mean 14 year olds should not be wasting 50% of their time thinking finding love at that age is critical to their survival in their culture. It sickens me such cliches and it adds nothing to the story or movie as a whole. I really miss the old kids "coming of age" movies, they had more substance, even the Sci-Fi ones. Nevertheless, I would recommend this one for tweens for a family night out.

Watched this with my nephew and it was a cute and funny one-time watch.
Top_Dawg_Critic24 August 2022
It was a little long and dragged out at 104 mins, but we still laughed, albeit at different parts. The story was a bit cheesy, but still watchable. I mean any comedy with Michael Peña and Owen Wilson is going to crack some laughs.

Trailer was better than the movie itself
mejaflora12 August 2022
Just based on the trailer and the humor in it, I thought this would be a decent afternoon family watch but after 15 mins of the usual stereotypical cliches. Same old daddy wasn't there to change my underwear issues, same old new hottie girl, same old extra tough girl, extra extra girl who is quite annoying by the way. Pretty much everything the blond girl did or say with the extra dramatic mouth thingie was annoying. Owen wilson looks pretty haggard and beat up not at all like an actual inspiring hero. Lines are meant to be funny but kinda felt forced and flat. Had to say too the title for this movie is really not good.

not sure what people were expecting
dean70118 August 2022
This is a PG kids movie along the lines of Spy Kids so it should be rated as such. Had some laughs and the kids enjoyed it. It's a 7, The people comparing it to Iron Man should give their head a shake. It's a kids movie and not a bad one.

ANOTHER SUPER-HERO FILM FOR CHILDREN, ONLY
drneglector-3419812 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Super-Hero movies are popular these days. This is another attempt at just that starring Owen Wilson as a secret defender of planet earth. His son and some friends accidentally opens the door to the Defenders headquarters which invites villains and suddenly the world needs saving.

The special-effects are not bad. But that's just not good enough, by itself, to make an interesting movie.

This is basically a children's movie about young stereotypes doing annoying stereotypical things.

There are some daddy/son issues going on under the surface of this film... but you will probably not care because that's just one of endless cliches in this film that got nothing new to offer.

Im not even sure if this film will sit well with children.

A secret hero
MB-reviewer18513 August 2022
Secret Headquarters (2022) felt like a better version of the Spy Kids movies, because this had a concept that felt like a Spy Kids movie, but it was more entertaining than those movies.

I liked Walker Scobell as Charlie Kincaid and Owen Wilson as Jack Kincaid/The Guard; they had a good father and son dynamic, and you can get behind Charlie Kincaid when his dad must leave to save the day as a hero named The Guard.

There are funny moments and there are good looking effects. The tech and The Guard's hideout look cool with advanced technology that can do things like portals and 3D printing weapons and suits.

The action scenes happen in the 3rd act climax, and it does look cool and there can be funny moments during them. I liked that the kids would use the advanced tech for normal things like baseball, because you know you would have done the same thing if you were a kid finding this kind of stuff.

Secret Headquarters (2022) was a fun and entertaining movie that I can see families coming together and enjoying for a movie night.

Waste of Movie $$
goodlinedesigns12 August 2022
Why did they make this movie? Terrible knock-off of 'Home Alone' meets 'Iron Man'.

Acting was very poorly done - even from the adults. Flat jokes.

This was a waste of money and time for everyone involved - including the audience.

Awful special effects and fighting sequences.

Bad writing and directing.

Nothing new but still fun
JJSM2212 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This film doesn't add anything new to the superhero genre but it still makes a great film to watch just for the fun of it. Walker Scobell definitely plays the part of funny, awkward teen well and his on-screen chemistry with Owen Wilson was excellent.

However like I said there's a lot repetitive tropes to superhero films present like something alien falling to earth, the high tech hero, evil billionaire etc. Sometimes the film is at its best when it's not being a superhero film and focuses on things like Scobell's character coming to terms with the truth about his father's repeated absence from his life.

The special effects were pretty good though and all the kids definitely did an amazing job.

Low Standard
rehmankhilji14 August 2022
To be honest, fell for the trailer, i was like this one ought to be a good one.

The moment it started till the very end, nothing, it offers nothing but just a worse superhero / ironman inspired movie.

Michael Peña, as funny bad guy, but that didnt work too, cause they forgot to add humor to the script after casting him.

Owen Wilson, well................... let's just forget about him

If you watch it, it will be okish, if you pass it on, nothing to loose.

Great for kids and parents ...family film
nataliedoll18 August 2022
I just finished watching it with my 9 yr old and we loved it. Plenty of laughs, fast paced, with fun likeable characters (including the villians lol). It was obviously made for a younger audience and on that note it hits well. The ppl complaining were probably hoping for marvel/DC level action but that's not what this is. It's more on the level of Spy kids but I personally think it was better than those films. We really enjoyed it its definitely one of the better kids movies I've seen in awhile. Dont listen to the bad reviews and give it a chance.

Enjoyable
honestreviews181612 August 2022
For a kids movie I'd say it's pretty enjoyable. I loved the comedy, and the action sequences were pretty cool. The gadgets they used were impressive and I enjoyed how they each had their own gimmick and learned how to use it. The acting could use some work but it was still fun to watch. I liked the casting I loved Walker Scobell after The Adam Project so it was nice seeing him playing other roles. I wouldn't watch it again but it's a good family movie for a movie night.

Don't watch it .
seagravestennett14 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Only reason I put it on was because Wilson was in it and within 20-minutes found myself turning it off due to the child actors if you can even call them that . More like no talented hyped up on sugar irritations . None of them should be cast in anything again. 100% different from the trailer . Complete and utter waste of money.

Only watched it because of the trailer
mdpapplications12 August 2022
But disappointed in the end.

It was a childish movie with a very boring story and lame unfunny comedy.

Not worth watching at all.

The trailer depicted some Iron Man vibe in it but not even close. It was awful.

Cringy in places
battlecrusadersgames15 August 2022
I am a little disappointed with this family movie. The trailer looked great and i love Walker and Owen, especially teaming up in a movie together. They could've actually been related they look + act so similar, sadly this is a bit of a mess.

The story revolves around Owen being a superhero who's kid finds his secret lair. Not really very secret then if a 12 year old can find it.

There are so many clichés and stereotypes it's ridiculous. There's the done to death absent Father, the cringey one-liners and most annoying of all, a stupid romantic sub-plot. Why do we need a romantic interest for a kid of 12? It just felt uncomfortable.

The special fx are Ok and Walker is charismatic as hoped, but sadly he is alone, as even Owen is rusty here. And please stop putting Michael Pena in movies. He's annoying in nearly everything.

I didn't hate this movie, but it was very cringey and poor story telling for most part.

Looking at the ratings, i see younger viewers enjoyed this more and i have to say, i'm not at all surprised, it really is aimed at kids. So maybe ask a kid if it's it's good instead. But IMO it was not up to scratch.

Boring is an understatement
janeandthegiantpeach13 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Walker is the only reason why I watched this movie & honestly, he would've been better off standing alone in this.

Also, a 14 year old girl interested in a 16/17 year old guy? That's very problematic.

This movie tried way too hard & could've been much better without adding in the extra kids.

Good Clean Action Fun
rolonthomas15 March 2023
I was very happy to stumble upon this fun family-oriented movie.

Finally, a decent movie that you can watch with the entire family. If you're like me and get tired of stumbling through movies that are rated "MA", "TV-MA", "R" or "PG-13" (and they slip in an F-bomb and/or an uncomfortable sex scene), then this is a refreshing movie.

Aliens, youth sports, school dances, espionage and superheroes are all part of this fast acting flick.

Some may be bored because they have become numb to wholesome entertainment but I welcomed it and I am looking forward to watching this again with my grandkids without having to worry about keeping my finger on the fast-forward button.

A Brainless Stereotypical Superhero Film For Kids
pbstarman14 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is for kids.....However, it is completely full of stereotypes. And the main character "Charlie" is completely demasculinized....his voice is even very much like that of a girl. The girls, of course, are the smart ones who figure everything out and are very much alpha male.

The story, which could have been really well written, instead portrays a superior "alien" technological secret headquarters that is accessed by clicking hanging metal balls together and then only needs a pass code to enter on a punchpad......allowing anyone who figures that out to enter the "secret headquarters? Really? How did it possibly remain secret for 10 years?

Owen Wilson, who I really like......plays Owen Wilson......can he act like a "character". I guess not. The Owen Wilson charm is worn completely thin on this film.

If you are looking for another Superhero movie to watch (like there aren't enough of them) with lots of CGI that is brainless and full of the same ol same ol stereotypical characters and scenarios and can entertain your kids....maybe this would be for them.....

Great movie for kids
wkettler14 August 2022
To be frank, I do not understand all the negative reviews saying this is just for kids. It is for kids. One look at the image for this movie and that is fairly clear. This is not great. It does not have a deep meaningful message and does not have content meant for the parents that may be watching it with their children.

That being said, it is not horrible to watch as an adult (I did laugh out loud a couple of times), and it is almost guaranteed that your children will like it.

how NOT to do an adventure film
A_Different_Drummer14 August 2022
Robert Rodriguez knows how to do these. This production team does not. Bad writing, bad casting, bad directing. The story makes no sense. The characters make bad choices. The key to a good film is viewer connection. There is none.

Too many adults who can't be a kid are reviewing this
toonarly16 August 2022
If your a "kid" at heart, you will enjoy this film. If your a bored adult who has no life and hates kids, then by all means go find another movie and don't watch this and then leave a mean review, it's a KID's movie, so put yourself in kid mode and have a great time. If you were these kids you'd love doing what they do and you know you would have. So have fun with the whole family, no woke junk, minimal violence and lots of action and great cgi. 😊

Fun kid movie
iamjamalwhite13 August 2022
Written for 6th graders but well done from start to finish. Unlike the recent Ryan Reynolds flick ADAM PROJECT about aliens, this one doesn't have a ton of inappropriate language and Daredevil level humor. We enjoyed it.

Fans of Owen Wilson shoud check out this creepy number: The Minus Man(1999)
Vivekmaru4513 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was a real let-down. A waste of more than one and a half hours. Robert Rodriguez directed a much better film than this called Spy Kids in 2001 and more entertaining.

This film is filled with over the top C. G. I. Garbage as with the case of majority of Hollywood movies these days.

The movie concerns a man who is given the power of the "Guardian"(akin to the Green Lantern franchise) and becomes the defender of planet Earth. He builds a secret hideout under his house that forms the headquarters of his secret operations. Unbeknownst to him, his son along with a few classmates, discover his lair.

The rest of the film concerns run-of-the-mill action sequences typical of movies of this sort. This is not a superhero film, rather an action science fiction film. I found the movie barely entertaining and would only recommend to diehard fans of Owen Wilson.

Stupid is understating what this vomit of the mouth was!
bstncld12 August 2022
The most ridiculous and unnatural dialog I have ever heard coming out of kids mouths in a movie. Stupid was an understatement for a description of this movie.

Good, cute, amusing but a tad predictable family watch.
justnarelle27 August 2022
Why all the hate? It may not deserve to be a ten, but it does deserve more than the 4.9 star rating it has been awarded. So the story is not new and a little predictable, it is still a nice way to spend an evening with the family. Come in with low expectations and you will find a movie with a litttle action, a little humour and choc full of kids getting to be the hero.

Think a cross between spy kids, goonies and iron man. Lots of cool gadgets and a little fun to be had. It may not blow your mind, but if your mind is open you might just enjoy it for what it is. All in all a safe family watch for everyone to enjoy.
