Fairly average prison movie...
paul_haakonsen29 December 2015
While "Wrath of Cain" (aka "Caged Animal") is not the best of prison movies, it should be stated that there are far worse prison movies out there.

Story-wise then director Ryan Combs didn't really manage to procure a particularly outstanding story. The storyline is quite straight forward, running on autopilot most of the time. There was a single surprise towards the ending of the movie, but other than that it was linear and scripted.

Now, I can't claim to be particularly familiar with life in prison, the code of conduct in prisons or the lingo used, but as a movie, "Wrath of Cain" was entertaining enough for what it turned out to be.

Ving Rhames seemed to be running on autopilot throughout the movie, and I think he didn't really put in all that he could have. But in overall, the performances in the movie were adequate all-round given the genre.

Not an outstanding movie by any milestone, but it is still entertaining enough for a single viewing, just don't get your hopes up too high. If you enjoy prison movies you might get something out of "Wrath of Cain".

LIFE IS ABOUT CHOICES
nogodnomasters14 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This is apparently based on a true story. Cain (Ving Rhames) is in prison. He remembers the incident when his wife was killed in a cross fire with Redfoot, who has now come to the same prison. There are scenes of 2 rival gangs dealing drugs, Cain's son is one of them and he ends up in the same prison. Cain's son doesn't want anything to do with his father who is now participating in a mentoring program for would-be criminals.

The movie is preachy, but the message is weak. Ving Rhames wasn't given an opportunity to display his full acting talents. Robert Patrick made a terrible warden. If the film is supposed to inspire young people to go straight, I believe it has missed its mark and might work as well as "Reefer Madness" did to end marijuana usage.

F-bomb, N-word, brief sex, nudity, fighting, killing, off camera male rape

Nice

This is not a real review, it should be understood more as a collection of impressions on the film.

From my point of view there are many very good films about prison life that dissect the criminal world in a very beautiful and organic way, it's a shame that this film doesn't fit the description, placing itself in a group of entertaining and well-made films but without ever surpassing this barrier to becoming something more. So for me this film far deserves a pass but it doesn't particularly deviate from the six and that's it. In conclusion, if you like this type of film then it is a good film, but I don't recommend it to anyone who doesn't like this type of film.

Right message wrong direction.

I could spend forever pointing out what is wrong with this film but you have to put it into perspective. This is a low budget straight to DVD movie , starring a couple of C list actors who's careers have seen better days and because of that my expectations weren't to high! The story is a typical prison drama one . The acting is poor and the direction is worse but it wasn't totally unwatchable. I didn't care what happened to the characters as they were all pretty much a bunch of animals , despite that , the message sent is the right one despite the sickly religious undertones. Unless your a Ving Rhames fan or your a fan of naff B movies i would suggest you steer well clear of The Wrath of Cain.

Prison movie is a real bore
Leofwine_draca26 September 2016
WRATH OF CAIN is a low budget prison outing for PULP FICTION star Ving Rhames. I think it's fair to say that he's going through the motions in this film which is entirely cheap and disappointing, not even convincing when it comes to staging typical life in a prison. Rhames is a hulking convict who is sent down and gets embroiled in prison politics where there's always a beating or violent attack just around the corner.

The script is clichéd and derivative and the filming style fails to make the cheapness turn into something halfway convincing. Rhames is on autopilot and those familiar actors who do show up in support like Robert Patrick and Robert LaSardo feel similarly uninvolved in things. I didn't care much for the lazy hip hop soundtrack either or the general way in which the producers are content to emulate greater films than offer something genuinely new. WRATH OF CAIN is a real bore.

Welcome to prison.
mark.waltz6 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Easily forgettable movie, filled with every cliche in the book, a ton of violence that doesn't do anything but perpetuate the stereotype that men in prison belong there, that they are indeed caged animals who deserve the circumstances of their life, and that there's no such thing as rehabilitation in prison. I had more hope for the real life prisoners of "Lock Up" and other similar docudramas than I had interest in these characters, major parts played by Ving Rhames and Robert Lasardo, decent actors I knew from better films, playing bitter enemies stuck together behind bars.

If there's a message meant to be felt in this film, why the exploitive nature of several graphic sex scenes and tons of excessive cursing? Obviously there to entice people to watch, in spite of the fact that it deals with Rhames doing his best to keep his son, brought into prison on serious charges, out of trouble and guide him to make changes on his release. It's a sordid film made by sordid minds, ugly in nature and certainly not entertaining. The acting is bland, with Rhames seeming to be walking through many of his scenes barely awake. Not one character worth caring about even to waste 84 minutes of your time on.

Another bad prison movie
shel_bug6614 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I get it, it's a prison movie. Honestly, I'm more put out by the prison inaccuracies than the actual story line. Another gross misrepresentation of the California prison system. It's like they didn't care whatsoever about any detail. What and where is Combs State Prison in Ca? Why would your intake photo say "Combs state prison" with "police dept" under it? They never actually say it's a Ca prison but in the following scene, a mall cop wearing a sloppy blue uniform with a CDCR patch on one sleeve??, drives into a sally port in a Sheriff's van with a state prison/police department inmate?? At this time we are pretending the convict already spent 6-10 months in a county jail receiving his due rewards. If it wasn't for all of the mall cops wearing a CDCR patch on their nasty blue shirts, there would be no other indications during this movie that it was set in a Ca prison mind you. So in the Sally port, there is a guard on a catwalk with a slung M4??? Raise your hand if you have ever seen a Ca prison cop with an Ar/m4 style rifle outside of a CRT or SERT for the really salty dogs. Never gunna happen! Mini 14 is the only deadly force option you will find inside. Maybe a .38 in certain areas back in 2010 when this was filmed. Then you have guards taking bribes like it's part of the job. Placing an un-restrained inmate with a 12 inch knife inside an apparent holding cell with a fully restrained and chained inmate, closing the door and walking away? Again, remove the CDCR patches and you have your own fairytale land to work with and just another bad prison movie but use just one thing that indicates a legitimate state prison affiliation, and you just put that agency on blast. I can't believe it was allowed. I can't believe I watched the entire movie. I can't believe Ving Rhames starred in it.

Enjoyable 90 minutes, if you take it for what it is.
wbafanclub125 September 2010
I'm certain that if a reviewer was to put in a little bit of research they would be easily able to slate this film. I myself was surprised at the end of the film to be told that this was based on a true story as at times the plot did seem a bit far fetched.

Do not let this detract from the entertainment factor of the film however. I personally enjoy prison films and for me this is one of the better ones. The acting was credible on the whole, although the fight scenes (few that there are) did look a bit staged. The storyline was enough to keep the viewer interested although at times it did jump back and forwards without making it clear that it was doing so. There are a few moral and religious undertones throughout the film which I personally found to be a positive for the film.

A decent prison flick.

The message is clear
BArmstrong193617 November 2010
I am a public defender for Clark County Las Vegas. I grew up in Bank Head, Atlanta. I was blown away by this film. Not only could I relate to this movie, I watch this story in real life everyday. Generations of men, fathers and sons in the same prison. I wish everyone of them could see this film. Because it was so accurate, I decided to do some research on the film maker Ryan Combs. After reading his bio I understood why this movie was right on point. I had my 18 year old son watch it and he found it just as entertaining. I don't think I've seen to many contemporary films that are this real.

Ving Rhames is one of my all time favorite actors and he never let's me down, and with this film he remains at the top of my list. I don't normally write reviews for movies, but I was so moved by this one, I felt obligated.

It has it's moments
kristopher-m-gordon17 February 2013
This film did have potential to be a underground hit, but the direction was missing. Wasn't Ving Rhames best work, but at the same time he wasn't working with the most talented actors. I watched the film to see Nipsey Hussle's work, but was blow away by the plot. Great plot, just wasn't directed right. But the movie is not awful and is watchable a couple of times. it has well meaning message and if you are into prison flicks, this fulfill your needs. I give it a B-! The ending was kind of wack, and lazy. Hopefully it was because of a poor budget Like i said before, don't expect any Oscar winning performances, but it is a good flick to watch. Also, I think the score of the movie could have been better when you have two great rappers in Nipsey Hussle and Gillie the Kid!
