- Dexter wonders if his father's Code is truly the right path, and hopes to get answers by accompanying Trinity on an out-of-town road trip, while Debra discovers that her single-minded pursuit of Trinity has blinded her to the truth.
- Dexter has always known his father's Code was meant to protect him from exposure. But after committing a serious mistake, he wonders if it could have been designed to protect him from something even more dangerous - human emotion. When he discovers that Arthur is planning an out-of-town trip, Dexter sees an opportunity to ride along and gain insight into the mind of a fellow monster. Even so, Dexter isn't prepared for the startling revelations Arthur makes along the way, revelations about his own past which only serve to convince Dexter of what he must do. Meanwhile, back at Miami Metro, Debra refuses to let a technicality keep her off the Trinity case. She works through others to ensure her voice is heard - that is, until she realizes that her single-minded pursuit of the Trinity Killer may have blinded her to the truth.
- Open with Dexter lamenting mistakenly killing photographer Farrow, having believed him to be a serial killer of models. Farrow's assistant, Brand, has confessed to killing those models and Angel says this is confirmed by DNA evidence.
Debra tells the department about her investigation of Trinity's bludgeoning murders. Debra highlights that Trinity points his victim's hands towards the ash smudges, then "accidentally" includes a picture of one of Trinity's other murders. Maria notices and Debra reveals Lundy's full Trinity serial murderer hypothesis and the connection to her own shooting.
Cut to Trinity bending over his newly built coffin, almost as if in prayer. He covers it with a tarp.
Dexter drops in on Trinity who says he's moved past the dead deer incident, but is snapping at his family. Trinity is heading to Tampa by himself for a new build. His wife mentions that Trinity always comes back from his trips "so relaxed."
Dexter searches for a conference he can travel to in Tampa. Debra pops in complaining that she cannot investigate Trinity since she's a victim.
Dexter pitches a weather conference to Maria and then Rita. They approve. Dexter has to agree to watch the kids on Tuesday nights while Rita is at yoga.
Dexter packs for his planned out-of-town kill, electing to bring Trinity's hammer.
We see Trinity preparing a fresh vile of ashes to take with him to Tampa. Dexter (as Kyle) shows up and pleads with Trinity take him along. Dexter says he feels a sense of purpose when he is with Trinity. Trinity finally lets him in the van.
The department has narrowed the Trinity suspect to a tall white male between 50 and 70 years old. Due to some behind-the-scene coaxing from Debra, they decide to do a cheek swab DNA sweep. Angel and Maria work together on finding budget room for the sweep.
During their drive Trinity asks Dexter about his troubles. Dexter tells Trinity he is tortured by having accidentally killed a man. A weepy Dexter says it was a hunting accident.
After checking into his hotel room Dexter gets a call from Debra. She's is looking for some of his crime scene photos and isn't allowed to access the department computer. She tells him about the random cheek swabs.
Before Dexter can go get the necessary "kill room" supplies, Trinity tells him there is a change of plans for the following morning.
While working late Angel starts to flirt with Maria. Quinn sticks his head in to say some of the guys are going to donate a vacation day to help pay for the DNA sweep. Maria locks the door and she and Angel have at it, passionately, on top of a desk.
Christine shows up late at Quinn's place complaining that if she doesn't come up with a juicy story she'll get fired. When the half-drunk Quinn gives her a hug she looks over his shoulder and spots a notice about the DNA sweep.
Trinity runs into Dexter the next morning before he can head to his conference to establish an alibi.
Debra tries to get Quinn to help her get Dexter's additional crime scene photos from Vince. Quinn goes to Vince, who says he likes the idea.
Dexter and Rita's neighbor Elliot takes the kids fishing. Afterward he offers to stick around and help clean their catch.
Trinity takes Dexter to his childhood home and forces his way inside. Upstairs Trinity tells Dexter the bathroom is "where it all started." As a child he was watching his sister take a shower and scared her. His sister slipped and cut her artery on some glass and died. Trinity's parents blamed him and his mother eventually committed suicide. This left the young Trinity home alone with his abusive alcoholic father. The implication is that Trinity killed (bludgeoned?) his father. Trinity says he told Dexter his background to help Dexter feel better.
Christine corners Debra outside the station and asks for confirmation about the DNA sweeps. To keep Christine away from the sweep story Debra agrees to give an interview.
Dexter takes Trinity to the restaurant in the hotel hosting his conference. Dexter checks in briefly and takes a picture with one the entertainment for an alibi.
Rita, Elliot and the kids are having a grand old time back in Miami.
When Dexter return to the restaurant Trinity has forced himself upon a couple and their two children. Trinity's told them all about the visit to his childhood home and his role in his sister's death. Dexter takes him away when Trinity tries to tell them Dexter's recent revelation.
Maria nearly catches Debra looking at evidence in the bathroom. After Maria leaves Debra takes a close look at one of her gunshot wounds and starts cursing. She goes to Vince, having noticed that the angle of wound don't look right. They conclude Debra's shooter had to be closer to Vince's height and that the taller Trinity suspect could not have shot her.
After Trinity goes to his room that night, Dexter starts to prepare.
Rita and Elliot enjoy a bottle of wine and share stories about their past. They have a "moment" before Rita realizes what is happening and cuts the night short.
Dexter finishes his kill room and breaks into Trinity's room only to find him gone. Dexter heads to the parking lot and sees Trinity has left his van and taken his tools.
Dexter finds Trinity on the roof of the build site. With hypodermic in hand, Dexter sneaks up behind Trinity. Trinity pours the ashes over the side and is just about to jump to his death when Dexter grabs him. The hypodermic smashes on the ground below as Dexter holds Trinity by one arm. Dexter seems to decide to let him fall, but two site workers arrive and pull Trinity to safety. Trinity is overjoyed that God sent Dexter "to save me."
Debra tells Angel, Maria and Quinn her news. The upside for Debra is that she is back on as lead of the Trinity investigation since it is now likely that Trinity was not her assailant. Angel will be lead on the Lundy/Debra case.
In the car Trinity tells Dexter his suicide attempt was a mistake but assures him he is no longer confused. They come upon one of the DNA sweeps. After Dexter explains what is happening, Trinity pulls out of line before they can be checked, and makes a U-turn.
