An example of why streaming is good
efd-104674 October 2022
The Serpent Queen is one of the most engaging shows out at the moment. Exceptionally well written and acted, it flows along and keeps you watching and waiting for the next instalment.

Samantha Morton dominates, delivering her lines effortlessly with both subtly and deadly force, she becomes Catherine and reminds you of how an actor can take you away.

While other shows with dwarves & dragons spend millions trying create atmosphere, this show does it with the English language.

Catherines story concludes as it does in history, I hope they pick another character from time and give it the same treatment.

Absolutely great, with a brilliant Samantha Morton!
johannes2000-16 November 2022
This series is really excellent. As any other series based on historical persons and events, it's a mixture of facts and fiction, and I'm totally okay with that, as long as the fictional parts don't wander off too far from what really COULD have happened. The story of Catherina de Medici's life (here pictured until the death of her first son and herself becoming the regent of France) is exciting and involving, the settings are beautiful and authentic, the costumes luscious, and the acting of all major parts is great. With special mention of Samantha Morton, she is absolutely brilliant as the scheming, highly intelligent and outwardly ice-cold Catherina, who still at a few times poignantly shows her inner emotions.

I still had a few minor reservations. The makers made Catherina and a few other major characters by means of a voice-over the narrators of the story, for me this didn't really add anything (unless at times some confusion as to the chronology), and they also let these characters at several unexpected moments step through the fourth wall to directly address us viewers, for which I didn't much care either. The dialogues of especially the male characters (the Bourbons, the Guises, Montmorency) had a very nowadays and thus a bit of an anachronistic ring to them, for instance the profuse use of the F-word in every other sentence. And the at times rude and condescending way with which some courtiers and members of the Privy Counsel addressed their royal superiors seemed to me rather improbable in those strict hierarchy-centered times.

But for the rest: a riveting and visually beautiful series, I can hardly wait for the second season!

Wicked, funny, sad, degrading
znsfh9 October 2022
Firstly, remember this is not a documentary. Its a show. A show on TV. Not sure why some are dissatisfied because it steers from actual. Its great fun and dark and twisted, and, wasn't it brutal in the 15 hundreds? Betcha it was.

I love the humour and style used in this. I stir up inside when I see the treatment of some. This makes me realize that the actors, writing, etc is so good that I start caring about the characters.

Samantha Jane Morton Is absolutely fantastic. Liv Hill Is also very good. Never seen Hill before but I will now look for her.

Im on episode 4 and I think I will wait until all the episodes are released because I hate having to wait to watch each one. Doing that with HoD.

I can't fault it.
destiny_west21 September 2022
Wow, The Serpent Queen is outstanding. Hear me out, I know I am only 2 episodes in, but I was hooked within ten minutes of the first episode.

The series is about Catherine De Medici ( a true person in history) and her rise into French Royalty to become Queen of France.

It is cleverly done, with Catherine relaying the tale to a servant girl.

Samantha Morton is amazing in her role as Catherine, and. The actress Liv Hill as the younger Catherine definitely holds her own.

This series so far is full of wit, magically costumed, and deeply fascinating.

If you love anything historical then this is for you. Don't let the word historical turn you off though. Honestly this series is addictive and brilliant.

Awesome
rickey1971-131-97858011 September 2022
I really didn't know what to expect from this show. Episode 1 was really perfect. Without giving away spoilers, it's really hard to give a full review. Samantha Morton and Liv Hill did an excellent job playing Catherine.

The acting, directing, and cinematography was spot on.

Charles Dance from The Game of Thrones was perfect as the Pope.

And Colm Meaney as King Francis was a great choice.

The tone of the first episode was tense, with relief later in the episode.

The bringing of Catherine's court was brilliant.

Breaking the fourth wall was an inspired choice, letting the viewer in on the inner thinking of the queen and queen to be.

The strength and cunning that Liv Hill and Samantha Morton give Catherine makes this a very exciting version of a historical figure.

As a first episode, it was awesome. The fact that it is a miniseries is a little disappointing.

This is an add on to my review. After watching the full series, it was so much better than what I had expected. If you like period pieces, you will love this original take on Queen and Mary. It's just so good.

Who cares if it isn't historically accurate
d-papadakis29 October 2022
One of my all-time favorites. Having watched Queen Margot many times which includes Catherine de'Medici I was curious but didn't know what to expect.

I was blown out of the saddle. This series is so good but most of all, it not being totally historically accurate, somehow the creators, actors, directors, and writers found a way to walk that high mountain edge between disaster and success with the skill of a mountain goat (sorry, bad remembrance of a line in Spartacus spoken by Crassus).

This series is a little "loose" but it is so much more entertaining because of it. The project could have easily gone over the top and turned into a disaster, BUT IT IS PERFECT.

I can say no more, I loved it so much and have to thank the entire assemble of artisans for their gift to us. They took a big chance, and it works!!!!!!!!!!!

Wonderful and very smart script
claire134524 October 2022
Maybe my rating is biased because I am French, and the chateaux de la Loire are special to French people, such as Chambord, Ambroise, Chenonceau, and Blois.... I used to drive there on some Weekends in the springs and falls. These castles are the jewels of French History and are still there with their glory. When I started to watch the series, I was skeptical because of some recently streamed miserable "historical" series. Although The Serpent Queen doesn't follow all historical facts thoroughly, it is still faithful to the essence of renaissance history in France at the time. The leading actress is fantastic with her facial expression and eyes. Constable Montmorency is also a unique character because I once visited his wonderful Chantilly castle in North Paris. Seeing his character alive made me feel nostalgia for my college life in Paris.....

This is fun.. can't go too wrong with Sam Morton
HorrorFilmHellion28 September 2022
I think the reason this works for me is because it's Cat De Medici telling her story in a satirical way. It's tongue in cheek, but moments of gritty drama. It reminds me of a cross between Harlots and Another Period, in a way. Young Cat breaking the 4th wall at times works since it is older Cat telling the story about younger Cat. The heavy metal track opener sets the tone on what to expect here. Samantha Morton is a powerhouse, and like Eva Green, plays villainous or sketchy roles with believable precision. She executes (and carries) this pretty well- Ruthless but thoughtful, conniving but kind, ultimately a political survivor. It's not going to be for everyone, but I'm enjoying this.

So Twisted
april_227026 November 2022
I didn't go into this for a history lesson, that is a different show. What I wanted was to be entertained and I was.

Great story! I like the way the strory is presented as 2 timelimes. It's a game of wits and who you partner with to gain the most.

Samantha Morton is amazing! The acting is great. The costuming is incredible. The characters are complex.

Just when you think you know where the storyline is going think again.

This is what happens when strong women keep their class on the outside but backstab and play a complex game to get what the want be it men, the crown, beauty and family lineage.

Quite Engaging
nrwmnkpsb28 October 2022
I've waited until episode 7 to write my review. I was a bit hesitant to form opinions as I did take issue with some of the creative aspects of the series but yet, I kept coming back. I wanted to see what happened next and how certain events would be handled. I've found I even look forward to it. I wasn't sure of Samantha Norton's portrayal of Catherine De Medici in the beginning. I felt her portrayal was a tad bland for such a colorful historic figure. But it didn't take long to see the power in the reserved manner in which she's approached it, something I've come to very much appreciate. The costuming and set design are very well done and the cast delivers their roles convincingly.

This show has exceeded my expectations with a fresh approach to a somewhat tapped genre. And it's done so without cartooning the subject matter, something difficult it seems, when other similar approaches have failed.

I recommend giving it a shot, but give it a few episodes to get in tune with what the show is trying to offer. It's unique in its approach.

Love it!
jgro-8463826 September 2022
All these people getting their knickers twisted because it's not this, it's not that, etc. I swear, so many people are so uptight anymore if something's not their idea of perfect. News flash, if you want an accurate portrayal of history, go read a history book or watch a documentary.

That out of the way, I love period pieces like this. Even if it's not accurate, it's still fun to watch. It's witty, funny, brutal at times, but with a great cast, great sets, and great acting. 3rd episode in and I can't wait for more!

People need to just lower their expectations and enjoy it for what it is. Nothing on TV is perfect, there's always going to be flaws or changes to adapt a story to television. Lighten up people!

Historical Fiction
theiceman-4898012 September 2022
I really loved the White Princess and the White Queen from Starz but didn't care much for the Spanish Princess. Unfortunately, the Serpent Queen is more like the latter then the former 2. I found myself checking to see how much time was left in the episode a couple times out of boredom and my mind started wondering off about other things. I'm disappointed too because I was really looking forward to this show and I love that part of history in Italy. This was kinda bizarre and more of a historical fiction which is tolerable for me if the writing and acting make up for it. It unfortunately didn't make up for it at all. I don't wanna discourage anyone from watching this as someone else might enjoy it and everyone has their different tastes but it just wasn't for me personally.

Why is the word "Woke" even being thrown around?
josephyoung7615 September 2022
I fail to see how this is anything but entertainment. It's a bunch of Brits playing Frenchies and Italians in a classic stage setting with a monstrous cast of talent.

I hate everything. It is so rare that I make it past one episode of anthing made after The Sopranos. I watch as much media as I possibly can so that I can be the first to catch the next big thing so that my pop culture brain can feed, and this show my friends, was good.

I watched it from beginnig to end and I am super excited to see more. It's refreshingly fun and I love how it winks at you at just the right time with a little coy smile that says, "you like when people do bad things? We're just getting started."

Starz has a hit. Don't let you being an a-hole stop you from enjoying it.

Brilliantly done
jaimemedina-3628815 December 2022
There are few moments in history as rich in potential for story telling as 16th century Europe. And fewer still lineages as fabled as that of the Medici's. The Serpent Queen makes full use of the vast accoutrements offered up by this period and delivers an engaging historical drama.

Wit, a spectacular cast, clever dialogue, novel direction, and beautiful cinematography are just a small sample of this wonder series.

Though there's nothing new about period dramas, there is little to no rehashing here of the same. Every scene seems inventive in its delivery. Leading the effort is the brilliantly executed character of Catherine. No small role, both Liv Hill and Samantha Morton are equal to the task. Hill in particular is outstanding.

In a time where every series seems filled to the brim with magic or flying reptiles it is refreshing to watch something that takes a real story and hits it out of the park.

Excellent!! Bravo!!

Best historical drama this year. Started w/Starz recently for 3 month deal. Came across Serpent Queen & I was totally transfixed & binged it in 2 days. Samantha Morton was excellent & her co-star held her own. The entire production was top notch from the acting, writing, costumes. Much thought & imagination went into this show. Words cannot begin to describe how much I enjoyed this show. Looking forward to watching next season's episodes. Hope this show goes on for years & years. Wish more streamers had such quality shows like this one. Hope Starz produces more good dramas like Serpent Queen. Bravo!!

Fun and entertaining
cawingcrow25 October 2022
I look forward to each episode of this show. I can't say that for many shows. It is entertaining and fun. It can also be brutal (as another reviewer mentioned).

I don't think it would be nearly as good without Samantha Morton playing the lead. She is very good at what she does.

I don't look for shows like these to be true to history (who knows really what went on that long ago). I look for them to be entertaining without being too gruesome.

This is a show I would love to be able to binge rather than have to wait and remember where we are each week. I would recommend to someone who likes period type shows without them having to being spot on.

Wicked, cunning, chess game..
boggie47581 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I thought I would watch the whole season before I wrote a review. This was a well written and acted story. I know it is complete fiction that only swirls around real people in history. It shows how evil and wicked and sad a woman will go to just to be as Catherine states for freedom. Catherine is playing three level chess and all around her are just pawns. Right now she is winning but she has made enemies all around her so she is walking on egg shells. I loved this first season and will want to see a second season. Naming this the serpent queen is a good title. She can strike like a poisonous snake if you step the wrong way. Well worth the watch on this one.

Incredible, brilliant and uniquely written!
awagstaff-5923020 September 2022
When i first saw the trailer i wasn't sure i would like this. It looked very different from the typical historical fiction series but i am hooked! It's brilliant in so many ways. I've watched the first two episodes several times and each time i am more impressed. Both the adult and younger version of Catherine de 'Medici are perfectly cast. Even my husband who typically isn't a fan of these types of shows, was watching and interested. Casting is perfect, the pace of the show is perfect and i know it's only going to get better from here if the first 2 episodes are this good. I'm so glad we finally get a real series about Catherine de 'Medici.

I was disappointed
finniegirl18 September 2022
First off, Samantha Morton and Liv Hill do a good job in their portrayal of Catherine; beyond that I wasn't impressed. For the most part, the storyline and dialogue seemed clunky and disjointed. One minor peeve of mine is a musical score that is far too modern for the time period. Not sure why film makers think this is a good idea; it seems out-of-place and takes away from the overall feel of a story. But that's just me.

Catherine De Medici was such a dynamic woman. It's a shame that this series won't do her life story justice. I made it through two episodes but don't think I'll take any more time to view anything further.

If you don't like satire don't bother
ikanboy12 September 2022
Way too much talking to the camera and narration for me. If the Medicis and the French Royalty were this much fun there wouldn't have been a revolution.

I lasted one episode. It's now the "in" thing to satirize history. It's not my thing. People will like the costumes and the scenery and the acting is good, and why do we have to have a modern tune as a backdrop?

Royals are in the news right now, after the death of QE2, and while I'm not a royalty fan (they have their role to play) I'd rather history educated us with appropriate entertainment when relevant.

I hope "Becoming Elizabeth" is better.

Watched it all nonstop
bdgbgczzs28 February 2023
I didn't have faith in mini series' being completely binge-able but I watched the whole thing in 2 days. I'm a sucker for period CNN pieces. The costumes and locations, I've got an affinity for. Historical fiction tends to be more entertaining than straight up history as long as you realize that it's mostly embellished for entertainment purposes. I hadn't seen Samantha Morton in a long time and was great as Medici. Due to being so entertained I've moved on to other originals from this channel that have also been engaging enough to binge watch. I haven't like or watched tv in 5 years but Freevee is better than Netflix right now.

Unique and Boldly Entertaining
galaxywarp-057184 January 2023
Sure this is not entirely historically accurate. There are some parts to the series which are tainted with modernism such as the constant use of the the f bomb which did not exist in the era in the way it is used today as a cuss word. It bothered me a little bit because the writers could be less lazy and actually research the cuss words used at the time. Now, the story itself is truly remarkable. You have a girl who is nothing until one day she is something and yet despite being something she is still stepped on. Nobody sees her value and treats her well. Not even her boyish, spineless husband, Henri. Yet the actors and actresses in this series bring the tale of Catherine De Medici alive. She was a true sneaky woman who could get away with so much, she was a villain, but a villain with cause. Always defending herself and brilliantly learning from her mistakes. The evolution of her character from an innocent and naiive girl, to an ambitious and mighty Queen is a unique take on her story. I truly recommend it for those who like period dramas and a fresh take on an iconic figure in history. With its witty humor and cleverness this show does not disappoint.

Trust No One
nogodnomasters4 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is a dramatization of the life (some of it, they left enough for a sequel) of Catherine De Medici (Samantha Morton) who would eventually rule France through various circumstances. It starts out when she is 14 when her uncle, Pope Clement (Charles Dance) marries her off to Prince Henry (Lee Ingleby) second in line to the throne of France. She takes with her an entourage of characters that she can trust and use as she enters into a royal messy soap opera. As it turns out Henry enjoys the favors of Diane de Poitiers (Ludivine Sagnier ) the cousin of the plain Catherine. Catherine's intellect becomes known and she has become trusted to some and treacherous to others. The rumors of her involvement in the black arts plays into the film. There are some minor historical facts that are out of place in this intriguing historical fiction. Each episode ends with a modern tune, which for the most part were cover songs. Worth the binge watch. Unlike other films, you have no sympathy for Mary Queen of Scots. (Antonia Clarke) Uses modern English with some slang.

Guide: F-word, sex, nudity (Ludivine Sagnier, Kiruna Stamell + brief extras)

Delectably Witty - Season 1 Review
JoshuaMercott1 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
First Impressions:

Some comedy, a lot of thrills, and an exceptionally clever approach to directing and writing resulted in a story about Catherine de Medici that I thoroughly enjoyed. Suffice to say, you won't find this in the history books, but many a moment was most assuredly based on what once happened.

Story Analysis:

What took me most by surprise was the modern comedy angle. It was perfectly balanced with the darker more dramatic plot threads, resulting in a series that felt fresh yet familiar.

Samantha Morton's performance as Catherine de Medici was spectacular. Much the same could be said of the artiste who played her younger version, namely Liv Hill. While the exact nature and behavior of their historical counterpart can't be verified to a fault, Samantha and Liv's acting more than breathed life into Catherine's tested humanity and apparent ruthlessness.

A rich array of characters, most of them based on actual historical figures, enriched the plot. The show captured the 16th century in a crisp and entertaining light. It was fun and games on one side, chaos and turmoil on the other.

Catherine's urgency to get pregnant and hold fast to her title and her life, especially in light of her uncle the Pope's murder/death, and with her distant cousin thwarting her every move in the French royal court, all made for exceptional entertainment.

Hair-makeup and costume design were outstanding. Sound effects and VFX were quite good. Soundtracks were noteworthy. Musical scoring was superb. Production design, art direction, and set decoration were great. Stunts and editing were clever. Writing was amazing. Direction was exemplary.

Final Notes:

Meticulous performances and savvy writing made each episode in season 1 of "The Serpent Queen" better than the last. Catherine's rise from a lowly commoner to queen-regent of France was well-dramatized and more cleverly written than I expected.

The entire season boasted a flair for entertainment more than historical truth, to be sure. But it was less about exercising total power and more about wielding timely wit. That, more than anything else, made "The Serpent Queen" season 1 feel credible and compelling.

Magnificent Performances

Warning: Spoilers
#theserpentqueen on @STARZ is nail biting, intense and so intriguing. The unique filming techniques and breaking of the 4th wall is so dynamically integrated! I love that much of it is historically accurate! So fascinating! Not to mention superb performances! Acting and wardrobe is great. Casting was great. The actors look quite like the true historical figures. Diane d' Potiet was real and that's crazy. I thought she was made up to be a spicy character nope she was screwing that 14 yo since before poor Catherine was in the picture. I love the moments when the camera will zoom in slightly for dramatic effect.
