Okay, maybe I'm in a forgiving mood since I just watched "Painkiller" before this episode, but it wasn't that bad. I mean, this season's been hit-or-miss so far, and this episode is far from what we know Eric Wallace to be capable of, with such standout episodes as "The Last Temptation of Barry Allen: Part 1" and "The Exorcism of Nash Wells" in his repertoire, but at least it's not as bad as when he took that vacation ahead of "Mother".
They very much, I think unintentionally, made Chillblaine into a sort of icy Reverse Flash, and I liked it. He's a villain that was jealous of Killer Frost's ice powers, so he worked up some tech to give himself the powers, and then tried to kill Killer Frost at the end to prove he was superior. Obviously, saying he's literally Reverse Flash with ice powers is a bit of a stretch, since Thawne is a bit more nuanced than that, but the evil scheme is basically the same. I enjoyed it. Also that shot of Frost and Chillblaine shooting ice at each other in the bar looked awesome! Well done. The main problem I have with this guy is that he hasn't had any setup! Imagine if he showed up in the middle of "Central City Strong" or "Fear Me", and then we got this episode three episodes down the line. That could've been a good twist, but instead they packed it all into one episode. That's some wasted potential right there.
Kristen Kramer's witch hunt continues this week, and though you may think she's being ridiculous, I'd argue that it's just because the story isn't being told from her perspective. Frost has all these allegations against her, and Kramer is just trying to bring her to justice. She may have a case of confirmation bias, like when she tried to pin that murder at Ivo Labs on Frost when evidence showed otherwise, but Barry was on the very same witch hunt in "Therefore I Am" back in season four, and everyone loved it! Why is it different now? It's still a character being overly stupid to the point of lunacy and having a serious case of confirmation bias. Just let that sit for a minute. From Kramer's perspective, everything makes sense. Is there currently any other ice metahumans or people active in the city? No. Must mean that Frost did it. She's been on the side of the CCPD in recent times, sure, but everyone is capable of backsliding.
The stuff with Barry and the Speed Force avatar is alright, I guess. Definitely the weakest part of the episode. Iris and Barry shared a good scene about it actually, and Grant Gustin and Michelle Harrison have some really good on screen chemistry. They're great, even if the Speed Force is being a little pushy at times. I didn't even mind Barry taking a backseat for this episode. Just don't make it a habit.
Also, I just wanna talk about Iris for a second. With the exception of "Mother" being written around Eric Wallace's poorly timed vacation, I've been able to tell that Iris has been getting a lot better writing and has been a lot more likeable since he became the showrunner. I don't think that's a coincidence. She's been getting a lot better scenes, and the writers have been using Candice Patton's acting talent really well in the last two seasons overall. I made a joke during my viewing of the episode about how Eric Wallace may have made it his mission to fix Iris West-Allen, and it's working so far. Sorry if this tangent feels out of place. I had to include it in a review at some point, and this seemed to be the one.
As one final point on this episode, I like how nobody on this show takes anything personally. For example, Joe has to arrest Caitlin during the episode, and Caitlin understands that Joe was just doing his job. Also, Allegra lies to the team about where Frost is, and Barry still takes her out in the field with him. If this were Supergirl or Batwoman, or hell, even this very same show during their fourth season, those issues would've persisted over multiple episodes. I can't express how amazing it is that nobody takes anything personally anymore! It's so refreshing! Thank you for making this change!
This episode isn't perfect. I can understand people giving it a 1, but I can also see ratings of 7 or 8 showing up in there. It's flawed, but it worked in my opinion. Just wish Chillblaine had more setup than he got, because he had the workings of a really solid villain behind him. I'm rating lower this week not because I didn't like the episode, but because there was just a few things I would've done differently.
