- After driving through a scorched earth, Joel and Ellie are forced to stop in Kansas City since the road is obstructed by trucks and cars. Joel decides to take a detour crossing the city, but they are attacked by a gang. Joel kills the guys and Ellie saves him from an attacker using her hidden pistol. They are forced to leave the truck and the supplies and flee to hide themselves. Joel decides to move to a skyscraper to see the movement in the city. Meanwhile, the leader of the Kansas City resistance group that has defeated FEDRA, Kathleen Coghlan, is hunting down a man called Henry and his brother Sam. - Traveling through Missouri, Joel and Ellie are forced to take a detour through Kansas City, where they are ambushed. Joel kills two of the bandits, but a third overpowers him and nearly chokes him to death before Ellie saves him by shooting the man with Frank's pistol. More bandits find the bodies; their leader, Kathleen, believes Joel and Ellie might be in contact with a man named Henry and orders a manhunt. Joel counsels Ellie about the firefight and gives her the pistol back. Kathleen's second-in-command Perry thinks he has found Henry's hideout, but something is growing under the building. Kathleen orders it kept secret until they find Henry. Joel and Ellie sleep in a high-rise apartment for the night, hoping they can scout a way out of the city in daylight. They awaken to find Henry and his younger brother Sam holding them at gunpoint.
- Ellie does a bit of gun practice in the washroom of a gas stop, they make puns and jokes. Ellie finds a gay porn mag in the backseat, has a look then tosses it out. A Hank Williams tape plays. They camp for the night off the road, Joel warns of other people who will have bad intentions. He introduces her to morning coffee and they hit the road.
Driving past ruins, they have a 25 hour trip ahead. They talk about Joel's brother Tommy. They are stopped by a traffic jam in Des Moines. Taking a detour they get lost in the city core streets, they run into an ambush. In the gunfight Joel shoots two or three. Ellie saves Joel with her gun. The wounded attacker says his name is Bryan and pleads for his life. Joel administers a kill shot.
At an armed camp an older man is questioned. He is a Fedra Quisling, but a Doctor. Kathleen can't bring herself to kill him. Bryan is brought in mortally wounded. They think someone named Henry is behind it. A large group of armed people search for the outsiders. In hiding, Joel thanks Ellie but feels bad she had to shoot Bryan. He gives a quick gun lesson on the two hand grip, then gives her the handgun.
Kathleen waits for updates. Her teams continue searching. They find an attic that held kids recently. And a mysterious large entity under the floor in a storage room.
Joel and Ellie enter a tall building and walk up the staircase, 33 floors. They make a bed on the floor and share a laugh over a pun. Later they are awoken by young boy armed with a gun.
