This film was shot in the Dogme 95 style, which dictates no lighting, no professional actors and no script.
This film violated the spirit of Dogme 95 by using a script as well as the Director's insistence on story boarding each scene. The film makers later found out that the originators of Dogme 95 also violated their own rules in films like Breaking the Waves (1996).
The dolly shot in the library was done 45 times before the cinematographer was satisfied with the take. The editor chose the third take as the best and steadiest shot.
One of the actors showed up drunk for a scene in which the two protagonists were supposed to be drinking. He then insisted it was method acting, when the director, crew, and other actors tried to call him on it.
Due to the nature of the protagonist's madness it was important to shoot most of the scenes sequentially. Since this was the cast, crew, and director's first film it is possible to watch the quality of the film improving with each successive scene as all involved began to learn their craft.
