Amateur level acting, especially the female lead
trulahn23 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Besides the actors for the two priests, all of the remaining cast members have next to zero acting credits prior to this movie and it really shows. Rumor had it that the female lead was only casted because the director was her boyfriend at the time. She had ONE credit before this movie, a role in a TV movie. And her lack of experience totally shows in her performance. Every line she delivered sounded like a low budget TV show. Knowing that her only previous work was a TV movie, that kind of made sense. But it also means she sounded totally out of place with the rest of the cast. They should have dubbed over her natural voice acting so that the audience didn't have to hear her speak.

Besides the acting problem, the story line was too forced as well. The main female character repeatedly insisted to talk to the spirit of her deceased husband without any explanation for most of the movie, despite of several near death encounters with hostile ghosts in the haunted hospital. But what does she do? Continue to risk EVERYONE'S lives just to talk to her husband. She would even risk her own life just to talk to him. And we finally find out why near the end of the movie what was so important, she wanted to tell her deceased husband that she is pregnant with their child! WTF!!!??? She doesn't even bat an eye at the thought that if she dies, their child, the ONLY thing her husband would have left for them, will also die. Nope. Not a single mention. No worry about the life of their unborn baby. Then the timing is all wrong too. The hospital looked like it had been shut down for months, if not years. But she doesn't look pregnant AT ALL! She should be nearly done with her pregnancy if not already given birth by the look of decay of the hospital. But nope. Her stomach is as flat as a normal person so she can't be more than 3 months pregnant. There is just no way the closed down hospital could look that terrible in those short months.

The reason they wanted to make the hospital look like it had been closed down for years because at the movie is a frame story. At beginning and ending of the movie, we are actually at "present" time. A Vlogger is introducing this haunted hospital, and we find out at the very end that her cameraman was scared away by the ghosts of the Tao priests and their two patrons, meaning that the whole story we had been watching happened a while ago and, BIG TWIST, they had all died. But this created a discontinuity in how the hospital looks and the pregnancy status of the main female character.

Besides a few jump scares, this movie wasn't all that scary. Half the time it's too dark to see anything anyway. Much of the $1 million budget is on special effects. They really should have spent more on improving the script and hiring a real actress instead of the girlfriend of the director.

Random Things Happen the Movie
quachlinhytf9 April 2021
The only explanation you are given:"It is because it is". Everything happens because it happens. The movie is filled with inconsistencies, bad acting and illogic.

Although, some scenes are actually quite scary, don't know because I watched it at 3a.m with room door open or not.

A piece of advice, throw your brain out and just enjoy the atmosphere of the movie.

Very Disappointing!
facelesscry-7120514 April 2021
Poor acting + Inconsistent plot!

Wasted my 1.5 hour to watch this bad movie.

Was expecting a good story at the beginning, but turned out really bad.

Such a shame this kind of movie appears on NETFLIX in 2020 lol.

Total rubbish!
chrisleewema8 May 2021
I get it when someone want to produce some rubbish movie to make some money. I even tried to be open minded and put my brain into the fridge just to be on the level of this movie. Even then, i can't seems to be able to withstand the stupidity and laziness of the producer/ director/ actress. Let's put 1 example here, you were standing by the wall and then something creepy or scary grab you at where you are standing. And then you were just standing there afterwards? Not even a slightest hint of fear on your face?

Even if it doesn't cost a single cent to watch this film, i'll need to think about it because of the damage it will do to your brain and the time wasted. Not to mention the amount of blood you have to lost vomitting.

Not too bad if you enjoy hospital horrors!
natashialw3 May 2021
Any setting in a abandoned hospital always creeps me out so this movie caught my eye. The acting was good! Idk why people don't think it was, there was a lot of emotion in this movie, the setting creepy as hell and the story decent. Up until the very ending of the film I got lost on what the hell happened to the main characters. Would have had a higher rating just for that, this is worth a one time watch!

Slow paced, monotonous and uneventful...
paul_haakonsen9 December 2022
As I sat down to watch "Xing Lin Yi Yuan" (aka "Hospital"), I hadn't heard about it prior to watching it. But it being a Taiwanese horror movie was essentially all that was needed to make me have an interest in watching it.

However, writer and director Chia-Lin Chu didn't really impress with this 2022 horror movie. In fact, I was rather bored as the narrative progressed in a pace that would make a snail seem like a sprinter. A slow paced narrative and uneventful storyline hardly made for an overly enjoyable movie.

I wasn't familiar with the cast ensemble in the movie, but it was a shame that they had so little to work with in terms of a properly entertaining storyline and script.

Visually then the movie was adequate. I mean, you're not in for a grand spectacle that will revolutionize the horror genre in any way, but the special effects and CGI were actually good enough for what they turned out to be.

Something that did work out well enough in the movie was the atmosphere and the visual presentation of the hospital itself.

For a horror movie then this movie was a swing and a miss. And it is definitely not a movie that I would recommend for fans of the Asian horror cinema.

My rating of "Xing Lin Yi Yuan" lands on a generous three out of ten stars.

Ignore the low reviews
mattmombbackup9 May 2021
Honestly too many people these days expect every movie to win a golden globe and have the top of the line special effects (hence the negative/lame reviews) If you are a serious fan of all horror genres (from slasher to B movie to ghost and found footage) then you will enjoy this movie. Personally I liked this movie. Obviously it isn't going to win any awards and after all the reviews I expected it to be garbage like Hell House 2. However, I was pleasantly surprised and actually enjoyed it. Any movie set in an abandoned hospital or psych ward is already off to a good start and the premise is not bad. Ya certain things like the time line and some acting/effects are not perfect but what do you honestly expect from a low budget horror? If you can go into this movie with a love of horror, no expectations, and an open mind you might actually enjoy it.

Worst scary movie ever.
xwgzfbbcg11 June 2021
I'm not a big fan of scary movie but I still watch some.

And this one, I could sit very steadily through the whole movie.

The story line is chopped, and the movie effects are not well managed.

Horrendous! Could not even complete it
anikb-8709931 August 2021
There is this one lead girl who says to the other lead girl "Your sister (nurse) killed my husband bcz of poor treatment" and in reply, the other girl says "No! Your husband is a murderer! His ghost forced my sister (nurse) to commit suicide". LMAO!!!!!.... At this point i realized, the writers of this film definitely had smoked hash before scripting, i mean what the heck is this??

Next, it is not about the low budget. It is about how badly it is shot and executed! Just see how good "Gonijam" was. Low budget but well executed. But this film?...the main ghost (the one in the poster) is given a slow mo flashy entry like some villian of a commercial film xD. Then we get to witness some ghosts in a room that look like toys from a nearby shop!

Third, it could have been shot in a Found Footage style which would have helped to elevate this film's already low horror.

Last but not the least, it is boring and not at all scary! It does try its best to do so by putting in a baby ragdoll but it doesnt help at all all bcz of the poor vfx used. Films like Gonijam or the Hell House 1 had a tensed atmosphere leading up to jumpscares that helped those films but this film does not have any of those.

Boring, confusing, and plan-acted
gabriel_sanchez2 November 2023
Xing lin yi yuan (Hospital) draws attention for its genre, a classic of oriental horror, ghost stories and spirits in haunted locations. However, the confusing plot and bad acting don't save this feature film.

In Hospital, two women hire two exorcist monks to contact their loved ones who died in the hospital that common sense considers to be cursed. Anxious for answers, they push the rules and summon unwanted spirits, forcing them to fight to survive.

The acting of the characters in Hospital is bad. It lacks emotion and spontaneity, especially for the sake of the events that happen in the story - I'd particularly go crazy if I was attacked by evil spirits, but in Hospital, it seems like seeing spirits is commonplace.

Another problem is the film's confusing editing. One scene makes it apparent that a character has died, induced by the spirit, but then that character appears as if nothing happened.

The graphic effects look like Insta filters, but I can ignore that in low-budget movies.

Some rules feel silly, creating false tension. At one point, characters are cornered by a spirit, who obviously wants to play with his victims for unknown reasons. Just when it seems like all is lost, a character remembers a silly rule that saves them, a boring scene.

Hospital is not recommended for fans of the genre. With a demotivating pace and a confusing and misinterpreted story, I don't see the point of recommending that fans go through this torment.

A creepy, confusing, mess
jon_carlson-289532 January 2023
Asia has quickly taken over the top spot in the horror genre. I have seen many great works from Japan and South Korea and eager to expand my horizons, I set my sights on a Chinese film with the enticing title, "Hospital". So many possibilities came to mind of what could be in store, and while many of my hopes did come to pass on screen, what the final product ended up being was far less in substance.

We are introduced to the star of the film- the hospital itself- via press clippings from its infamous history. A creepy montage of red ink and some spooky atmosphere before a crew of ghost hunters shows up to give a more formal introduction to the now disused building before being scared off after spending 30 seconds inside. We are then shown the human leads, a Taoist priest and his son who offer ghost tours to paying customers who want to see their deceased loved ones. They are taken up on this offer by two women, a widower wanting to see her husband, and the sister of a dead nurse who used to work in the hospital before leaping out of a window.

The building, I can almost guarantee, is the genuine article. A magnificently creepy, rotting, abandoned medical facility complete with all the dressings of old wheelchairs, signage, and beds that one would associate with the setting. I was getting "Session 9" vibes to a point, but sadly it never progressed beyond that. Reason being the story is a little fuzzy. The Taoist father-son duo have conflict, Dad is dying of cancer and the son has never wanted to be in his line of work, and the customers don't like each other due to assigning blame to each other's camp of mourning. The widower blames the staff for her husband's death and the sister blames the patients for her sibling's suicide. I wish this had been played up more, but we're eventually introduced to the big baddy, a demon queen.

The demon queen is a malevolent spirit of a mother who lost her young son in the hospital and then in the midst of grief set herself ablaze in the morgue with her son's body. She now appears as an almost seven foot tall apparition of the girl from "The Ring" pushing a doll that resembles her son in a wheelchair. The visuals of this are unsettling, but hardly novel. I've seen so many like this demon queen, creeping about in black smoke, and a creepy child-like doll straight out of "The Boy".

A game of survival begins to play out as the 4 try to survive, the women refusing to leave because they are so insistent on seeing the spirits of their loved ones, and the father and son having to work to clean up the spiritual mess they've made all by spilling a vial of negative energy water. Thin premise, but I've seen worse. The movie flashes back to the events referenced, which seemed like a much better film premise, and then back again to treat us to some poor-CGI effects inserting in the very real hospital. The uncanny valley was bigger than all of China.

Still, the acting was decent by the whole cast. The grieving mother was quite believable in her human state, I wish she'd not been switched out for a "Fatal Frame" boss. And the husband of widow struck me as a great guy without much screen time, something not easy to pull off. By the end we've seen plenty of gruesome sights and had some jump scares, but never feel emotionally invested. It's all capped off by the stock twist ending that made little sense. And failure to build up to it may have added its unexpectedness, but only made it more of a failure.

This could've been a really good film, as all the ingredients are there, but we're left with something like the hospital itself. A building meant to do good but instead stands empty, suitable only for giving you a little bit of the willies. Exactly like this film. 4/10.

yunanan-6699312 December 2021
Bad director, bad actor, bad editing, bad story line, super low budget, I don't find anything good dan boring.

This is just beginner level if we compare to The Eye 1 or 2, The Shutter. Alone, etc.

Wanted more

Warning: Spoilers
HOSPITAL (2020) is a low budget Taiwanese supernatural horror film that's somehow made its way to Netflix. It turns out to be a generic supernatural 'haunted house' type feature with a creepy old abandoned hospital replacing the typical smaller buildings we see in these features. The place has a fearsome reputation, and relatives, fearing that their deceased loved ones are restlessly haunting the place, call in a team of Taoist priests in order to perform an exorcism. It all goes predictably wrong from there.

I knew little about this film before watching and there isn't really much to say afterwards, either. The oldest star in it is Tai-Bo, who once supported Jackie Chan and others as a frequent comedy actor in 1980s Hong Kong action cinema, but here he's much more serious. The scares involve the usual long-haired female ghosts that Asian horror is preoccupied with, along with creepy CGI demon visuals, possession, and the occasional gore scene. The visuals take precedence over the plot, which is merely perfunctory, and it all feels quite generic and digital like many cheap modern horror films. I was left wanting more.

A Superior Horror Movie
ladymidath26 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I have to admit to having a real love of Asian horror movies. Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Indonesia, these countries have produced the scariest movies like P, The Ring, The Grudge, The Red Shoes, Sisters, Dark Water, Pulse and so many more. Western horror seem to be all phycological horror and torture porn, where Asian horror tends towards actual supernatural horror. Hospital is one that features some terrifying ghosts. The story is a pretty simple one, two young women pay a couple of Taoist priests to take them into an abandoned hospital to speak to their loves ones. One young woman wants to speak to her husband and the other wants to see her sister again.

The effects are very good with some very effective scenes. There are a few jump scares that are really quite frightening and the mood and atmosphere are built up quite nicely.

This is one of the better horror movies out there.

Fast Food Horror That Hits The Spot
christaylor-100545 October 2022
Short and low budget. If you like Asian horror and the Silent Hill Franchise I recommend you to check this film out.

It's not perfect, but the concept Is decent. While the execution is dependant entirely upon your own expectation it is passable regardless.

There are some great creative ideas in here and some heart as well. It isn't going to be your favourite horror movie, it won't even touch your top twenty. But if what you're looking for is a ninety minute horror that doesn't take half an hour to start or wrap the ending up this is for you.

It isn't going to be the worst movie you have seen, nor the best, it's mediocrity, but mediocrity you can stomach.

Not a good one...
adaycito-0376115 January 2024
The effort at doing something different should be appreciated but the execution is not good. I just wanted to watch it because the hospital thing, even though I had read a lot of bad reviews and kind of expected the result, but did it anyway. Well, they were not wrong and I would not recommend this either, specially if you do not have too much time. It reminded me the The Grudge saga in some parts, specially during the flashback fragments, therefor it could have some room for improvement and I am looking forward to a remake that somehow fixes plot and technical shortages of this one. Move Hollywood, move!

Not winning any awards but will give you a laugh and kill some time.
dapanchaldev23 December 2022
First of all I'd say get a bit tipsy before watching this one. Is this movie winning any awards ? No. But it has a decent premise as two individuals wander into an abandoned hospital led by a Taoist exorcist in an attempt to reconnect with lost loved ones. Some scenes are so bad they are good and I got a good laugh out of it over all. Is it horrifying ? No. This is one of those ones you watch for the sake of watching of something (hence the drank). Fun way to kill some time on a plane, on a train ride or road trip. I JUST watched this during my hospital stay and it made it all the more better. I wasn't familiar with any of the actors but acting isn't horrible and CGI is so so, with some parts being a bit of a laugh.
