Helena, a tango singer in Buenos Aires, is on the right path to become a big star. When her lover Conrado tells her point blank he is leaving her, she goes into a kind of madness in which she follows him at a distance, calls him constantly on her cell phone and does everything possible to get them man she loved back. Unfortunately, he wants nothing from her. Helena, in a fit of passion, stabs her hand, in what might have been a desire to kill herself.
With the help of her vocal teacher, Helena tries to revive her career. She gets the opportunity of her lifetime when she is offered a presentation in a prestigious tango venue in Buenos Aires. After her success, Helena decides to run away from the city and ends up in a Belgium coastal town where her brother Andy lives. Helena loves her new life working with a baker. A local doctor takes notice of her one day. He is instantly smitten. Helena is not impressed. Eventually, Helena finds local musicians, a small group that wants her to sing with them. Finding a new home and attempting to get a relationship going with the doctor, appear to get Helena back to normalcy.
Argentine director Diego Martinez Vignatti, whose work as cinematographer was seen in films by Carlos Reygadas, is pursuing a career of his own. "The Tango Singer" is an ambitious film in which the action imitates a tango, usually a sad tale of a love gone wrong. As a man that knows a thing, or two, about photography and how to place his camera for good effect, Mr. Martinez Vignatti takes us to watch two realities, the one in Buenos Aires, where everything is painful for Helena, and that of Belgium, where she feels free at last, even in exile from her homeland. The film is more about Helena's state of mind than anything else. There are contradictions, but it is what she is going through what gives the film its drama.
Beautiful Eugenia Martinez Mori casts a luminous presence in the film. She is more an actress than a singer, or so is our impression, but one could be mistaken. She is the whole film, a loving tribute from the director. The great Oscar Ferrari, a marvelous singer, appears as Helena's voice teacher. Sadly, he died after film was completed and it is dedicated to him. Bruno Todeschini appears as the doctor.
