Quotes

  • Kahlan Amnell : [as Richard views the reflection of his scar in sword blade]  Does it hurt?

    Richard Cypher : It's nothing.

Kahlan Amnell : The spirit of the tyrant you killed comes back from the grave and burns the mark of the Keeper in your chest?

[her fingers glide over the scar and she shakes her head]

Kahlan Amnell : It's not nothing, Richard. I wish I knew what it meant.

Richard Cypher : [grabs her hand]  What we do know is we need to seal a rift between this world and the Underworld. And to do that, we need to find the Stone of Tears. And to find the Stone, we need to get to the Abbot of Ulrich.

  • [first lines]

Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander : [returning dagger]  Thanks for letting me borrow this, though I can't say it helped me sleep more soundly.

Kahlan Amnell : [as Cara tends her horse]  It's gonna take a while to get used to having a Mord-Sith in camp.

Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander : Well, if Richard trusts Cara, I suppose we'll have to learn to as well.

  • Richard Cypher : [arriving at ruins]  It must have burned at least three months ago. These weeds are at least that old.

Kahlan Amnell : D'Harans did this.

Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander : Then where are the corpses?

Cara Mason : If the abbot isn't here, then we have come a long way for nothing.

Richard Cypher : If D'Harans did this, and they didn't kill the monks, where would they have taken them?

Cara Mason : From here, they would have been taken to Tothrayne.

    Richard Cypher : What's Tothrayne?

Cara Mason : A death camp.

  • Kahlan Amnell : If these prisoners are going to gain their strength back, we're gonna have to feed them something more substantial than D'Haran gruel.

Cara Mason : [sarcastic]  Should we draw them warm baths as well?

Eleanor : [mother, with son, approaching]  Do you know of anyone heading in the direction of Deerfork?

Cara Mason : The Dragon Corps wiped out Deerfork months ago.

Eleanor : [clutching her son's shoulder]  But that's my father's village.

Kahlan Amnell : [compassionate]  We'll try to find out where the survivors have relocated.

Cara Mason : Deerfork was a resistance stronghold. No one would have been left alive.

Eleanor : But my father wasn't a resistance fighter. He was just a locksmith.

Cara Mason : That would have made no difference to the Dragon Corps.

[causing Kahlan to give her an admonishing look]

Eleanor : [whining]  Where will we go? The rest of my family died here.

Kahlan Amnell : I am... so sorry for your loss. But you need to be strong for your son. We'll see what we can find out about your father.

    [Eleanor sobs quietly]

Cara Mason : You shouldn't give her false hope.

Kahlan Amnell : [whirls]  It wasn't so long ago that you served the one who caused all this misery. At least try to show some compassion.

    [turns away, guides Eleanor]

Kahlan Amnell : Come with me.

    [Cara considers all this]

  • Cara Mason : [closing lid of crate]  I've seen him before. A man came to the stables asking for a horse so he could take his brother to be buried.

Richard Cypher : Apparently he took the treasure instead.

Kahlan Amnell : [to Cara]  And you believed his story?

Cara Mason : [to Richard, ignoring Kahlan]  The Confessor told me I had to show more compassion.

Kahlan Amnell : Are you saying this is my fault?

    Cara Mason : Yes.

Richard Cypher : [as the two young women glare at each other]  It doesn't matter whose fault it is. We need to find him.

  • Flynn : [carrying corpse]  I need a horse. I have to bury my brother.

Cara Mason : [sternly]  We need the horses to get provision. You can bury him outside with the others.

Flynn : I'm not burying my brother alongside the D'Harans who killed him. He should be laid to rest beside our mother and father.

Kahlan Amnell : [entering with man]  We're going to need fresh water.

Flynn : [to Cara]  My village is only a day's ride. I'll have the horse back to you in the morning.

Kahlan Amnell : [to the man]  Check the cistern.

Cara Mason : [to Flynn, harshly]  Do it quickly.

[then, remembering what Kahlan had advised her:]

Cara Mason : I'm so sorry for your loss.

[but with no compassion in her eyes]
