At Variety’s 10 Producers to Watch panel, held March 31 at the Sun Valley Film Festival, the first order of business was defining what it means to be a producer, a title — and a role — that encapsulates a number of responsibilities on a film.
“The way that I describe it is you’ve got to know a little bit about a lot of things in filmmaking,” said Rachael Fung, whose film “Fremont” later won best narrative film in the festival’s One in a Million category, recognizing features made for less than $1 million. “You’ve got to be able to understand and talk to every single person that touches the film at every single stage. And also it’s about finding those directors and filmmakers and understanding their vision and figuring out the best way to get that to screen.”
“There are practical things like getting money for the movie, casting,...

Shout! Studios presents The Magic Flute by Florian Zigl, executive produced by Roland Emmerich, at 325 theaters with expansion likely. A reimagining of the Mozart opera, it follows a present-day teen sent from London to the Austrian Alps on singing scholarship at the legendary Mozart boarding school. There, he discovers a century old forgotten passageway into the magical world of Mozart’s famed opera.
This Harry Potter-ish adventure fantasy stars Jack Wolfe as Tim Walker, who passes from school into the world of the opera and its many adventures as hero Prince Tamino. Wide releases may be picking up steam and Scream, but in terms of new specialty, and family fare, these isn’t much new competition this weekend.
Melissa Boag, EVP of Family Entertainment at Shout! Studios, hopes it will play with fans of magical adventure, Harry Potter, and classical music. Wolfe is a star of Netflix YA series Shadow & Bone.

The idea that following your dream will lead to a happier and healthier life isn't just fluff. Research has found that people who pursue their passion experience lower stress levels and are happier overall. That's good news for Dominican comedian and actress Sasha Merci Medina, who has been living her life based on this principle ever since she decided to take her first stab at comedy.
Medina, 33 who was born and raised in the Bronx, started performing in 2016 at open mics and standup shows. But she really started making a name for herself when she began posting comedy clips to her Instagram account, @sashamerci, after the social media platform added the video feature.
Shortly after building a decent following, Medina started landing everything from standup gigs to bona-fide acting roles, including one in 2016's "Honorable Mike" and in the 2019 indie film "De Lo Mio." In "De Lo Mio," she played...

“Righteous Thieves” ends with its protagonists having a wee festival of self-congratulation, sipping champagne as they promise themselves — and perhaps threaten viewers — they’ll have more adventures like the one that’s just wrapped. Their delight is not infectious, because this dopey caper’s prior 90 minutes have been rather like hoisting a flute of promised champers only to taste flat Fresca.
Director Anthony Nardolillo and writer Michael Corcoran’s film strikes a pose of sly ingeniousness throughout that is uncorroborated by any actual cleverness, surprise, wit, tension, thrills or much else you’d hope for in a high-end-heist tale. The “righteous” part — that our heroes are reclaiming artworks stolen by Nazis long ago — feels no less superficial than everything else in this uninspired genre piece. Lionsgate opens it in seven U.S. theatrical markets March 10, simultaneous with digital and on demand release.

"Con paciencia y calma se sube un burro a una palma," is a famous Dominican saying that translates to "With patience and calm, a donkey can climb a palm." The saying speaks to the resourcefulness of Dominicans. It's about making do with what you have and creating new opportunities for yourself when the opportunities aren't necessarily falling on your lap. If there's one Dominican in the biz who has built their career off creating opportunities for themselves, when the opportunities weren't coming, it's comedian, actress, and writer Sasha Merci Medina.
Six years ago, Medina, who was born and raised in the Bronx, took her first stab at comedy. In 2016, she started off performing at open mics and doing standup. But when the opportunities weren't knocking on her door, Medina started posting comedy clips to her Ig @sashamerci after Instagram added the video feature to its platform. Before she knew it,...
