Passion, Politics, and Perseverance!
grisgrisfilms28 April 2023
I really loved My Yang Gang Diary. It was engaging following Ching Juhl's personal emergence into the grass roots political campaign of Andrew Yang. It is more than a personal journey story of the filmmaker Ching. Juhl. Her own curiosity is contagious and her sensitivity to her comrades on the campaign, through her continuous smooth shooting style allows the viewer to not only get too know the activists but as well become part of the team.

Even if you were not a Yang supporter you will feel the passion, excitement and perseverance of the volunteers working alongside the filmmaker in her entertaining and educational documentary of the political process of an American presidential primary journey. My Yang Gang Diary should also be a useful tool for high school civics classes.

Strongly Recommend this Doc!

I enjoyed watching the documentary My Yang Gang Diary. Not knowing how canvassing goes in political campaigns, I found this documentary very educational. The passion of the people who supported Andrew Yang and their volunteering activities was impressive. Yang's campaign slogan "Not Left, Not Right, but Forward" is so right on. I found it fascinating that the filmmaker Ching Juhl quit her college teaching job, and became a Yang Gang member.

The interviews from supporters of Andrew Yang were interesting and they were well presented. I was surprised to learn that the whole documentary was shot on an iPhone. It looks great and I strongly recommend it!

Colorful Campaigns BTS!

I paid to watch this documentary a few months back and wasn't disappointed. Although I knew that Yang never had a chance of becoming President nor Mayor of New York, I was curious about why people supported him. This documentary offers a very thoughtful perspective on the people who made his campaign possible.

It's very well shot and tells a very beautiful and compelling story from the perspective of the filmmaker, Ching Juhl. Her journey and personal growth as both an immigrant and campaigner parallel the campaign movements as she travels the country persevering through racism and other difficulties.

The camaraderie and genuine respect of the other campaigners is authentic and reveals deeply personal layers about their individual personalities and reasons for joining the campaign. They somewhat reminded me of the motley crue from Godspell!

Aside from the colorful volunteers, the technical details are nearly flawless. This is not an amateurish attempt at guerilla filmmaking. The scenes are balanced following a logical sequence, the sound quality is excellent and the visual details maintain an engaging clarity throughout.

If you enjoy a lively behind the scenes look at political campaigns, this is it!

Interesting documentary
smithelga2 July 2023
What I liked about the movie is that is not so much about the content of the political ideas, but mostly gives a very good impression on how 'normal people' help to promote their favorite party. I think that insight is what makes this documentary really unique. For me, as a non US citizen it is a rare chance to see this and have the feeling I am living along with this group of people. The documentary also provides some new glimpses on lesser known (from movies) areas. I was so suprised that everything is so straight in America that it looks like all the streets have been designed with a ruler. Never thought about how many curves and circles my own city has, as I am kind of used to that. There was one scene that I rewatched as to my surprise even the American snow and clowds seemed to have a sharp edge. That was probably a coincidence, but I loved how that came into the movie. Mostly I see that this is a unique document about individuals that seem to share one big connection. Probably sociologists or antropologist will love to watch this. Looking forward to your interview with mister Yang. Great job Ching!

A wonderful documentary!!!

My Yang Gang Diary is an excellent documentary showing the devotion and enthusiasm of the Yang Gangs for the presidential campaign of Andrew Yang. I have learned a lot on the process of canvassing and how much work the campaign requires!

The editing is painstakingly done to tell a story seamlessly throughout the film. I love the music soundtracks which range from classical music, jazz, pop, R&B to world music.

What is amazing and surprising is that Ching captured the yearlong campaign with an iPhone! This documentary demonstrates that storytelling is more important than how fancy one's equipment is. The images are sharp and the audio is excellent.

My Yang Gang Diary is a personal and grassroots movement story which not only inspired me but extremely educational. Thank you, Ching, for sharing your story!!

A Must See Documentary!

I have seen My Yang Gang Diary, feature documentary, twice. Why, my cousin Ching Juhl is the director.

I am amazed that she was able to pull the whole film together, from writing, directing, shooting, editing to producing. Congratulations!

That fact that the doc was shot on me an iPhone 11 was pretty awesome. I learned how the US primary presidential campaign is. The behind-the-scene canvassing was fascinating to watch. The storytelling of the documentary is real, personal, and touching.

I am so proud of my cousin who was fearless and tirelessly capturing the Yang Gang movement. If we all get involve and do more volunteer works, the world will be a better place.

Watch the doc!

Your passions become ours as well.

Ching's documentary, following Andrew Yang's Presidential campaign, is a pleasure to watch. There is just something very engaging about how the camera moves through everything as if you are experiencing everything directly through the filmmaker. It's incredible to me when I think of her journey as a woman in China to being here in America following a Presidential candidate! Wow. I find so much value in Ching's work. Your passions become ours as well. Keep doing what you are doing!!! Thank you for the work you do. I am looking forward to watching some of your others works and am, very much, looking forward to what you do next!

Grassroots passion for politics
photo-859-40163129 January 2024
This documentary covers the personal experience of a volunteer with Andrew Yang's attempt to become the Democratic Party nominee in the 2020 U. S. presidential election. The movie works best showing the passion and commitment of persons who want to make a change in U. S. society through their support of Andrew Yang and his central message of universal basic income for U. S, citizens. The movie shows the energy and wide-eyed commitment of those willing to work long days knocking on doors in neighborhoods and striking up conversations with strangers to get Yang's message out to the voters. The narrator's own personal journey to the United States and getting inspiration from Yang to get involved in the political process is covered well. The pacing is sharp and you get to feel for these idealistic volunteers even though they know their candidate doesn't really stand a chance against the existing power structure in the American governing system. The film could have been stronger addressing this issue and explaining the criticisms of universal basic income. But like the title says, this is a video diary of the narrator's personal experience of being on the campaign trail in 2020 and is a fascinating look into what drives politics at the grassroots level.
