2020: The Story of Us

2020: The Story of Us is a documentary by Oscar winner Kevin Macdonald.

It shows the impact of Covid on the people who contracted and the NHS staff who cared for them.

Macdonald was given exclusive access to the intensive care units in various parts of the country.

Dr Shondipond Laha in Preston was there when the first wave hit the NHS. He eventually caught the virus himself.

Some nurses were mentally affected as the hospital wards filled up with Covid patients and the death toll increased.

A high profile patient was children's author Michael Rosen who spent 47 days in intensive care at Whittington hospital. Even after he recovered he was not 100%. His eye and ear were still not right.

The documentary was a variance of news footage and other documentaries on the pandemic that has been broadcast over the last year.

Mobile phone footage of families who have been devastated as the virus has affected their loved ones. Hospital staff traumatised as they worked long hours and then having to deal with families who have lost their loved ones to the virus.

The narrative had a sombre and moving conclusion. Rosen met the consultant who had cared for him. Professor Hugh Montgomery lost his 17 year old son in a snorkelling incident when the lockdown eased.

Rosen could understand Montgomery's grief as he had lost his son to Meningitis some years earlier. It gave the documentary a cruel twist as both men comforted each other.
