- After being introduced to Collier Strong, the lead make-up consultant for L'Oreal, the designers are assigned their challenge. They must create a character from a selection of movie genres: film noir, western, science fiction, auction-adventure, and time period.
- The boys notice that multiple beds are now empty. "Oh, Malvin," Ramon says to his departed buddy. "Oh, Johnny." The girls also note that the proceedings have become more serious. No time for worry now, though. Time to head to the runway. "Allo!" Heidi squeaks. She then explains that the next challenge has to do with "movie making." The contestants head to a real Hollywood sound stage and meet Tim. "You will select a film genre and invent a character who lives in that genre," he explains. Much gasping! Irina chooses film noir. Logan and Carol picks action-adventure. Ra'mon chooses science fiction because he claims to know all about "Star Wars," "Star Trek" and "everything in between." Louise and Althea opt for film noir. Gordana and Christopher goes right for period piece. That leaves Shirin and Epperson with Western.
Back at the workspace, the designers start sketching out their ideas. "It's a one-day challenge, which is CRAZY!" Althea tells the camera. Epperson struggles to find an "interesting look" for a female in a Western, as does Shirin. The latter eventually opts for a "saloon girl" instead of a cowgirl. Carol likes the "sexy assassin" idea -- as well as Logan, who is distracting in a nice way. "He's really hot!" Carol tells the camera. One shopping trip to Mood later, our sewing masters get to work. Gordana has chosen a look from the 1920s. Nicolas begins telling a strange story of alien queens as the basis of his sci-fi look. Ra'mon, dying fabric green, tells the camera about his "human-alien hybrid." Louise, meanwhile, doesn't have a story worked out. "I am really worried about her," Nicolas tells the camera. "You really need to know what your point of view is." Logan thinks it will all come down to "who interprets the challenge the best." You think, Mr. Hottie?
Tim enters. He is mucho impressed with Christopher's "vampire bride" outfit, but notes that bare arms aren't exactly 1800s. There are no complaints about Epperson's super-cool frontier gal, though. He is "seduced" by the ruffles, in particular. As for Ra'mon's alien-human look? "This could be sublime, or it could be a big, hot mess," Tim says. Louise's film-noir dress, meanwhile, is too minimal. "Take the DNA you have as a designer and push it!" Tim says. He also encourages Nicolas to exaggerate his evil white space queen a bit more.
Here come the models! They express much excitement over the film-centric outfits before heading to makeup. Everyone seems fairly pleased with their looks -- except for Ra'mon. "This is looking very Kermit the Frog gone wrong," he says. "Unfortunately, with two hours left, I have to start from scratch." But he has no choice. Goodbye Kermit. Once the models leave, the other contestants begin feeling the stress. Louise even cuts herself on the sewing machine. It will all be worth it if she finishes in the top three, though. Midnight arrives. Put down your needles, folks.
The next morning, the kids (and Gordana and Epperson) get up and rush back to the workroom. Things are positively frantic when Tim arrives with the models. "Work like there's no tomorrow because, for one of you, there won't be!" he says. No pressure. Gordana worries about accessories because that's a "huge part" of the 20s. Epperson, on the other hand, doesn't see any way that he's going home. He's just THAT good, according to Epperson. "The time has come!" Tim says. Runway time. "Allo!" Heidi squeaks. "As you know in fashion, one day you're in and the next day you're out" (we KNOW -- you say it every week!!! find a new phrase already!) The automaton host then introduces the judges: John Varvatos, Zoe Glassner and Oscar-nominated costume designer Arianne Phillips. Where is the orange princess, Michael Kors, and our beloved Nina Garcia?? The show begins. And wouldn't you know it? The designers LOVE their creations! One notable exception is Louise, who seems to know that her slinky black film-noir dress might be a tad on the safe side.
Heidi then calls the following names: Logan, Carol, Shirin, Irina and Althea. Those designers are SAFE. They leave the runway. "The remaining designers have the highest and lowest scores," Heidi recites. "One of you will be the winner and one of you will be out." Gordana steps up to the chopping block first. Arianne worries that the Flapper look just isn't as "memorable" as it could have been. Zoe doesn't feel like the outfit brings anything new to the runway. Nicolas, on the other hand, is praised by the entire panel for being so bold. Louise's decade-within-a-decade dress is a "snooze fest," according to Zoe. Heidi also wonders why Louise wasn't more innovative. Christopher's vampire queen not only has a fun story, but also has a "wow factor." "It's definitely worthy of being photographed for film," Arianne says. Ra'mon is next. His alien-human hybrid gets poor marks all around. "It looks to me a little like Swamp Thing," Zoe says. John says it looks "a little bit like a school project." Heidi calls it "a hot, green mess." Ouch. Finally, Epperson's rugged frontier look is deemed "great." "You can manage my farm anytime," John says to the model. Kinda creepy, but OK.
One judges confab later, Heidi explains the rules on the off chance that the designers and judges aren't aware of them. "One of you will be named the winner and one of you will be out," she says. Now that we understand how the game works, Heidi names Nicholas the winner. His ice queen "blew us away," she says. Nicolas is THRILLED. "I'm here to win this competition and nothing is going to stop me," he tells the camera. So who loses? It all comes down to Ra'mon and Louise.
Ramon is ... out. Louise is in.
She immediately begins to weep. He, on the other hand, keeps his cool. "I can leave with a smile on my face and a genuine one at that," he tells the camera. Adios, sweet dreadlocked prince.
