Simple Yet Perfect
njcalderon122 October 2023
To someone who is bilingual in Spanish and English this series was music to my ears. I really enjoyed De Niro lightly narrating in the beginning while most of the series was in Spanish. The Argentina language and culture came through so beautifully authentic and genuine. The verbiage used to describe the flavors were so poetic and romantic that it made the foodie in me, love food even more. This was so well written. It's a simple story yet had so much depth. I felt very connected with the character's passion and struggles. Luis Brandoni is definitely a very talented actor. I was really impressed with the acting. If you want a series that's easy to watch yet keeps you wanting to watch more, this one is really really good!

Engaging and charming

I am not a fan of "Curb your exuberance" . In fact I despise it. But this Argentinian show is very engrossing.

The scenery makes Buenos Aires feel like Paris of the seventies. Brandini, as a food critic who cannot get the motivation to finish a book he has received an advance on, is brilliant. DeNiro has cameo roles explaining, in English, some cultural terms. He does it in a simple, face to camera style. Lovely.

The acting is convincing and has a scent of Aldomavar about it. Like Bon-Bon El Perro. Gentle pace. Realistic feel.

The idea that over forty years, the house keeper had created a manual of cooking, cleaning and recipes was so sweet. The deceased voice reads the contents as Brandini tries to follow.

De Niro is the weakest link.

Warning: Spoilers
I think this is a beautiful little show EXCEPT for all the parts containing Robert De Niro - why is he in this?? I have to fast forward through every part he's in. The writing for him is very cringey. I'm not sure what the tone is supposed to be. I don't need him to vouch for the protagonist, I'm already on board. If I could get an edit without De Niro I'd be thrilled. He makes it seem like a sales pitch for Buenos Aires (which he also pronounces differently every time he says it??)

Otherwise it's fantastic, original and beautiful. I like the art, food, interiors. Just please, no more Robert De Niro.

What a Gem
katherinebcalendar17 October 2023
I found this series so curious I kept watching, no idea of where it was headed. Then before I knew it, I was swept into another world with people I cared about.

It ended too soon. I wanted more. Wanted to stay with their company. The lead actor and actress are superb. I loved the food attention. And the foreign setting and customs.

The series is quiet. You lean forward into it to not miss a trick. The main character is so attractive while being innocently cranky. Yes he's preposterous, but completely real and reasonable, to himself. And so to us.

I was completely charmed by De Niro. Never have seen him so honest.

Bravo. More please.

De Niro in Buenos Aires, the combination you didn't know you needed.
Roldijo12 October 2023
Probably the best Argentine mini-series ever. And I am not exaggerating. Extremely touching while still being funny, with a very simple story behind it, but extremely sophisticated. I am not surprised that the same people responsible for El Encargado, another wonderful series from the same country, are behind it.

The cast is led by an exceptionally talented veteran Argentine actor, Luis Brandoni, accompanied by a Paraguayan newcomer who brings just the right balance to the story. Not to mention, of course, the special participation of none other than Robert De Niro, in one of the most tender roles of his career. It is already rare to see an actor of his stature doing television, but to do it with total dedication, in a distant country and with the certainty of giving the best of himself.

Be sure to watch it.

"Nada" else but a masterpiece
msmetis16 January 2024
Something so simple and different but captivating and beautiful. If you are a person with an open heart you will have a very happy feeling of fulfillment while watching this mini-series with 2 master actors - Luis Brandoni & Robert De Niro! Mini-series starts "in medias res" and very fast you will be captivated with a strange but interesting "grandpa" figure which is not capable of taking care for himself without his maid. This life story is something else and different and doesn't contain that cliche scenes you often see in today's "fast screenplay" series which are result of a hyper production due to vast number of different streaming options. Most highly recommended!!!

When from nothing you have everything
roposapa16 October 2023
When the subtle and the sophisticated are in balance, the result is this series, which far from being complex and inorganic, stands out for the precision in detail that makes it beautiful, fun and stripped. The dialogues are exquisite as well as the silences and Luis Brandoni is all that is good, he is the Anton Ego from Rio de la Plata. Robert de Niro's participation aims to give the product a certain status, do you need it? No; does it make sense? Yes. He highlighted the duo of the protagonist and the Paraguayan employee, a very real encounter of two worlds that take the best of each other. Real that I am hungry for more, there are few times that you see on the screen the combination of a good script, excellent performance, beautiful photography and art, good shots ... The combination of ALL this and more, makes NOTHING a work of art where the pretentious and the simple merge creating a microclimate of which you are part in the 31' that lasts each episode. Directors Duprat and Cohn are a duo that has already been giving us good substance, with a sharp style that I intuit aims to become a cult.

De Niro and Brandoni togethers in Buenos Aires.
gsolima24 October 2023
I really enjoyed this series De Niro is amaizing, as newyorker narrating Buenos Aires culture, most of the series was in Spanish. The slang language and culture came through so beautifully authentic and genuine. The actors manage in an incredible way to make you feel, smell and desire. They archive to get us into the plot, making us happy, ridiculing us, loving us, hating us.

The verbiage used to describe the flavors were so poetic, epic and romantic . This was so well written. It's a deep simple story, like our lives themselves Luis Brandoni is definitely a very talented actor, as the rest of the team, this one is really really good!

Beautiful series with lamentable appearance by De Niro
nobregas200019 December 2023
This beautifully shot series is funny and great with great performance of Luis Brandoni as a food critic. There are majestic images of Buenos Aires, its river and streets and a great inside shots of a beautiful BA apartment. Ironically, where the series fails is by forcing a Hollywood American actor into the story in order to attract viewers. The great American actor is not funny, is known to play mostly gangsters or criminal settings that have nothing to do with the show's subject matter, is not credible as a New York writer who appears to be very interested in BA but speaks very little or no Spanish and is starting to learn to eat beef. What is worse there is absolutely no acting chemistry between Brandoni and De Niro. At the end, the series appear to make a great effort and propaganda about having DeNiro and it is the producers, director and DeNiro himself who hurt the series the most; specially in the last episode when the two actors joint and collide.

Old guy living on his own terms
Valid_ID16 October 2023
This series is not for everyone; it certainly did nothing for me. I found it pretentious and superficial.

Robert De Niro's name is listed first, but he makes a token appearance. It's obvious they used his name in this series to drawn in an audience.

The production is fine (acting, camera, etc.), but it lacks an actual story. There's hardly anything to write about!

The series is drifting in the wake of an old gentleman who lives life on his own terms.

Good for him, but is there something to learn from it?

When all was said and done, I learned nothing from this show, and I was not entertained. It didn't ellicit any emotions because I could not relate to the character.

Following someone without being moved, or inspired, is a waste of time. Reality TV would be an improvement over this series. (I don't condone watching reality TV, I just used it to compare)

And why make an entire series for something that doesn't add-up, provides no new information, and doesn't instill any feelings? Well, the answer is simple: streaming content is paid by the length. So stretching anything into series became the norm.

At this time, there are only 2 user reviews here, both raving about this show. I often discard extreme ratings, and artsy-fartsy reviews, unless backed-up by logic.

To any event, I learned it's best to judge by yourself, and not be influenced by strangers' opinions.

So go ahead and give this series a try, if you have time to waste.

Beautiful piece of crap
phildeesnow10 December 2023
Yeah, the one star is because it's beautiful cinematography wise. The is pointless.

Fortunately enough it was short as a regular movie, if you put all the episodes together, but even if it was a movie it sucks anyway.

You might not understand why do I differ so much from other reviewers, and if you analyze the orthographic mistakes you will understand. Obviously are written by people that for one reason or another are bias to the production. I'm Argentinian, and cherish the photography, but this series don't make me proud at all.

We know that Robert De Niro did this almost as a favor, collecting only few millions, instead of his regular pay. And that's lovely, and something I don't really care.

For those who know the actors, I can't believe how bad the acting was. Total cringe.

Was the story worth it?.

There's is no story.

Still trying to figure out in what category this would fit... It's nothing.
