Everything is... Funnier in Texas? Primo Review - JHN WRITINGS
An even attack on motherhood & family relatives reminds us of the importance of having Aunts & Uncles supporting the intermediate family like nothing had ever changed from the upbringing of a 2nd generation uproots memories of a late 90s sitcom repackaged. The budget seemed to be lacking a certain level of potential risks that may be associated with other highly touted series. It could at the very most be seen as a sexist attempt to remain relative in 2023, but alas, the derogatory remarks hold little sanction pitted with moral lessons enveloping each episode like we'd never lived past the year 2007. The actions of happening to develop the main character is what makes great writing. Primo never lacked confliction as the show moved along. There was always something for Rafa to learn and react to. Whether it was trying to impress Mya (Stakiah Lynn Washington) or struggling to find a way to make an impact on life itself. Read the FULL JHN REVIEW on JACOB HOLLINGSWORTH NETWORK.

Primo? But they are his uncles?
cruzhmd29 May 2023
The show so far iis good. But I wonder if any of these people know that PRIMO means cousin. Yet he calls everyone UNCLE..... Why don't they call him SOBRINO? No Sabo writers and no Sabo actors.it's a bit stereotypical as well. Not bad, and they are improving. Hoping for a better second season.

If they were to fix this suffix it will help the whole problem. It does have it's funny moments, some are cheesy and predictable. I guess it's getting better with Mexican related shows. At this moment I'm just mumbling to have this posted, that primo is cousin, yet he calls them uncles. Make this right, you NO SABO WRITERS.

Quirky, heartwarming comedy is a must watch!
astaskpsss20 May 2023
This story is so good combining quirky, funny with serious, and heartwarming. The acting is superb with each character well thought out, deep, joyful, and each unique!

The story is centered around a teen boy Rafa Gonzalez and his family, his mother Drea, and 5 uncles whom his mother raised since she was 12, Rollie, Mike, Ryan, Jay, and Mondo. Drea is the head of the family, and all her brothers adore her and their nephew Rafa.

The uncles all have unique personalities and points of view that cause them to quarrel and yet always come together, supporting and loving each other while teaching their nephew about life.

Their story will keep you laughing and watching.

I am so looking forward to this series continuing.

Only One Bad Thing About This Show.
The only bad thing about this show is that season one is over! Sorry for the gotcha title review, but now that you're reading this, seriously go check out this show! If you want a perfect balance between comedic and heartwarming, with so many quips you'll be ready for a rewatch immediately upon finishing as well as enough heartstring-tugging moments to feel like a balm for the soul, then sit back and let the Gonzales family into your home and into your hearts. The writing, the acting, the situational family chaos that ensues, is all so well done. This show is truly about showing up for the people you love and I sure hope we get a confirmed second season soon.

Delightful, Wholesome Fun
cemarkowski21 May 2023
AT LAST Shea Serrano brings his charm and wit to the big screen in this heart-warming comedy series. The hilarious antics of the Gonzalez family will keep audiences of all ages entertained. For me, the uncles are the stars of the show- each uniquely quirky and adorable without feeling too over the top. My favorite of the five truly changed from episode to episode! Drea and Rafa round out the family as the perfect mother-son duo with effortless one-liners wrapped up in a whole lot of love.

As a long time fan of Mr. Serrano, I was delighted to get a deeper insight into his teenage experience and the dynamics of his big, beautiful Mexican family. The glimpses of the Spurs and Fast & Furious memorabiliaI in Rafa's room kept me giggling throughout. I cannot recommend this show enough to anyone looking for a funny and honest portrayal of a high schooler's attempt to balance school, love, family and everything in between! Now bring on season 2!!

More Primo Please
mazevjeff30 July 2023
This show blends serious topics, unique perspectives, familiar emotions, and the funniest moments in a television show. The creators of Primo stuff a lot of great moments into a short runtime. I had to rewatch the series twice to catch more jokes.

Having a show that focuses on a high school student navigating young love felt a bit outside of my zone, considering I'm twenty years out of high school. However, the writing, casting, and acting kept me engaged and reminded me of my high school years and how they aligned with the show.

My only ask is to continue this story. I want more of these characters in my life. I can't wait to see what's next.

Has potential, but right now is only OK Warning: Spoilers
I really wanted to love this show. I always am looking for Latino comedies, but this show is only average with a lot of cliches. You know how TV dads were notorious for being dumber than a bag of rocks? This is like that except times 5. Actually, every male character is really stupid and the mother in the show is basically the only reasonable character (for the most part). No one can make their own breakfast, even eating their nephew's food everyday, but they have been fixing their sister's food in secret for over a decade? Rollie is dumb enough to sincerely believe that being in and out of jail is a good thing, then when Rafa asks him to do his thing, all of a sudden he's like "wait a minute... this is actually bad!". Ryan is so insecure and selfish that he is willing to engage in outrageous competition with his teenage nephew because a grown adult lacks a single ounce of maturity... and then they resolve the episode by appealing to his selfishness. Another cliche.

Every episode seems to end with a shallow message, such as stealing is bad, etc, but usually the message is about how they all love each other and looking out for your family. But the very next episode they are all acting so incredibly selfish, screwing each other over as if they are like 8 year olds playing mean pranks, and just generally lack any kind of maturity. These messages about family do not feel earned.

The rest of the show is fine, if cliche. Boy likes girl but is too dumb to know how to ask her out, but also incredibly smart and on track to be the first in his family to graduate college. It's not that great but it's watchable.

Overall I guess I shouldn't have expected another George Lopez or One Day At A Time, but I expected more than this. If this show gets a season two, I hope the show runners ditch some of the cliches and try to have the show be more of its own thing because the concept is not bad, it just feels like generic sitcom #82,493.

I wish there was more!
lalexmurillo20 May 2023
I started watching the first season of Primo because Im a fan of both Shea Serrano and Mike Schur. I finished it in 2 days because it is so fun and funny.

Great characters and lots of jokes, all centered on a family you just want to keep getting to know, what more could you want? I kept changing my mind on which was my favorite uncle, they're all funny and also all sort of remind you of people you know. This is all a testament to the writing and the casting of the show, which is top notch.

My only complaint is I wanted more episodes! The first season delivers 8 episodes, which definitely leaves you wanting more.

If you are a fan of family comedies I can't recommend it highly enough! Go check it out!

Another slam dunk series
joejjeffersonjr19 May 2023
If you are a fan of The Office, Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine or The Good Place, the executive producer has created another series that has the same humor mixed with heart.

Focusing on the life of a Teenager who's five Uncles make up the blueprint of what it means to be a man this coming of age story is something that keeps you laughing and thinking about life.

It's got the classic cutaways that made the aforementioned mentioned shows classic. The young lead somehow reminds me of Tom Holland he's got great timing and presence.

Millennials will recognize the female lead from her early days on Nickelodeon.

Each of the uncles are crazy and zany in their own ways but ultimately try to teach their "Primo" about what life means and how to navigate it.

Definitely recommend watching and hopefully we get a few seasons out of it.

Sooo over rated. This has all been done before, many times
haug-806141 July 2023
Beware of the ridiculously high ratings. Because this is a cultural show I guess it gets special ratings, but it's just the same old same old. Fake college degrees in the mail, wow that is original. Old story lines that were done in the 70's? Seriously, this has all been done before many times. I mean it's not a terrible show but it's just so overly rated. It does have its moments, and yes, the characters and the acting is fine, but the whole storyline is just average humor. To put this at the same level as Star wars or Indiana Jones is an absolute joke. Just cheap humor. These shows are being pumped out to the point that they're literally a dime a dozen. I love the fact that the 23 actual reviews are virtually all 10. Yeah, right.

Super cute!!! Just what we needed
leevanzant20 May 2023
This series is really cute. It's a feel-good wholesome series with lots of unexpected funny one liners and tons of relatable moments. The mom is hilarious!!! I love her!

I read that it's the same creators of Parks & Rec, and The Good Place so it has those easy, familiar, happy family vibes. Especially funny if you're from South Texas! The show allows for each character to shine but not over power one another which is nice. Some characters are silly and easy to laugh alongside with. Drea is a favorite. She's sassy and quick and her lines make me laugh out loud when I'm not expecting it.

Definitely add to your watch list!

Secret Email Club wins again
droppinmonkeys22 May 2023
I have been following Shea Serrano for a few years now on twitter, have a couple of his books so I was so pumped to hear he was bringing his gift to my tv screen, also netw3rk / jason concepcion (who also had his own jeopardy category not that long ago) worked on this too which got me even more excited. They absolutely hit it out of the park, it was super funny and heartwarming.

Each episode changed which of the 5 uncles was my favorite, in the end, I have to say its Rollie for obvious reasons but Jay and his money coats is a super strong contender. But Mike is super funny too, the sunglasses on the back of his head was the perfect little quirk. Mondo just vibing all the time and his overall presence reminding me of one of my own uncles and Ryan having his own mini graduation was great too. Their sister and Rafas mom Drea is like the best mom in the world and all of Rafas friends are great, Harris is super funny, such great comedic timing just like Rafa.

Its hilarious and has some of the best cutaways I have ever seen in a show. Go watch it and buy a shea serrano book you wont regret it.

Funny & heartwarming
kristiancarlson22 May 2023
Great show about a family making it work amongst a cast of characters that each have their own unique stories and attributes.

The struggle is real for the main character Primo, a teenager growing up in surburban Texas. The young Ignacio Diaz-Silverio plays the role of Primo as a typically insecure high schooler trying to figure out his future, manage his crazy family, and maybe get the girl! He is definitely the straight man but definitely gets jokes in with excellent comedic timing.

The family dynamic is where the show shines, as his 5 Uncles offer their own wacky advice for what he should do with himself. My favorite of his uncles is a hilarious stonerish hippy gliding through the universe.

The heart of the movie is his Mom that holds the family together that all the uncles make sure they are taking care of her when really it's the other way around.

Of course this all comes from the mind of Shea Serrano and his life story overlaps into the characters. The sly jokes and pop culture references keep you focused on the dialogue as the quirky characters make their way through hilarious family adventures mixed in with pull at your heart string moments of sweetness.

Super Sweet
heidi-1918 July 2023
At the risk of sounding cliché, the show is heartfelt + hilarious with the right amount of edginess. I love every member of the cast, and it makes me wish I had five brothers. The mom is amazing and Rafa/Primo is one lucky kid. I'm so grateful to be able to watch a show with positive role models, even if they aren't perfect. The characters are distinct personalities, which adds to the humor, The plot lines were clever and wrapped up nicely in eight episodes (although a longer season would have been welcome). My favorite episode was the one about the family picnic. I hope this show comes back for a few more seasons.

Great Show. Funny and Charming.
mcfulton522 May 2023
I am only 6 episodes in, but I just had a dream about Rollie trying to teach Harris to pee on a rabbit for good luck. So the show clearly has a lasting impact on its viewers.

I am disappointed that Miguel stole a candy bar and not a burrito from the store. I would like to see a Burrito Bandit episode in Season 2 based on Jason Conception's life. Based on this, I would give it a 9.8/10, but I will round up to 10/10.

My favourite characters are Drea, Primo, Jay and Harris. Please bring the show to Canadian streaming services or cable providers so that I don't have to pay for a monthly VPN service just to watch Primo.

Such a sweet show - I want more!
tpatterson-7164226 May 2023
This show is just perfect. The actors are wonderful - the core family feels like a family, and wow, the casting directors hit an absolute home run with the actor who plays Rafa. He is so funny and believable as a teenager who's sometimes awkward, sometimes charming, and sometimes confused. It literally does not feel like anyone in this show is acting; it's amazing. Ditto for the writing - the dialogue doesn't feel forced and all of the plotlines feel natural. I love Great first season that's guaranteed to make you smile! I hope this series is renewed; I'll be telling everyone I know to watch it.

Magical, Wonderful, I'm Crying
johnnadams-9672725 May 2023
Combining Shea Serrano and Shea Serrano is like pairing peanut butter and chocolate. It was guaranteed to work from the start. This series is wholesome and hilarious. It has the relatable family chaos of Malcolm in the Middle and the kind hearted nature of Parks & Rec. The characters have stellar chemistry from the jump. I found a couple of the uncles - there's 5 of them, true to Serrano's life - a little obnoxious at first, but I adored them all by the end. Each episode is better than the one before it. You'll want to re-watch it immediately. I need for Amazon to renew Primo for a 25 episode season IMMEDIATELY.

thank you Shea for putting more latinx families on tv!
jeanieweber3526 May 2023
A super relatable show for anyone who grew up in the states with a big Latinx family that was always up in your business. If only I had had 7 funny, supportive, goofy tios... instead I just got the one super sexist tio who, when I was 16, called me a descarada for wearing a short skirt. (Luckily I did have the most amazing tia instead). This show is a love letter to the family that drives you crazy but also is a huge part of who you are. (It's also a love letter to Larami, and I quite literally cannot get over how cute it is... Shea might be one of the only actually decent wife guys). Please give me as many seasons as Shea wants to write, its what we deserve after 11 seasons of Modern Family.

A Great Call Back To Sitcoms Like Family Ties and Roseanne.
talkteav20 May 2023
Primo is a great comedy series where no matter the age, all the characters are given room to grow. Watching each member of the Gonzales family approach life's thresholds open-mindedly to improve themselves was inspirational.

Ignacio Diaz-Silvario makes the most confusing, painfully funny expressions, and with every cringe-worthy mistake, I found myself laughing, wincing, and watching the television side-eyed.

Christina Vidal sets an inviting, fun-loving uplifting mood with her performance as the matriarch of the family. The uncles, Rollie, Mike, Ryan, Jay, and Mondo, are the kind of relatives viewers will quickly identify within their own family. The cast, writers, and showrunners perfectly utilize the adult characters and their behavior to create a funny, relatable journey for Rafa.

And now I'm wondering if I should be stashing money in my winter coats.

Thanks for making it this far, and if you watch this series, comment below, and let me know your thoughts.

Keep It Interesting and Stay Channel Surfing

Genuinely great show
mtownsend-6689830 May 2023
This show made me actually laugh out loud so many times that I couldn't keep track. Heartwarming and funny, the only bad thing I could say about it is that it only has 8 episodes. Binged them all in one day, and now I'm sitting here wishing I had more seasons to go through. So many shows follow similar scripts so you can make a decent guess as to what's going to happen in X amount of minutes. Primo does not do that. The uncles are all so different and offer so much spontaneous laughter while Rafa keeps you grounded throughout.

Seriously, just watch it and know that you'll smile for 8 straight episodes. Impatiently awaiting Season 2 now.

Humor + Heart - a rare combination
Primo is a delightful comedy that shows the beauty of family, even when that family is chaotic. The characters are recognizable to anyone with a big family. I binged it over a weekend and wanted more! I so hope there are more seasons. Shea Serrano has given us a peek into the joys and struggles of growing up and dealing with frequently conflicting advice from so many directions. The relationship between the mom and the son is loving and supportive. The uncles are each unique in their own way and have Primo's best interests at heart, even if their advice is sometimes off-base. The relationships between the uncles is laugh-out-loud funny, and their love for their sister and their nephew is at the core of everything they do. Don't miss this one.

Amazing Show
alvadriana25 May 2023
This was such a feel good show to watch. There's no heavy angst so it's perfect to watch when you're looking for something funny and light. I loved the characters and the plots and I'm so sad it only had eight episodes. I need more! It's funny that the uncles were such a huge part of the show but it still felt like we didn't get enough of them ha. Coming from a Latino household myself, the representation of the relationships between Primo's mom and uncles was hilariously accurate. This show is definitely one that I could watch more seasons of. The actors were all absolutely great and it's so refreshing to see.

Great Freshman Show from Shea Serrano
ekostidakis6 June 2023
I have long been a fan of Shea, and I was so excited when he announced a show! I think for a first show this touches on great family dynamics that most people don't understand. Primo also had light hearted humor that didn't feel forced or cheesy! All five uncles crack me up and I love the relationship between them and Rafa, as well as all the boys with Drea. The comedic timing is on point, and the show is extremely comforting as well. I recommend this as an easy to watch binge show and you will definitely enjoy it. The cast is amazing and Shea is truly talented as well as the other people who worked on the show! Can't wait for another season!

Great authentic show
samohtbackwards5 June 2023
Really funny, characters quickly feel like family, and authentic San Antonio culture. It's very easy to binge the whole series. I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. You can tell the writers put a lot of effort into keeping the series light hearted, believable, and hilarious. The dialogue is top notch with very few slow spots. If you've lived in San Antonio for any amount of time you quickly recognize friends, coworkers, and family displayed by Rafa and his family. I appreciate how Rafa's family is not perfect, but they mean well and they try hard. If you give this series a chance you won't be disappointed.
