A Jewel In S10's Crown
JoshuaMercott19 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"American Horror Story" S10E05 "Gaslight" on Disney+ Hotstar is the next 'Double Feature' pair to grace this season. This exquisitely crafted episode practically threw open the doors to all sorts of theories and possibilities concerning where the characters were going, and what was going to happen to (and with) them.

Doris Gardner (played by Lily Rabe) has given birth to her second child. Her performance was splendid - has to be seen to be appreciated, really. Circumstances take a turn for the strange when she is convinced by her own daughter into becoming 'one of them' by swallowing one of the black 'Muse Pills'.

The hospital delivery-room sequence was extremely discomfiting - this horror fan approves - especially when Harry Gardner (played by Finn Wittrock) stole away the bloody linens of childbirth and squeezed the blood out of them to consume (!). In other scenes, he gave a surprisingly human performance that was worth watching, because he also simultaneously conveyed a sense of 'hidden agenda'.

John J. Gray left no directing-stone unturned when it came to taking this episode, and by extension the series, to the next level. Writers Ryan Murphy (show creator), Brad Falchuk (show creator), and Manny Coto penned a brilliant winner with "Gaslight" episode five of "American Horror Story". Mac Quayle's musical scoring was 'scary movie' sublime.

Alma Gardner (played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong) turned extra-creepy in this epi. Every scene with her was unnerving and great. She managed to scare with nothing but crisply delivered dialogues and unflinching blood-related sequences. She gave off definite and dark 'Omen Damien' vibes.

The story centred on the Gardners in this episode, but the scenes in which Belle Noir (played by Frances Conroy) and Tuberculosis Karen (played by Sarah Paulson) appeared were captivating. Honourable mentions: Ursula (played by Leslie Grossman), Mickey (played by Macaulay Culkin), and Holden Vaughn (played by Denis O'Hare). They balanced out episode five "Gaslight".

This epi was outstanding - the best in season ten so far. They even ended it on a juicy cliffhanger, with Alma and Ursula going to see The Chemist. Nice throwback-nod there to spotting a 'turned' (and not in a good way) Doris munching on a hare in the cemetery.

Alma makes Damien look like a model child lol
Yvie8118 September 2021
Wow just when the story is starting to grow on me part 1 of this series already ends next week! 😕 Ryan Kiera Armstrong is the masterpiece this season, the way she plays evil Alma makes Damien of The Omen look like a model child! 🤣 I hope she'll also be in part 2 this season!

Lily Rabe's Masterpiece
corinneppierson16 September 2021
I normally write a paragraph on each stunning actor but if I had to judge this episode- I would write one for every single person. But the forever shining star was Lily Rabe and her performance deserves every award possible.

Rabe is a genius. The raw emotion Doris portrayed throughout this season is INCOMPARABLE to any character before. Never have I had more words to say about an actor in this series. Lily Rabe is and will forever be a star in American Horror Story.

Equal parts dark and heartbreaking, this is what ahs should be! This will definitely stand out as one of the show's best episodes.

Wow.
Drank2216 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode, for me, really stands out. Definitely the best of the season and probably one of best of the series.

The tone, acting, music, cinematography, and directing were just outstanding.

John Gray has always been one of my favourite AHS directors and he did an outstanding job. Still cant get over how beautifully it was shot and the transitions from scene to scene. Even the music just mad this whole episode just so much better. Honestly I cant get over it.

Overall, a very sad and morbid episode, but full of emotion. Despite only knowing the characters for a few episodes, you really do feel a connection to them. Especially TB Karen and Doris. Lily Rabe really shines once again with a tragic take on Doris, but honestly every actor was on their A game this episode. Sarah Paulson probably had less than 30 minutes of screen time this whole season, but man did she ever make me feel bad for TB Karen!

This whole episode was a total 180 from last weeks episode, but definitely in the right direction! Totally stressful and thrilling, heart was pounding several times. I actually jumped at one point, something that's only ever happened once before with AHS!

Some may say that it was predictable with what happened to Doris, but I honestly don't see why that would be classified as a bad thing. They foreshadowed it from the beginning and to me, that's just good story telling as it makes sense. If you're wanting a 'twist' or the 'unpredictable' you might end up with something along the lines of S8 of Game of thrones-- where the twist makes no sense whatsoever and betrays what the story has been leading towards.

It's gonna be exciting to see how this part of the season wraps up next week. The shorter episode count so far is working in AHS's favour as this story has been so consistent it's almost shocking.

Anyways, this episode definitely reminded me of why I first feel in love with AHS. I so prefer this type of tone over the campier seasons we've had in recent years.

I do hope this season gets some award recognition in some form as we need to see more seasons like this in future.

This episode was such a masterpiece, honestly hard to put into words.

I just hope they can stick the landing!

One of the most infuriating AHS episodes
gedikreverdi18 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the most infuriating and disturbing American Horror Story episodes. I am so mad at Harry, Alma and Ursula for getting rid of Doris like this. After refusing stealing Doris's baby for Belle, she had to take the pill to not get killed by the ones in the streets. Then she killed Mickey on the beach and killed herself at the ocean.

I'm looking forward to seeing what's going to happen next. I'm so glad this beautiful TV show has been back to its glorious days. This season has been almost as good as Asylum so far.

Acting + Writing -
blue_dragyn8 October 2021
First of all, this episode was so predictable. But that's not what bothered me because the acting was amazing as others have said. Lily Rabe is one of the best actors out there. And the youngster playing her daughter is chillingly good. Sometimes the writing for this series is trash and nobody talks the way some of these characters talk. But the writers really annoyed me and lost my trust during this episode. So a woman who has just delivered a baby (with no complications) is released from the hospital, with an IV in, and has no recollection of being discharged? Yeah, I can believe vampires are out there more than I can believe this would happen. Then, we get a scene where Doris comes downstairs, the baby starts crying, and she begins to lactate, and Ursula says, "Sound of the crying makes you do that." Why bother with this line from a character who has never had and nursed a baby to a character who already has had and, presumably, nursed a baby? Just completely unbelievable writing that takes away from the story.

Might be my favorite AHS episode
landerdevos16 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Wow...they went all out. The fate of Doris was heart-wrenching. Lily Rabe acted her soul out. There has not been one moment that I did not want to punch Alma in the face, and Karen...my dear Karen. I loved this episode. This is an absolute high for AHS. Its...a masterpiece.

Only tagging along for side characters
wotcherscamp29 April 2022
As soon as Alma turned into a spoiled brat begging for food nonstop and preaching about how great she is, the family lost its charm. Everyone else is far more interesting than the Gardner family. I think Mickey and Karen would have made for better main characters than the Gardners. Boring and disappointing.

Painful to Watch
katildavsan16 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
God this episode was so hard to watch, it is was so brutal and heartbreaking what her family did to Doris and the sad truth is probably everyone had met at least a Harry or Ursula once in a lifetime. I remember some of the stars described this season as a psychological thriller and they were right, I can't get Doris and of course the first pale person from the previous episode out of my head...

I had to resist the urge to turn it off
kevinandrewsphoto16 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This was the most upsetting episode of the series IMO. To see what was done to Doris and her child nearly broke me. I'm a husband and a father to a toddler and I felt overwhelming empathy for Doris. Her husband stripped away, her daughter wanting her dead, fearing her own family would eat her new baby and to top it all off, her own dreams crushed as she's proven to be untalented. Forced into a monster by her own daughter. This episode will haunt me for a long time. Lilly Rabes acting is what made everything work.

Changed my mind
loganarnold16 September 2021
I am a huge AHS fan and while I've completely enjoyed this season so far, nothing blew me away like Roanoke, Asylum, or 1984. I had no complaints (maybe other than me being upset that the pale people are seemingly not sea creatures like the trailers alluded to, but that could easily change next episode) But oh my god this episode was amazing !! Lily Rabe's performance was phenomenal, as well as Sarah's ! I cannot wait for the part 1 finale next week.

Maybe it's just me..
chr_the_best19 September 2021
I find this season (so far) to be only ok-ish.. It doesn't feel like genuine AHS to me, though it's better than the awful 1984 season.

I really don't get the fantastic reviews, as I am a bit disappointed. I will watch the rest, however.

Surprinsingly good
ElvisSavir17 September 2021
I have to admit I wasnt expecting much about this season, honestly, the most insteresting season was Asylum, and of course Murder House but this season has offered a nice story, a good plot, and brilliant performances.

Lilly Rabe here is simply amazing, she is the star this season, she developed an amazing Doris, and i feel like amazed by her.

They gave us a bunch of villans, and we dont even know who is worse, i have never hated so much a character on AHS since Dandy in Freakshow, but Alma is the devil herself.

I am very pleased with this 5 episodes, and cannot wait for the part i finale.

Doris and Karen, both in this episode made ne cry. Oh, Mickey was really good too.

Maybe the aliens will find a way to resurrect Karen or Doris in part II.
