A Fun Little Short
brandonb-355283 May 2021
If you watched Soul and thoroughly enjoyed it even loved that film there is no reason to not watch this. Some people will over analyze it and either hate it or love it for their own pretentious reasoning. When this is really just a fun little adventure with 22 that pokes fun at her character growth before soul and a few good laughs. Just enjoy it and don't over analyze something that isn't supposed to be Citizen Kane.

We need a short for Terry.

Easy, simple, short. Everything a good story needs. I only needed Terry, he was my favorite character in Soul, I felt so identified with him. We need a short for Terry.

Soulless.

'22 vs. Earth (2021)' is a short film focusing on the exploits of 22 as she attempts to defy the natural order of 'the great before' and prevent her friends from discovering their passion and inevitably making their way to earth. It's not bad, but it feels redundant because the lead character doesn't really develop all that much and the flick's events, broadly speaking, were already covered in 'Soul (2020)'. It's essentially just a series of gags surrounding a single central premise, without a proper driving force or message behind it. It isn't especially funny or, even, all that engaging. However, it's entertaining enough to be worth a watch if you're a fan of the character. It's alright. 5/10.

W.C.W/N.W.O Souled Out.
southdavid4 March 2022
I have to first admit to not having seen "Soul" yet, so if that's integral to my understanding of this short Pixar film on Disney plus, then you're just going to have to bear that in mind. Taken in its own merit, I thought this was a decent and amusing, if perhaps slight, short.

22 (Tina Fey) does not see the appeal in jumping to Earth from the astral plain that she and the other souls currently inhabit. She encourages a small group of young souls to join her in her rebellion and though each is vocal in their support, the very mechanism of rebelling often provides them with the characteristic they need to move on.

I'm not convinced I'm going to be able to stretch this review out to my usual 300 or so words. Amusing but slight sums up the experience pretty completely. Aside from Tina Fey, who voices the main character - you have Richard Ayoade and Alice Braga who provide voices for Counselors, who are their to encourage the souls to move on and provide a commentary on 22's failures.

The art style is a cute mix of the classic Pixar character, blended with some esoteric graphics. It made me chuckle a couple of times but, as I say, it feels slight. Maybe once I've seen "Soul" it will take on a greater meaning.

Excellent Short
Dog-River1 May 2021
An entertaining prequel short of the feature film, Soul. It was interesting seeing 22 prior to Joe Gardner's arrival and there's plenty of comedy moments. As usual, Disney and Pixar's animation is outstanding. I highly recommended this short.

Waste of 6 minutes

This was insanely pointless. I know not much can be done with a short but at least use them to flesh out characters. This just rehashed what we already saw in the main movie?

I didn't even like the movie that much so I wasn't expecting to love this short. I don't hate it because it was so banal that I just felt I wasted time?

Outtakes from Soul
jonfong-213-1947882 May 2021
This is like a 5 min clip that's more like an outtake from the movie. It doesn't even have an ending.

Struggling a bit with this one Warning: Spoilers
"22 vs. Earth" is an animated short film from April 2021, so really not old at all, exactly a month in fact. I think the running time of nine minutes here is not correct as five or six seems more accurate and I think I had the full version indeed. Of course, the fact that this has been seen by so many already these last weeks has absolutely to do with it being a Pixar production that is closely linked to the Oscar-winning full feature film soul. Actually, it takes place before that movie and is also set on a different planet. I have not seen Soul, but I'm pretty sure I would not have liked this short more if I had seen it already. At least, this one here does not get me any more curious to give it a go. I do agree with the other reviewer that it does get a little bit better towards the end here, but I don't wanna be as harsh this time. It's not a failure, but also not particularly inspired. The only somewhat good moments are when these creatures say that they like 22 when they are not supposed to say so. Very early on, there is this moment when the kids are just joking a bit around and it's neither really funny nor cute. The title character's unsuccessful attempts to make Earth seem as unappealing as it gets were also not a revelation to watch overall.

I honestly thought this would be better. Pixar short films directly linked to Pixar full feature films never really have a shot at Oscar glory anyway, but even if this one here did not have such a connection, it would not be triumphant I'm positive. Also these supervision creatures did almost nothing for me and honestly for a Pixar film I was a bit surprised how low the visual quality felt here and there. Unusual. This also applies to these creatures I just mentioned. As for the voice acting, it's all about Tina Fey from 30 Rock and she is of course also key in Soul. Ayoade deserves a mention too I guess. The writer here is Josh Cooley, an Oscar winner for Toy Story 4 and with the direction they took a usual route and Kevin Nolting was in charge here, previously a prolific editior, but they give them often chances to direct short films the way it happened here. Sadly, the outcome is not on the level where I would be happy to see him direct a full feature film for Pixar soon. It's a thumbs-down for me. Did not win me over in terms of visuals, story or emotion. Go watch something else instead. Even if you watched and liked Soul, this is not ecen close to being a must-see.

CUTE.

A cute little short film that fans of "Soul" should enjoy. I don't think this short adds a lot more in terms of character depth and is much more kid-friendly than the feature it's based on, but I still think it is a fun way to spend a few minutes. Overall, it is charming and fun but doesn't add much to the already fascinating universe of "Soul."

Does it impolite to earth?
MK_Movie_Reviews23 August 2021
This film's cover looks cute so I picked it up on Disney Plus but honestly, it was disappointing.

Those cute characters were adorable but sometimes they came up with negative words and were impolite to earth. Maybe, it irony concept but I think that is not good for a family movie. But it runs only 9 min so it's ok.

The mischief of a soul that didn't want to go to Earth
Elvis-Del-Valle4 December 2023
This prequel to Soul is a small glimpse into the world of souls that 22 inhabited before arriving on Earth. It is a very fun and entertaining animated short film with a warm and quite soft visual. 22 is a pretty crazy character, ready to plot against Earth, but the result is a pretty hilarious failed plan. 22 and his henchmen make this little story quite fun and easy to enjoy. We must not also forget the participation of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails in this short film with a fairly soft score. 22 Vs. Earth is a fun short film that serves as a prologue to Soul. My final rating for this short film is a 9/10.

Very good short if you have watched Soul
diegofranchini30 June 2021
This is a very good short, with a few funny, even if predictable, moments. The thing I have seen people complain is that it lacks character development or story, which I disagree because this short happens before 22 actually develops in Soul, and in this short we see why 22 believes that she shouldnt go to earth.

The animation is very good like always and the style of animation is the same as in Soul which I really enjoyed. And the humour is pretty good if you have seen Soul otherwise you wont even understand half of what is happening.
