Foyle's War?
Sleepin_Dragon12 December 2022
Tom Brannick is back on the case, he and DS McGovern are investigating the murky death of an accountant, who's believed to have had links to the underworld.

I was quite surprised to see that Brannick had managed to escape justice, and as it stands, he's got away with murder.

It seemed a little odd to bring this show back, not that series one was bad at all, it just felt as though it had reached a natural conclusion, but back it came, and looking ahead, there's a third series in the works as well.

It's been so long since I saw series one, that I'd forgotten chunks of it, a longer reminder would have been a help.

Not bad, gritty and moody, decent, but not hugely absorbing, I'm sure it will open up, and pick up the pace as it develops. It felt like we were missing way too many pieces of the puzzle to even start putting things together.

Nesbitt continued to do mean and moody very effectively, I thought the episode was boosted by the excellent Victoria Smurfit.

A solid start, but not one to get you desperate for episode 2.

6/10.

haven't seen this season yet

I have seen only season one, as I live in the US. I thought it was extraordinary. It gave a lot of insight to this period of history in Northern Ireland around the time of the Peace Accord. This period of history always fascinated me. As a crime procedural junkie I was enthralled by the big surprises. I like neat endings. I think episode four sewed up some things but left a lot of other things opened about the past and in the present. At first I didn't believe Tom's story about what happened. Call me skeptical. I hope hope hope that this show doesn't suffer the same fate as a lot of various shows. They do so well in the initial season then suffer from the Sophmore Slump then get cancelled before you get closure. It looks as if there will be a Season three. I want to know the truth about what happened to Tom's wife and I don't believe that has fully been disclosed. Yet. Off topic, it's interesting to watch Bloody Sunday then this series back to back.

Episode 1

I am unsure whether Bloodlands needed to return. It ended with DCI Tom Brannick (James Nesbitt) being revealed as Goliath and getting away with murders.

The second series opens with a flashback from 1998. Brannick carried out a hit on gun runners and found some bars of gold on a shipment of arms.

In the present day Brannick is investigating the death of an accountant with underworld links. He also meant to looked after the gold. The accountants wife Olivia Foyle (Victoria Smurfit) seems to be more involved than she lets on.

The opening episode was cold and moody. It was a tribute to those scandi crime dramas. Only DCS Jackie Twomey (Lorcan Cranitch) came across as a real person.

Still it was decent enough. It made me think if Brannick will get away with it again by the end of the series so he can do more mournful stares.
