A Quirky Little Film
gavin69421 October 2013
Two years ago, the Mugg Brothers, who have never worked a day in their lives, inherited a brownstone apartment building. In that short time, their slacker ways have run the building into the ground. Tenants are moving out, no one drinks at the bar downstairs, and the building's pets are going missing.

The big draw for this film is, of course, Robert Englund. While he is not a main character, his role is sizable and in my opinion more enjoyable than most of the lower budget horror films he has been in over the last decade. Any Englund fans should be sure to check him out in this one.

For me, personally, the Chicago filming caught my attention. While I live three hours away, this film got plenty of buzz at the conventions and horror events, with John LaFlamboy promoting it at Flashback Weekend (among other places). I had wanted to see it for some time... and now (October 2013) I have.

Definitely a lot of fun, much more comedy than horror. It has "low budget" and "independent" written all over it, but not in a bad way. I would strongly urge people to give this one a try.

Most amusing

A delightful silly about two slacker bros who inherit an apartment building in Chicago; think It Never Rains in Philadelphia type of environment, glory holes and all. When the tenants' pets show up dead it becomes painfully obvious that there's a moleman in that thar basement. They finally take hilarious action.

Warning: Spoilers
i was expecting this to be rubbish,i was wrong. this film deserves more recognition . a good solid comedy that reminded me of joes apartment.two slackers end up running a block of apartments in a run down part of town.except there's a problem with the moleman in the basement.full of quirky characters and an appearance from robert englund make this an indie gem.with billions spent on pap by Hollywood its good to know that people still make movies for the love n laughs and not just big bucks .go watch, enjoy.its best to watch with a few beers and sum mates with a sense of humour.if it wasn't for films like this id have given up on films years ago ,so thanks to the makers of this movie hope you make many more.

Not bad for a starter film

Warning: Spoilers
If this had been a bigger budgeted film written by people that weren't new to the whole directing gig, I may have been harsher in my review. There are elements to this film that really could have been done better. The humor isn't bad and the plot is overall decent, but it really could have been tightened here and there to make a more slick performance. Many of the big name stars in this film are kind of underused- Englund is the best example of this and I really wanted him to factor into the movie more than he did. The somewhat romance between Marion and the bartender could probably have been tossed out- that didn't really do much for me as a whole and it's one of the bits that just felt a bit forced. There's also the problem that you can see much of the film coming, particularly the film's end revelation that there was more than one mole man.

That said, this film is a pretty fun schlock fest and very impressive for the directors' first feature length film. They dealt well with the budget issues as far as the mole man goes. The dark shooting was annoying, but it did explain why we never got a clear shot of the monster until the end. The directors do try to explain things for the most part, which I appreciated. It also doesn't hurt that the two main characters are at least somewhat likable, so they have that going for them.

I watched the film via Netflix and while I probably wouldn't buy this, I am planning to watch this again with my friends later on while drinking a few beers. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone wanting a good goofy movie- if you want anything serious or scary, then this isn't the film for you. The horror aspect of this isn't the main gist of the film and this is better appreciated by people who like schlocky 80s/90s horror films.

Hilarious Comedy/Horror

Warning: Spoilers
It's a pleasure to watch a US film that isn't annoying, glitzy, phony, overdone, pretentious, etc... for a change. Just on that basis alone, the film deserves a watch. The high point for me came when one of our 'heroes' kissed the girl, as he was about to risk his life to hunt down the mole man, and rather than melt in his arms, she tells him she's not interested in him, and is going with someone else. Then she calls him back, and rather than changing her mind, asks him if she should call the police, like any normal person would do in a situation like this. It's that type of sense of humor that makes this movie a total pisser. Let's hope these guys make other films like this that are just honest, funny films, and don't sell out to the demographic driven losers of Hollywood.

This is what every Tubi junker wants to be.

Here's a real gem of a movie. Comedy horror done by the experts, with actual jokes being told and skits being performed. A great and catchy theme song, a well done monster costume and some shining acting tops off what makes it so special.

The premise of two slackers running a slum apartment allow a cast of colorful characters to inhabit the building and share screen time as the titular moleman snatches up their pets. The goofy premise allowed plenty of room for the main characters to find themselves in awkward but hilarious situations trying to appease their tenants, save the animals, and stop the threat.

This movie is what happens when comedians are allowed to be funny in a film without to much money and staff getting in the way. It's what ever awful hot comedy on Tubi wants to be.. but can't.

What Masterpiece did I just watch ?
cryptodad15 August 2021
There's no sense trying to make sense of The Moleman of Belmont Avenue. It is a masterpiece of the genre it is in. Just don't know really what the genre is. I found myself laughing out loud at things no one should laugh at. The brothers are believable brothers (had to check if they really were brothers) and funny as brothers are. The bizarre tenets were bizarre. If your tired of the BS hero movies full of multimillion dollar stars, gore, and computer junk, and we should be, then relax with this low budget gem of movie fun.

Deserves Much higher rating! Epic comedy horror!!!
galactawit-826-41296824 October 2013
I put this film in the same category as Tucker and Dale Vs Evil. Comedy movies are hard enough to make as it is, but making comedy horror flick of this magnitude with their budget and pulling it off as they did is nothing short of spectacular. I just saw this movie on Netflix alone, by myself, in my cold/dilapidated/ water-damaged basement and was laughing from beginning to end. How could you not? Two slacker brothers barely keeping their deceased mother's apartment building running by cutting every corner they possibly could and then on top of that a hungry mole-man that is eating the tenant's pets...?!? WHAT DO WE DO!? Screw this! Let's go to the bar, do some whiskey shots, then go watch this movie! Although I watched it alone, this flick would be much much better with drinks and friends. I give this 10 outa 10 super spades... ;)
