With his victory on Monday at the Critics’ Circle Theatre awards, Andrew Scott has made history. The Irish performer, recognized as best actor for his one-man West End show, “Vanya,” previously was named best actor at the 2024 Critics’ Circle Film Awards for his performance in “All of Us Strangers.” He’s the first person to win lead actor Critics’ Circle prizes in both film and television in the same year.
“It’s a thrilling delight,” Scott says. “I’ve been involved with both film and theater ever since I started acting when I was 17 years old. I’ve always worked between the two mediums. So to have these two projects, which were very dear to me, be recognized is more than I could have wished for.”
In the case of “Vanya,” Simon Stephens’ adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya,” Scott played all of the show’s eight roles. That was a herculean task,...

Taron Egerton says that although he believes his body type means he’s “not the right choice” to play James Bond, actors regardless of their sexuality should be allowed to play gay.
The Golden Globe winner and Kingsman actor opened up about his stances on both topics during a recent interview with The Telegraph as part of the promotional for his new film Tetris. Yet much of the discussion focused on his projects beyond the Apple Original Film about the little-known Cold War battle behind one of the world’s most popular video games, including his award-winning portrayal of Elton John in Rocketman and his West End stint opposite Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey in Cock.
While confirming that he “wouldn’t change [Rocketman],” despite differing box office performances between his film and Bohemian Rhapsody — released in certain international countries after making cuts around Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury’s relationships...

Jonathan Bailey is in talks to join the cast of Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked” movies.
The “Bridgerton” star will play Fiyero in the two-part feature adaptation headlined by Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. The Universal Pictures films are set for release on Christmas in 2024 and 2025.
“Wicked” is a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz,” telling the story of how Elphaba became the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch.
“We decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one ‘Wicked’ movie but two!” Chu wrote in a statement when announcing the two-parter. “With more space, we can tell the story of ‘Wicked’ as it was meant to be told while bringing even more depth and surprise to the journeys for these beloved characters.”
Stephen Schwartz, who penned the music and lyrics to the original Broadway show, is adapting the “Wicked” screenplay with Winnie Holzman.

Taron Egerton knows about fame — especially after the attention he received for his award-winning work as Elton John in 2019’s “Rocketman.” But Egerton never felt as popular as he did on July 23 when Britney Spears posted videos on her Instagram of them together in London.
“I felt very, very, very famous for a second,” Egerton tells me on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast, crediting her “passionate fans” for all the love and attention.
“I love Britney,” he says.
The Instagram video — which Spears captioned, “Coolest guy ever!!! Such a freaking fan!” — was taken at a mutual friend’s dinner party. “She was very, very, very lovely,” the actor reports, explaining he’s been a fan of the pop star since her early days. “I was exactly the right age to have been swept up in all that mania,” he says, adding, “She’s a force.”

Taron Egerton has contracted Covid and will not perform this week in his London play Cock.
The infection is the second bad break for Egerton on this gig. He missed most of the opening-night performance of the play earlier this month when he collapsed on stage.
The show’s producers confirmed the Covid news in a statement posted Wednesday to Instagram. “Taron Egerton has unfortunately tested positive for Covid,” the statement says. “In accordance with the production’s health & safety protocols, he will now isolate and we expect Taron to return to the show next week.”
Egerton’s character, M, will be played by understudy Joel Harper-Jackson, who also filled in for him on opening night.
Cock also stars Quadrophenia’s Phil Daniels and Jade Anouka, best known for her role in the BBC adaptation of His Dark Materials. Written by Mike Bartlett, the play is about a man who...

2022 is off to a great start for 34 year-old British stage and TV star Jonathan Bailey. We've had to love him on the relative quiet for a long time because he rarely does movies! Promo photos just came out for the new West End play "Cock" in which he'll co-star with Taron Egerton as gay lovers having a fallout when one of them sleeps with a woman (Jade Anouka). In addition to that upcoming run on the boards, the Season 2 trailer for Bridgerton just dropped. This season he takes the leading spotlight as the most eligible bachelor of the titular family... ...
