Not a particularly exciting summer

"Ein Sommer in Long Island" is another German romance comedy movie from 6 years ago. Most of these are not particularly worth watching and this one here is no exception. It's 90 minutes long and a television production. The central character is played by Petra Schmidt-Schaller ("Tatort", "Stereo", "Unknown") and (surprise, surprise!) she gets together with the male character in the end. He is played by Max von Thun, Friedrich's son. You may have seen him (or the other male protagonist) on "Hitler: The Rise of Evil", "Soul Kitchen" or "Oh Boy". The director is Sibylle Tafel, who has worked on many TV productions, including fairytale movies and gooey romance flicks. Jane Ainscough is the writer and you may have heard about her "Hanni & Nanni" movies or "Wo ist Fred?" starring Til Schweiger.

The story (2 brothers love the same woman) has been done a lot and most of the time better. One of the most ridiculous things about this film are the English names of the central characters. It's always so icky when they do that in German productions, even if they live abroad. For drama purposes, they include a leukemia storyline and some massive developments packed into the last 5 minutes in terms of drama, arguing and reconciliation. Finally, I believe this is not as bad as the worst "Schmonzetten" out there, but it's also not close to being a good or even great film. Not recommended.
