The notion of a future antiquity, a future so distant that even our age will be considered the most ancient history, expresses an inverted optimism that posits both our own demise (as a positive force), and continuity in our aftermath (as inevitable). Opening Suitcases is a tragi-poetic rumination on a television game show. On the surface, this popular television show appears to be a simplistic game of chance. In fact, it is a vehicle through which American popular culture gives vent to our fear of failure, humiliation and death relating to the war in Iraq.
