The Great Thomas
Fats Waller and Myra Johnson perform Waller's great signature tune in this soundie.
Soundies were short films, about three minutes in length, meant to be played on a machine called a Mills Panoram. These video jukeboxes could be found in bars, lounges, and night clubs. For a dime you got one of ten shorts, and the selection was changed weekly. Between 1940 and 1946, Mills and other companies produced over two thousand of these movies.
I'll listen to Waller perform any time. Thomas Waller learned to play the organ in church, then took his technique to less reputable venues, and perfected a style and personality to fit. He died in 1943 at the age of 39..... far too young.
