Good Documentary
susan-3248922 February 2022
Follows two young adults, one who is gay and the other is transgender.

Focuses on the mums of the two and their experiences with PFLAG Korea.

A mix of inspiring stories, with plenty of sadness too. (I cried a couple of times.) The scene with anti-queer protesters was intense and upsetting. Fathers were noticeably absent from the narrative, but in the closing credits it was nice to see some supportive dads too.

Touching & Timely

Warning: Spoilers
This documentary is a moving, honest portrayal of two queer people and their mothers' lives. While I was hesitant at first to view a film centered around the mothers of queer people, the documentary fully supported queer people in their struggles. It did not excuse the mothers' past shortcomings, but also allowed space for growth and forgiveness. The mothers' activism for queer rights is made even more impactful considering the places they came from. Their journeys give me hope that more Korean parents will learn to not only accept but fight for their queer children.

The film itself is a quiet, ordinary affair. It does not shy away from the difficulties of mental illness queer people often face. However, it makes room for levity and highlights the genuine love and laughter shared between the mothers and their children.

I had the privilege of viewing a screening of the film accompanied by a live Q&A with the director and cast, and while my Korean isn't very good, it was still wonderful and lovely to see the cast eloquently express their stories and their hopes for a better future for queer people in Korea. I'm looking forward to the director's next documentary about a trans woman coming out next year!
