The term shepardising comes from the use by law students of Shepard's Citations, a work used in United States legal research which offers a list of every authority citing particular cases statutes, or legal authorities. This originated in 1873 with the efforts of one Frank Shepard (1848-1900). To begin with, this was called Shepard's Adhesive Annotations. These citations had been printed on adhesive, perforated sheets, that were divided and stuck onto pages of case law. These later took the form of bound books with the name stamped upon their spines.
