Surprisingly fun to watch
ddog-1739717 September 2022
I didn't expect to like this movie, but it was actually very fun to watch.

It felt like it was on the brink of being unfunny, but still remained funny, which is much more than most movies that I've seen this year. This movie also was moving, but it did feel a bit blown out of proportion.

I actually enjoyed all the stuff with Kong, which i expected to be extremely annoying and stupid.

It was just a fun little movie to watch, that may feel extremely long. For some reason, this film felt like it was like 3 hours long, which was fine, since it was an enjoyable experience.

I would give this a 7/10.

Started as a comedy, finished as a tearful drama with chinese moral
hakra12 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A guy with no friends and family gets left behind on the moon with the only compagnionship of a canguroo. The woman and comander in charge and at the same time the main reason why the guy was on the mission, sacrifices him twice to save the earth.

What started as a funny comedy that I highly enjoyed, unfortunately in the last 20 minutes turned into a drama telling us that the individual has no value seeing the whole picture from the perspective of the big mass. It just tells us that sometimes we have to sacrifice the individual so that the mass can be fine.

A bit bitter message after the post-pandemic years when people died or suffered from wrong treatments or forced seclusion.

With the exception of this message and the deadly end of the funny hero i enjoyed the movie, got a lot of loughs and the pace was fine.

A serio-comic sci-fi about one man and his kangaroo on the moon
timothyrobins-9747020 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Eye popping special effects and slick editing make Moon Man an easy and entertaining watch.

The film playfully mashes together a number of sci-fi cinema tropes found in films such as Armaggedon, The Martian and Independance Day 2 (but without the aliens).

Shen Teng. Plays an engineer assigned to maintain a moon base set up to save the Earth from a massive meteorite. Teng is engaging as the stranded astronaut, Dugu Yue, who can do nothing but watch on in horror as meteor fragments hit the Earth.

Contacted by survivors, he is set up as an inspirational figure, a role he eventually fulfills. As time passes. Yue must contend with a large Red Kangeroo left behind by research scientists and the knowledge that only the creature and he stand between Earth and an extinction level event.

The film is thoroughly entertaining, balancing, as it does, humour and drama. There is a space romance beteen. Dugu. Yue (Teng ), and. Ma Lanxing (played by. Ma Li.) and, comedically., the Kangeroo.

Check it out if you can.

Family friendly sci-fi comedy
luangsean18 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The scene design is very futuristic, but it is also very pleasing to children, suitable for family viewing. Funny style as always, but doing cross talk with a kangaroo who can't talk is so challenging that some of the hilarious bits aren't too funny. The timing of the soundtrack is perfect, but only if you are a Chinese in the 80s and 90s. As a comedy, it can only be at an average level, compared with the previous works of Mahua FunAge, it is in the middle and lower level.

Chinese Sci-Fi Comedy
stevendbeard3 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I saw Moon Man, starring Teng Shen-Only Fools Rush In, Lost In Russia; Li Ma-Never Say Die, Goodbye Mr. Loser and Yuan Chang-Warm Hug, Airpocalypse.

This is a Chinese sci_fi/comedy that is sub_titled. I usually don't like to read a movie but sometimes you just grit your teeth and go for it. Teng plays a maintenance man that works on the moon at a special base that keeps an eye out for any dangerous asteroids headed for the Earth. Li plays the commander of the base and Teng is infatuated with her, but never gets a chance to actually talk to her. Yuan plays a fellow co_worker at the base. When a giant asteroid is on a direct course for Earth, there isn't time to stop it and everyone has to evacuate back to Earth to be with their loved ones. Everyone except Teng, who is busy writing a love letter to Li and doesn't hear the evac call. Teng is stranded for 2 years on the moon while everyone that survived the asteroid bombardment of Earth tries to figure out a way to bring Teng home. Oh yeah, there is a kangaroo-yes, I said kangaroo-on the moon with Teng for comical entertainment. It seems that he was also left behind in the evacuation.

There wasn't a rating or even a trailer-that's why I didn't know it was sub_titled-but it had a running time of 2 hours & 2 minutes.

It's not one that I would buy on DVD but it would be alright as a rental.

Escapist, joyful, family entertainment of the sort which Hollywood has forgotten how to make.
KuroSawWhat7 September 2022
Wonderfully enjoyable and suitable for the whole family, Moon Man is what I had hoped for from The Martian: The jokes are better, the science is good (enough), and the main character is far more likeable, with many moments of laughter and genuine emotion.

In a packed house of mostly Chinese viewers, everyone was having such a good time that even after 2 hours, no one budged from their seat when the end credits started appearing. The woman behind me must have said "oh my god!" to the events on screen at least a dozen times. The film is silly and fun in a way that you simply don't see in Hollywood any more.

Also, major props to the CGI and strong direction! There were so many downright beautiful scenes, taking full advantage of the space setting! This is definitely one to catch on the big screen, if at all possible!

Surprisingly enjoyable and moving
barryhaworth-114 September 2022
I am currently on holidays and decided to go to the movies. The only science fiction movie I could find currently screening was something called "Moon Man", a Chinese language movie billed as a science fiction comedy. This was about a man stranded on the moon when an emergency causes his colleagues to evacuate their moon base. That was about all I knew about it - that, and that it had done very well at the Chinese box office when it was released earlier this year. I almost didn't go, but am glad I did as I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to. It was funny, and moving, and beautifully shot - the SFX and visuals and music were spectacular. It had periods of comedy, periods of groan-and-wait-it-out silliness (who brings a kangaroo to the moon?), and others of well thought out science fiction action. At times it had me laughing aloud, and it even managed to move me to tears at one spot. If I had to nit pick I would mention that they didn't make much of an attempt to simulate lunar gravity, and they had things like vehicles stirring up clouds of dust that hung in the (non-existent) air, but these are minor. The movie was subtitled and there were some signs which did not get translated, some of which looked like they were important to the plot.

There were not very many people in the session I went to (four or five, maybe) and there are not many sessions. Here in Australia it was being screened as part of an Asian film festival. I would recommend it very strongly to any science fiction fan - see it on the big screen if you get the opportunity.

It's a nice and heart-warming sci-fi comedy!! I love it!!
ajleong-9872511 September 2022
The storyline is quite interesting! The movie is filled with happiness and sadness which touches one's heart very much!

The pace is good! Funny things come and go to keep your boredom away! So even though it's a 122 -minute movie, with the random jokes, you jz don't feel that long at all!

I am impressed by the CGI of the China's production team! All things on the moon and space look so real and so good! China's special effects in movies are rather mature now!

The funny parts are simple and natural, while not the Steven Chow's kinds that are over-done or over-acted. As such, I enjoyed it very much!

Even though the Kangaroo may look rather extra and is a nuisance at the beginning, you will get to accept it and value it at last.

I love the sentimental and human-value of this movie! It touches one's heart very much!

I gave 8 out of 10. It's definitely worth your money watching the cinemas! Trust me, you wouldn't enjoy it if you watch from your TV BOX or LAPPY!! You got to watch it in the cinema in order to enjoy it! Go, Go, Go!!

Definitely top class a sci-fi comedy movie
yuutsukimaimi31 July 2022
Definitely top class a sci-fi comedy movie, the movie effects about the moon and space are professional in comedy movie field. Most of the time comedy movie will not put too much effort on the effects cause they want to make some good punchline, but this movie done both so excellent. It's not the traditional comedy that makes you laugh from start to end, it also have moving parts that make you want to cry! But careful! Laughing parts is coming right after moving parts that stop you feeling sad lol.

One of the best and funniest opening sequences in a long time
bjjao9 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie had one of the best opening sequence in a movie i've seen in a long time. It was so funny and I laughed out loud many times. When he had the headphones on, and finally saw what was going on outside the window, and then racing after the ships, I got flashback to one of those Jackie Chan movies that used to also have really funny action comedy in the opening sequences.

Some of the sequences with the kangaroo was priceless:)

After the opening, the movie had its ups and downs. It really plays on your emotions, as I think many Chinese movies seem to do.

But it's sort of the same as other "disaster" movies tries to do, like "Armageddon" did back in the day.

I do wish that the movie had kept up as a action comedy trough out, and not switched to a "drama" in the end, but overall, this was a very good movie.

Full of heart, fun and quite nice CGI
klusik1 July 2023
This movie is AMAZING! 😃 It's a Chinese production, so yeah, it's a bit "weird," but it's really humorous, sweet, and cute. And yet, it's a nice story, and the physics is not as exaggerated as in American productions (although there are still some nonsenses). It looks pretty good, and overall, you believe in those people and the kangaroo (yeah, the kangaroo is the second main character).

The story makes sense, the main characters have clear motivations, and even during heart-wrenching scenes, there are occasional jokes, but they are not forced like in Marvel productions, where they try to squeeze in a joke every two minutes to meet some quota (or whatever, I have no idea why).

As for the visuals and CGI, it's evident that someone with an eye for detail worked on the overall designs and aesthetics. The sets have a somewhat cartoonish feel, yet they remain believable and actually quite beautiful. They have a classic sci-fi look to them.

Overall, I definitely recommend the film. Overlook the fact that it's in Chinese and turn on the subtitles, it's worth it. 8/10.

Great Sci-fi comedy. Highly recommended!
wangshuai9128 August 2022
If you are looking for a fun night from a top class Chinese Sci-fi Comedy movie. This is the one!

This is one of the most highly expected movie with one of the funniest Chinese comedian Shen Teng and Ma Li who are the leading stars from the Kai Xin Ma Hua Production team. They are my favourite Chinese comedians. And you won't be disappointed at all.

A heartwarming sci-fi comedy about a Chinese astronaut who believes he's the last human alive has revived China's box office in spectacular fashion. Moon Man, directed by Zhang Chiyu of the hit-making comedy troop Mahua FunAge, opened to $148 million over the weekend, including pre-sales, according to data from Artisan Gateway. Local ticketing app Maoyan projects the film to earn over $640 million (RMB 4.34 billion) before it leaves Chinese screens, which would make it the country's sixth-biggest film of all time.

"Moon Man" tells the story of "the last human in the universe" as an astronaut finds himself stranded on the moon after an asteroid wipes out life on earth. It is directed by Zhang Chiyu, who previously directed 2017 sports comedy hit "Never Say Die." It was produced by Mahua FunAge, a consistently successful comedy production firm.

Fall in love with the man in the moon.
breeze479 April 2023
This is one of the best films i've seen in years.

This is a very funny film with loads more to it than just a comedy.

The special effects are next level and make the action sequences stunning. The music is perfect, the acting is amazing and comedy timing is spot on.

The story successfully moves from comedy masterclass to heartwarming thriller and you'll be talking about it for days i bet. I will be.

It reminded me of cross between Red Dwarf and The Martian, i consider that very high praise. I'd happily watch this again with friends and enjoy them bursting with laughter again and again.

Only a couple of gags didn't get translated and i feel i missed a big one. No spoilers, but i'd like to know what the symbol was on Earth.

Chiyu Zhang is a director to watch out for and the cast was perfect.

Watch this film! You'll love it!

An adaptation that worked (as a 2hr movie)
mz012531 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, this is an adaptation of Cho Seok's "Moon You", a comedy webtoon.

Second of all, I have read the webtoon, and personally gave it a 10/10.

The webtoon format, like a book, gave the story a lot of room and time to develop. Despite the author's somewhat unusual sense of humor made of crazy and random wacky twists, the original webtoon hit a good balance of wackiness and proper emotions.

TL;DR: The movie managed to capture all the key ideas of the original, in a 2hr format, with few cringey changes. And the effects are actually really good for the budget they have. But personally think this adaptation should be a mini TV series of sort. To experience the full emotion roller coaster, you should check out the original webtoon, on Webtoon, search "Moon You"

----------- Spoilers ------------

----------- Spoilers ------------

----------- Spoilers ------------

The following is a summary of the webtoon:

The story is simple, kinda like Matt Damon got trapped on the Mars, Moon You, a biologist, got trapped on the Moon. But unlike Matt knowing that there is people on Earth for him to call, Moon You, after witnessing a gigantic asteroid hit the Earth head-on from the prime location of the Moon, and no one is answering his calls at all afterward, he assumed he is the last human in the universe.

Moon You, in his desperation, tried to off himself, after a few comedically fails due to environmental factors, in the end he was unable to actually do it by taking off his EVA suit helmet on the Moon, revealing that deep down, he doesnt want to die.

Different from Matt Damon's situation, Moon You had enough supplies to last him several lifetimes. So he ended up being Christ Pratt from the Passenger. He went on going through the grieving stages. Throughout this time, he discovered two other survivors, first one is a buffed up red kangaroo, who was part of the space cattle/food source program, and much later on, a human survivor who was a covert operative, and became a bit deranged due to isolation.

Despite the extraordinary options of companions, it beats no companion. Moon You managed to live with the unruly kangaroo, even gave him a name (Dai Dou, basically like Sir Kangaroo). And later on also forming a bond with the hermetic covert operative. This formed a big portion of the comedic interactions in the storyline.

Unknowing to Moon You, there are human survivors on Earth, and they can see him through the surveillance cameras in the Moon base from a very early time. They are unable to hear Moon You though, due to equipment issues and the nuclear winter situation on Earth. During Act I & II, this is pretty much the other half of the comedy, as the NASA people attempted to utilize Moon You's video feed to boost the survivor's morale. And needless to say, it wasnt easy, as they have no control on what image they can receive.

However, either due to NASA's attempts like hiring a dubber trying to improvise a dub on the live feed, or the ex machina type of signal lost/reception at the right time. Moon You became a beacon of hope on Earth. And when Moon You lost his only human companion and all his hope due to a meteorite storm, the survivors on Earth, lit up the surface to give him hope.

For Act III, Earth managed to re-establish connection with Moon You, and he pulled himself together, trying to work out a way to get him back on Earth. And just as he finish up the preparation, they find out that there is a world-ender size fragment from the original asteroid is on its way to collision 2.0. As a heroic attempt, Moon You shoved Dai Dou in the return pod, and stayed behind to launch both the return pod and the last of the nukes towards the incoming asteroid. In the end, Earth is saved, but the Moon base got destroyed. Yet Moon You managed to survive by himself on the Moon Surface by retreating deeper into the secret facility that his covert operative buddy used to occupy.

I personally think the webtoon story has the perfect pace and proportion of comedy and core story line. And the level of exaggerations are always spot on to make it fun but not out of control. Reading the webtoon made me feel like I am actually experiencing the events, and all of the events are indeed very probable in a real world situation. It's not just there to make you only laugh or cry, but it will make you sincerely laugh out loud while crying hard.

A film that expresses humanity
jameshuang-925378 October 2022
The movie's plot does not drag on, and the characters are well-developed, with a little laugh inserted in the middle for everyone's amusement. At the same time, the movie also makes twists and turns in several places to express Gudu Yue's desire to survive and his love for Ma Lanxing from the side.

I decided to give this movie full marks because it is similar to another movie I watched, "Wandering Earth," in that the protagonist has to choose between humanity and his family and ultimately decides on society. Of course, when the real crisis comes, we may not be able to do like Gudu Yue or Liu Peiqiang as great love, but we can start with some small things around us to do without guilt. Therefore, I highly recommend everyone to enjoy this movie.

This was out of this world...
paul_haakonsen19 May 2023
I had never heard about this 2022 Chinese sci-fi comedy movie titled "Du Xing Yue Qiu" (aka "Moon Man") before sitting down to watch it here in 2023. So I didn't know what I was in for here, and I didn't really have much of any expectations. However, the movie's synopsis sounded interesting enough, plus the fact that it was an Asian movie that I hadn't already seen, was more than sufficient to make me sit down and watch it.

Writers Chiyu Zhang, Chenguang Qian, Si'ao Dai, Yuyue Shen and Seok Jo put together a really enjoyable and entertaining script and storyline. And I will say that I was more than genuinely entertained throughout the course of the 122 minutes that the movie ran for. Thumbs up to the writers on the script that they conjured up for "Du Xing Yue Qiu".

I wasn't familiar with the cast ensemble in the movie, though I have to say that leading actor Teng Shen (playing Yue) put on a stellar performance and really carried the movie quite well. The entire cast in the movie put on good jobs, thought it was mostly Teng Shen on the screen.

The kangaroo that joined Yue on the screen was also a very lovable character and one that also came to play a big part in the movie. It had so much character and personality that you just can't help but love it.

There is a good amount of comedy, thrills, excitement and character development throughout the 122 minutes that the movie ran for, and director Chiyu Zhang really managed to utilize these elements rather well to build up the story and the characters.

Visually then "Du Xing Yue Qiu" was quite amazing. The special effects and CGI in the movie really were great and added a lot to the overall presentation of the movie. I was really impressed with how great the CGI looked and how realistic it looked. Sure, there were some issues about how gravity, or rather the low gravity, on the moon works, but hey, it wasn't a science-fact movie, now was it?

Regardless of whether you enjoy Chinese cinema or not, then "Du Xing Yue Qiu" is a sci-fi comedy that is well worth sitting down and spending 122 minutes on watching. It really is an amazing surprise of a movie, not to mention a really enjoyable movie as well.

This is without a doubt a movie that I warmly recommend you to sit down and watch, should you get the opportunity to do so. I am not normally overly keen on sci-fi movies in general, but I really genuinely enjoyed this movie from director Chiyu Zhang.

My rating of director Chiyu Zhang's 2022 movie "Du Xing Yue Qiu" lands on an nine out of ten stars.

Add English dub and take my money!
I can't tell you how rare it is for me to watch any movie with only English subtitles, it's rarer than the blue moon. However, this one is an exception with its warm hearted comedic style of one man's journey to get off the moon with a kangaroo that most people would throw out the airlock. In this world of negativity, it's a bright light and a definite asset to the Chinese filming industry. Bravo!! I love all the characters and there's nothing not to enjoy other than the fact of a incident to Earth.

Moon Man will make you laugh, cry, cheer for joy and hope this is the world that we can all live in.

Puts Hollywood to Shame
rossmcdee120 October 2022
Brilliantly directed, with superb acting, fabulous cinematography and a mostly funny and engaging script.

The CGI is as good as it gets, and makes the allegedly 'real' Moon missions of the 1960's (&later!) look like the shoddy fakes they certainly were.

Parts of this film reminded me of THE QUITE EARTH (1985) Australian sci-fi film.

However- The last 15minutes is very disappointing, it becomes clenchingly predictable and mawkish, and for that reason I would give this an 8 and half out of 10.

In fact the last 15minutes is full of all sorts of problems and makes you look back on the film less endearingly - as a type of glossy 'fake-space' propaganda for NASA/JAXA/ESA etc...

Nothing could go through meteorite fragments without being shredded in the process (like the unbelievable boring junk of the GRAVITY film).

The whole PREMISE of this film is unbelievable, so you can start watching knowing it is a FANTASY, not a realistic portrayal of any space station possibility. The main characters suit would be no use if any micrometeorites or shrapnel hit it, yet we can suspend our disbelief enough to enjoy the tale of his ordeal, and his slapstick relationship with a KANGEROO all as some escapist FUN..... so why ruin the ending with a stereotyped and disappointing 'climax'? Maybe producer pressure? Although I'd imagine they'd push for the opposite conclusion.

Maybe to avoid any 'awkward encounters'; as the main moon man is actually a bit of a 'creepy' obsessive character, cast in the mold of the Jerry lee Lewis/ Norman Wisdom loser/goon/fall guy, which you'd imagine has run its course by now, yet seems more persistent than ever in 'media-land'.

Wow, this movie is nice!
stewestriker20 December 2022
It's a good movie, of course there were maybe a couple of stupid jokes, but still, I liked it. The soundtracks and visuals are great, the story is funny, and at the same time it's full of hope, the thing that we need most right now. Just give it a try, don't search in this movie something hard-thinking, it's a sci-fi, as it must be.

I need to fill all this review with some info, hm, I wish I could play Homeworld on PC, but even at remastered version i've had a glitch or something and was always stuck at the same mission, number 3 as I remember. Happy New Year everybody and try to be always the best man, not just the middle one ;)

The best movie I have seen this year, joy and emotion coexist.
ghzea15 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Have to say, as a comedy film, "Moon man" is very touching.

The whole film has a very good rhythm and very dramatic turn, which makes people suddenly move to tears when they laugh. (By the way, I like the episodes in the film very much, which are pleasing to the ear and just right place. As much as you laughed in the first half of the movie, the story of the protagonist drifting and turning around in the back will be more surprising and even touching. The girl in the back row of me cried here for a while, and in the finale, she cried for a while when she watched Du Guyue embrace Big Ivan.

In a word, I think this film is worth the fare, whether it's a joke or a scene. The Shen Teng-Mali group can also be regarded as a sign of comedy film in China.

In the final, I would like to introduce a piece of knowledge to you. There is a hidden strongman in the movie: the Grade 8 fitter. Grade 8 workers are top craftsmen with exquisite skills, the highest level before the hierarchical reform. Given enough time, they can almost create the world.

Films like this are truly an enjoyable evening watch
BloodlessNoses29 July 2023
Didn't start the way I expected, didn't expect alot of the things that happened.

When writing this review I realised that the movie which seemed a little silly at first, had unexpected bursts of comedic genius that don't take away from the story. Which was surprisingly well formed, heartwarming and heroic in nature.

I'm giving this film a 10/10 because that's what I give all the films that leave me with a happy warm feeling when I'm done with them. I'm not watching something like this to challenge my life experiences, nor am I taking the world of film too seriously. If at the end of a movie I can say I'm happy I watched it from the bottom of my heart it deserves a solid 10.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film, had many good laughs with the mates and would recommend it for a casual watch anytime. You won't be dissapointed.
