Transcendence.

Recently seeing (and reviewing) a excellent quartet of Korean films from the 2021 Glasgow Film Festival, I was intrigued to find that Cine-Excess were screening/streaming a recent Korean title that I could only find a few details about from some other reviews, leading to me transcending to a viewing.

Note:Review contains plot details.

View on the film:

Detailing in an interview after the screening/stream that books on real science and philosophy (a subject that the film maker has a diploma in) were the main inspiration, rather then Sci-Fi flicks, writer/director Naeri Do impressively transcends the pulpy set-up of Minyoung getting revenge on the school bullies.

Following Minyoung being mercilessly bullied, Do takes a inventive Hard Sci-Fi approach to the post-human transformation of Minyoung, with Do laying out with precision the mechanics of the electrical baptism that will put Minyoung into a killer time-loop.

Describing in the interview the tight budget run to get the CGI on screen, director Do displays a striking ambition in taking the Horror movie High School setting into Sci-Fi with brightly coloured machinery and metallic addictions taking Minyoung into a post-human world, but one which is hurt by the tightness of the cost, with the inconsistent CGI becoming distracting to Do's script following Minyoung's trans to Post-Human.
