A delightful story - breakout performance by Clara Rugaard
bosporan25 May 2022
A fabulous tale, following Neve Kelly investigating her own murder. It is well paced, has some surprising twists and turns and is filmed against a beautiful backdrop with some stunning cinematography.

Enjoyable and entertaining, it wins no awards for originality, but on its own terms it delivers a credible, authentic story which is a joy to watch. Clara Rugaard is outstanding as Neve portraying a range of emotions, from bewilderment at being dead, sadness over things she learns to indignant rage at the perpetrator.

There are weaknesses, some of the casting choices are questionable, there are several liberties taken with plot flow and the final episode struggles to be relevant with little work left to do.

Despite the above, this is a good watch. A second season is possible, but it will likely lack the emotional punch required.

Great Binge Watch
skpn12325 April 2022
I found this to be engaging, touching, twisty, and heartfelt - everything it needed to be to provide a strong commentary on love in its many forms and family. The young cast were very strong and the cinematography haunting. A little bit of cheese here and there but short-lived and more than easy to endure. A pleasure.

This is what a teenage drama should be. I'm looking at you The CW.
timorefabula25 April 2022
This is a supernatural drama involving teenagers like many other being done nowadays but, and this is a very big but, well done.

The leading actress gives a really good performance, you can emphasize with her whole journey, and most of the rest of the lead cast was appropriate. With their ups and downs, obviously, but nothing that was annoying. At least to me and the wife.

Despite involving teenagers, there are very few moments where characters decide to make something completely stupid or acting all hysteric because of some lazy writing. You better learn The CW.

The story is quite good, and neither my wife nor me could guess the real murder until it was revealed. That was a nice bonus since in this type of shows generally you can guess the murderer way before the writers intended and the """"clever"""" ways they use to hide that became annoying.

The lead character's new relationship, both of the detectives involved in the investigation and the ending are sure to upset some people because of what involves, but, I hope, for the majority will be alright and a reasonable ending. Just ignore the crying babies.

Finally, because maybe it wasn't so obvious during my review, this is how to make an interesting teenage supernatural drama The CW. Hope you learn.

Too Loooong
CC_Sings23 April 2022
Promising start, way too many episodes. I liked the premise but the delivery fell short, this could have been done in 4 or 5 episodes, 8 was just silly. It kept me guessing for a while. Some good performances and I must admit I got a teeny weeny bit emosh a couple of times 😃

Beau Sejour?
william-shirkey22 April 2022
Seems awfully similar to a series out of Belgium, called Hotel Beau Sejour. I will continue to watch and hope it doesn't disappoint! ................,.......................

Excellent. Compelling. Emotive. Original. Beautiful.
interastral3 June 2022
The Rising was a really great surprise for me. I was expecting mediocre UK drama, but got something completely unique and really intriguing.

I love that this show is set in a small village in the middle of nowhere, and shows the unusual countryside culture of northern England. It almost feels like a Steven King story, but in Britain. The countryside and the forest are enchanting and spooky.

One of the best things is that you really have no idea who the murderer is at all throughout the whole series. The plot definitely keeps you engaged and guessing. It's a subtle psychological mystery horror.

But also it's a story about love and loss and the power of love to transcend death. It's a really moving show about characters who are both believable and likeable.

Over all it's a really well told modern ghost story. I hope they make a second series with a similar premise but new characters. I highly recommend The Rising - Check it out!

"Dead Like Me" arc not easy to do...
A_Different_Drummer23 April 2022
... Which is why most production companies will not even attempt it. One of the problems is that the audience already knows how the story ends, so the challenge is to establish a strong connection with the viewer, to make the viewer get involved in the story and actually CARE. The first episode shows solid writing, acting, and production values. The scene with the dog was clever and moving. Count me in. ((Designated "IMDb Top Reviewer." Engaging
lusciousmuffins24 April 2022
Despite a few missed opportunities and a couple dropped threads, this is an excellent series overall.

Anyone who has dealt with the grief of a sudden loss will be very moved by several aspects of this story.

The writers tapped successfully into grief in a way that made it feel authentic.

Their approach to the supernatural elements of this tale was not heavy handed, which helped avoid the hokeyness that sometimes hampers films in which a ghost is a central character.

For the most part, the large cast did a solid job bringing the village featured in this movie to life.

There were a few woke elements woven into this tale, but props to the writers for not being too heavy handed with them.

While one important moment was hijacked by a me too diatribe, in general, social justice took a back seat to story and character development, which made for a far more engaging final product.

I would consider this series very with watching, particularly for fans of ghost stories, murder mysteries, and small town dramas.

Drags on for too long
antabal23 April 2022
Enjoyable enough but by episode 5 I just wanted to skip the rest and just watch the finale. It's definitely not a 10/10 by any reach.

It started off well but for me the secondary characters weren't on the same level as Neve and her mother.

Ok for 6 episodes
wildbillyhutton24 April 2022
Then it degenerated into nonsense.

Which is a pity because it had the makings of an interesting series - but 4 episodes instead of 8 would have made the whole thing tighter.

Decent acting, but not recommended.

Loved it!
ukxenafan13 May 2022
The premise sounded interesting and I was hooked after the first episode. I've just finished bingeing all 8 and I absolutely loved it! The show combines a crime thriller with supernatural elements and a really interesting meditation on grief and toxic masculinity. I didn't guess the killer til the last episode and it had a satisfying and exciting climax along with a really bitter sweet melancholic ending. The cast were great. The young lead had a look of Alicia Vikander about her so I wasn't surprised to see she was Danish but I thought the actress playing her mother was really good too. It is always a thrill when you take a chance on a show you know nothing about and it turns out to be a winner.

Review moved now cancellation confirmed.
southdavid7 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm going to review this, for now, as if it's the first season of a show that's going to continue in some form, although I might move the review to the shows main page if that proves not the be the case. The Belgian show that this is adapted from has gone down the anthology route for it's second run. For what it's worth, I think that this first season of "The Rising" was fine, but I doubt I'll remember it in 12 months' time.

Neve (Clara Rugaard) awakens in a lake and, having swum to shore, walks home. She comes to realise that she has been murdered, and is a ghost, unable to interact or be seen by her friends and family. She begins to follow her own murder investigation but is plagued by a fear of the woods nearby where she lived. This continues until, following the wider discovery of her body, her estranged, alcoholic father Tom (Matthew McNulty) inexplicably seems to be able to see her.

Despite a relatively outlandish idea ultimately, I felt "The Rising" was perhaps a little to pedestrian for its own good. It doesn't particularly exploit that idea as it might, for example, Neve doesn't spend enough time listening to conversations with people that don't know she's there. Part of the problem is that, in the end, too many people end up with the ability to see her. There is a reason why the people that can see her can, a reason that becomes guessable pretty quickly, but one person who can doesn't seem at all surprised by it, which remains baffling when the resolution to the story comes. There are also a few moments when the internal logic of the show doesn't hold up, which wouldn't be such a problem except the show makes a big deal out of aspects of it. Also, and this is the biggest thing I wonder might be lost in translation from adapting the Belgian show, but the story hinges around a motocross club which in reality should be a middle-class time waste, but occasionally here is more like "Sons of Anarchy".

I appreciate that from that list of my issues, it might feel like the show is poor. It's not, it's fine. There are genuinely good performances from of a cast of recognisable, if not perhaps 'household' names, particularly those that have to deal with worst of scenarios opening up for them. The murder mystery story works, gently pointing you down a route of misdirection and playing with your suspicions before a conclusion that was, at least, satisfying. It's just that in all areas it's .... and here's that word again ... fine, rather than brilliant.

More soap opera than supernatural
CrazyArty18 June 2022
Sky TV-series set in England. After a big party a young woman wakes up in a lake and realises she is actually dead. As a ghost she begins to investigate her own murder.

I like the the concept and it has some decent acting. However, it's too long for the content, it's too much of a soap opera, too much talking and not enough plot progression or excitement. They missed a trick in not developing the characters upfront. It's okay.

Perfectly passable series

Warning: Spoilers
All the clowns leaving 1* reviews after only watching one episode or complaining about the "woke box ticking excercise" - you're the problem, stick to low brow trash and shows from the 90s if you're not comfortable with seeing two women kiss.

The show was fairly well paced, gradually developing as Neve comes closer to her killer, some memorable moments and the plot was fairly water tight.

People complaining about the fact only certain people can see Neve, if you'd watched more than one episode you might have actually learnt why this is. 👍🏼

Best sky original but that's not difficult
fasterboarder6 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The storyline is original but has its plot holes , some big but I ignored them because it intrigued me ,the plot gives you plenty of suspects to ponder over so beware of early presumptions , I was disappointed by some acting performances In earlier episodes but realised given time and more understanding of the way the story unfolded it's probably how they were told how to play their roles , imho the writers don't understand small town politics so it was let down by the way some characters turned on each other on a whim but having said all that I really enjoyed it and was glad it didn't turn into a series.

Rising, but never raised fully.
Martipee6 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
What a fantastic concept for a TV series: a dead person investigating their own death. Probably not an original when described, but all the same, you can have numerous variations on the idea to create something entertaining and memorable.

Cast is excellent, as is all production. Script is worthy of a mention too as is the storyline, nothing is really missed and should attract high ratings, but unfortunately doesn't. So why?

TV today is infatuated with emotional outbursts: anger, sadness, fear, paranoia..... all displayed here in a manner mimicking a 1920's silent movie. It seems as the world cannot control itself if we think everyone would react the way script-writers think. These constant pointless moments spoil the atmosphere.

Throw in the compulsory same-sex relationship because that's what all Brit-shows do to try to appease the 'woke-brigade'. Totally unnecessary and almost contrary to the characters condition. Anyone would think jumping sides is like changing socks.

And the ending - usually there's lots of red-herrings in UK shows where the viewer gets to guess the murderer. Not here. The killer is barely shown and their motive is well-stretched and barely believable.

Worthy of watching for its originality and acting, but you might feel a little let down in what it could have been.

Poor
aleatoriiyg-5809229 April 2022
I'd never seen a "Sky Original" before, but it was pretty much what I expected, low budget, mostly poor acting although they were saddled with such a poor script. Would've bailed after a couple of episodes, but was informed "it gets better", so stuck with it.

Cliché-ridden, clunky, and full of plot holes, I wish I hadn't bothered.

Superbly brilliant suspense thriller
tproses30 April 2022
I rarely write reviews but after binge watching all episodes I feel compelled to. This series is superbly written, directed and produced. The actor's performances are top class and despite other reviewers suggesting pace is slow, I found every minute of every episode held my attention. The characters are brilliantly crafted and believable and I found myself drawn into their world. I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves sci-fi, thriller and supernatural dramas.

Award for the worst hairstyles goes to.......
steven-180652 May 2022
This is an interesting story that is a little slow but keeps you guessing. I found it engaging and for the most part the acting was good. Its a decent binge watch thats not to difficult to follow and can be done in one sitting if you have the time. My main criticism is the hairstyles of some of the cast! We have mullets, dodgy cut fringes and patches of hair brushed forward on an otherwise shaven head! Please please sort this out if there is a season 2!!!!!

Too long. I could have fast forwarded through the last 4 episodes. Too many lapses in reality, relied on magic and too heavily leaned on LGBT preconceptions.

Too long, descends into nonsense
dolyschaf22 June 2022
This was very good to begin with, but the moderb need to include lesbian scenes was totally pointless and unnecessary. The final two episodes or this became silly and I only watched to find out whodunnit. Clara Ruggard is great in this but where do you with Neve after 8 episodes, other than her become the new Marty Hopkirk character helping her father solve up north crimes? Clara Ruggard did a great job but the script fizzled out like a damp squib aftee episode 6. Worth a watch once solely for a top performance by Ms Ruggard as the lead.

Solid and decent OKAY
Almost_Soldout23 April 2022
This show doesn't need your brain to work hard. Good gum for your mind on the weekend not to think about your personal stuff. Of that was a goal, it's achieved. The quality of the project is quite average in any aspect of that.

Beautifully filmed and a rare series actually well written without huge holes in the storyline. Convincing characters and sensitive acting make for a captivating series. Like a good book, difficult to put down one you start watching...
