Another great episode

Warning: Spoilers
I said in my last review that I was glad the series was finally going somewhere, and this episode does not disappoint.

Capua is in drought and the town is going mad, so the head honcho decides to hold a games to appease the gods.

Crixus and surprisingly Spartacus are chosen to fight the primus provided by Batiatus' arch enemy Selonius.

The shadow of death is a legend never fallen, never beaten, and only one man has ever lived following a match, Doctore.

Paired together you can feel the intensity between Crixus and Spartacus, and of course they cannot fight together.

This is the first time we see Crixus as doubting and even scared, Spartacus as is his usual self doesn't get it.

Meanwhile Lucretia is examined by the High priestess of Juno's temple about childbearing. She is given a potion and told she must copulate within the hour. Batiatus being away she calls on Crixus, but he advises that sex makes him week for the tournament so she leaves him aware that her chance has disappeared.

Batiatus' men have tracked down a slave dealer who confesses the name of the person who hired him to kill Batiatus. We later see Batiatus in a house surrounded by dead bodies of the family that he has had killed. The merchant to whom he owns a debt confesses the it was Selonius that wanted Batiatus killed. The Syrian kills him and is then ordered to do something far worse.

Back at the games it appears that Crixus and Spartacus have won easily as a team, however everything is not quite so simple.........

The episode deals with love, loss, honour, and an understanding of Crixus and why he hates Spartacus. It also deals with the Roman practice of buying debts and plotting.

It is probably the first time I felt some real character development in the series save the last episode, and it nicely changes your view of some of the character.

The vapid legatus' wife however is just the same as she has always been :)

One of the greatest episodes of one of the greatest shows ever

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is so Epic. I have watched this season about 6 times and the end scene STILL gives me chills every time. The Legend of Spartacus truly begins at that moment. I don't really understand why a review has to be 10 lines of text. Also, with this, I also find it near impossible to write a review that is 10 lines long about 1 episode, yet without writing a spoiler... Maybe I just don't read enough of these reviews to know what the correct way to write one. This is my first review I have written and most definitely my last. However, I feel like my time is worth it to tell you that this is an amazing show, and this episode is one of my all time favorites.

Good entertainment, intriguing teamwork, boomerang story but too many arcs, emotional and surreal ending
igoatabase22 February 2010
What's in the shadow of the giant ? It could have been a Saiyan if Shadow Games was a Dragon Ball Kai episode. Training, humiliation and redemption. It seems Spartacles was ready for his first Labour. Slay the beast. Win the crowd. Make Batiatus rich. Earn your freedom. Get Sura. But things aren't that simple in a wasteland where anyone would sell its own child for a drop of water. Teaming up with Crixus instantly sounded like madness. However arcs developed in the past episodes came back like boomerangs to nourish the story. Until the very end I didn't know what would happen. Indeed like puppet masters the writers played with our mind. How can you predict anything when you can't even trust a writer ? That's how much this show is corrupted.

Seriously even if the finale fight wasn't as awesome as I hoped it would be, it was still good entertainment. The events were twisted and the ambiance surreal enough to make me believe in miracles. But like in alchemy, life has its way of balancing itself. Is it the beginning of the end ? As for the usual arcs I think they tried to juggle with far too many. Batiatus revenge. Lucretia and Ilithyia's friendship with benefits. Crixus in love. I think they should have focused on the relationship between Spartacus and Crixus. So the idea had potential but I didn't like how it was executed. It doesn't mean it was disappointing, just different from what I had in mind.

To sum things up my opinion is mixed. Was it surprising ? Definitely. Is it a must see ? Of course ! But it'll remain in the shadow of past episodes. However I have to admit that the end was ambivalent enough to make me uncomfortable. It's quite smart because I really don't expect naive happy endings from the show.
