Rhymes of an Hour
slak96u17 July 2022
My God, enough of the Karen/Ed/Danny storyline. It's literally the lowest hanging fruit in drama, we end up with sophomoric played out storytelling and they just keep pushing it. Other than that, the episode is fine, even borderline great if afternoon soap love triangle was lit on fire. Finally we get towards the ending of the episode and the tension and drama truly picks up. The music and tone during Ed/Dannys descent onto Mars was absolutely a call back to the film First Man and was absolutely fantastic.

Some tension and humour
bobetjo8 July 2022
The tension between the competing teams to be first on Mars is a little stretched. They all had to start exactly the same day and might arrive at the same time? Suspend disbelief (especially as one ship has a constant burn lower thrust vs two NERVA nuclear engines).

There is a bit of humour at the end of the episode. I really laughed.

The story involving the Soviet manipulation was genuinely thrilling.

appreciation for the "for all mankind" writers' room
nocontextgeckos8 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It's incredible how engaging "for all mankind" remains despite continuing to insist on its most frustrating qualities. To start with, the scenes where danny was going through ed's mail were borderline unwatchable. After lev gorn joined the show a couple episodes back, vera cherny appears in this, reminding us how small the pool of russian speaking actors for cold war espionage dramas on american television is. Not to mention wrenn schmidt was already an alum from "the americans". One could only hope that costa ronin might show up a few episodes in. That aside, it was a thrilling episode. Loved how the writers have been touching upon the defining moments from ed and karen's past to build on and inform their present decisions. Back during the first season, karen's disapproval of the female astronaut candidates, despite her closest friend being involved with it, was one of those sharp writing decisions that made "for all mankind" a notch more appealing for me than what it sounded like from the premise alone. It's tapped again for very substantial reasons and seeing karen edge closer to her liberation feels like a fulfilling choice and made me appreciate how the writers have been persistent with her. Ed's failure with the apollo 10 landing and his continued grief, that we only caught glimpses of back when he was frustrated with kelly's decision to join the naval academy, gets touched upon in more meaningful ways. Danny stevens continues to frustrate and one might even question if margo's protective instincts for sergei had caught her in the same loop from her past. She detested von braun for justifying his actions but might end up creating just the same circumstances for aleida. The tussle between the astronauts just ahead of the closing scene just taps at the surface of how margo's collaboration maps out. The elevator scene from a couple episodes back might've made a strong case for wrenn schmidt finally getting some recognition but her work in this should've really qualified her for a nomination. Maybe she picks that up next year hopefully, considering that the nomination window for this year might've closed a week or so earlier. Somehow the persistence with which the writers continue to tackle these frustrating choices continue to pay off, sooner or later. So i'm far from giving up on this.

Great episode
xuajsten8 July 2022
This season has had a dramatic shift in direction from the previous two. Although I've enjoyed it from the start I feel this season has been like a coming of age event in the story lines.

I hear some reviewers complaining about the advancement in technology being unrealistic. I don't see this as the case at all. If you think where the human race was in terms of weaponry and aviation in 39 it took just over half a decade to develop bomb that could destroy a city and jet propulsion planes roaming the sky's.

The soviet ideology threatened everything America so stood and vice versa. It's not outside of the realms of possibility that technology was enhanced with defence of the moon bases in mind which opened up the door for advanced engines and ship designs.

The show is flawless I love it. Enjoy it for what it is not what you can complain about.

Up in the air (figuratively speaking)
wipster-19 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
We don't know what happened with Ed yet... from what I saw, they landed, just haven't communicated yet. It's possible they beat the NASA team to Mars... whether they stepped out or not, who knows. Guess we'll find out next week!

Karen Ed Danny
joemccormac24 July 2022
This is the most annoying storyline of what is otherwise a great show.

We do not need Dallas in space.

Dragging out a storyline like this just makes a mockery of what is normally great writing.

Space race by mostly stupid/arrogant people.
behaynes-552791 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So, the Soviets wrecked their ship by pushing their stolen (espionage) engines. Maybe there was a "thanks for saving us from certain death", but I don't remember it. So how do they repay their debt to the Americans? They try to put first foot on Mars as a nice F-U to their rescuers. Hey Russian doctor, I want you to keep tabs on combined crew well being. Soviet commander: "Again, please don't give orders to my crew." Frankly, Poole should have said "you're guests here, but you have your suits and the airlock is over there. Do svidaniya comrade".

Poole... sheesh. You have *a* ship. You saw how the soviets shot themselves in the foot to be first. Ed and his crew made orbit first, guess that doesn't count as "first". Nope, I'm going to risk my one and only ship to land in a storm. Crash land. Great job, Poole... if it wasn't for the free-market team with the flying hotel, you know, they one way better equipped... hydroponics, landing craft, spin gravity, Danny (no wait, that last one is an albatross around the neck). Just couldn't let the Phoenix team have the win.... It's still a win for the West. But nope... we're going to crash our ship to beat a free-market enterprise. Then go hat in hand for a ride home in a couple of years.

I can see it now... Soviets continue to act like entitled pricks. Everyone is going to trying to suck on the Helios/Phoenix crew for resources to save NASA/Roscosmos collective asses.

The Disappointment Continues
BLAlley10 July 2022
Once again they trade technical accuracy and the drama and wonder of the incredible achievement of going to Mars in favor of CW melodrama driven by people who have no business being part of a space flight. The worst is the Norman Bates wannabe son of Gordo and Tracy who after twelve years is still pining for Karen and plotting against Ed.

This is what you get when you have a good idea but don't know how to flesh it out, certainly not for more than one season.

No surprises here

I find it rather annoying that you can guess the outcome of a story just by looking at the cast.

On one side you have a shuttle with two white guys.

On the other side you have a female president, NASA (which seems to be mostly run by women now) and their shuttle with a black female commander.

So, who is going to win that race?

What a ripoff.
pungster8 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It was a pretty good episode. The only thing that spoiled it for me was the ending. After all of that buildup, after coming so close to making that character arc for Ed and giving him the chance to make up for the Apollo 10 decision, they rob him of the chance to land first and finally have his moment.

What a shame, and what a ripoff.

Why?
brilliance-6260711 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
And the point of having Ed go essentially all the way to about 20 feet from landing to aborting was what?

If you didn't want him to be the one then just do that, it makes no sense to say he'd go alllll the way and about right before landing.

It just doesn't make any logical sense.

And who thought the astronauts fall/fighting off the ship was a good idea to end the episode?

Cringe. Definition of it.

And that's not even mentioning the terrible Danny/Ed scene. Let that terrible idea of storyline die out already.

Instead we get weirdo Danny and constant reminder of the gross, quasi-incestuous relationship with Karen.

Screw over Ed the show?
matt_ryan-5600129 July 2023
Did the writers not realise that they set Margot, Poole and NASA up as the bad guys when she implemented a coup to get her own petty way?

If the roles were reversed, Ed would not have supported such a coup just because it was good for him. Poole, on the other hand, doesn't even express any possible concern about going along with such an underhanded play by Margot; all she can care about is that it advances her goals and career.

Now in this episode, they screw over ed even more. He's going to win the race, then he's not because solar sails, then he is because Russians, then he's not because dust storm, then he is because he's first, then he's not because he's too scared for Ed, repeating his shame again with Apollo ten.

The writers apparently do not realise they set up Poole and Margot as the bad guys, meanwhile screwing of Ed on the most demeaning ways.

Well that sucks...
SpookyMartian11 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The ending just threw me off, i really can't understand the writer's intention. I mean how can Ed come back from this? Like the Apollo 10 wasn't enough already, why do this to him again?

Also the demonizing of CCCP just reached a level of ridiculous in this episode. I mean no one expect Soviet Union to be painted as saint, but come on..

njmace8 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This show was doing really well without all the pc crap

But of course the black woman lands before the middle aged white man even though he is way more qualified to make that landing

Jeez they need to stop with all this wokeness it's ruining tv shows.

Seriously?
scottsideasare10 July 2022
How stupid can they possibly end an episode? Besides the obvious drag out conflict, they choose to introduce complete idiosity for the ending.

The series borders on brilliance at times and then throws it in the dumpster to make sure a political agenda is met.

So Woke & Terri-bad I Can't Stop watching LOL
pezzist-129 July 2022
Worst plot ever! Good thing is producers have a chance if Hollywood keeps this up! Support your young writers!

Unfortunately, this show has nothing to do with space or mars.

We somehow don't have a main cast member now.

I've counted at least 35 show rip offs in this series so far and probably 6 in this episode alone.

At this rate it would be wise to pivot and just remake Battlestar Galactica by stating the Woke President is a Cylon and get rid of the entire cast except Joel Kinnaman.

Again, someone needs to stand up for real talent, I support Joel.

Shame on you Ronald D. Moore, Ben Nedivi, & Matt Wolpert. I still blame Steve Jobs for all the sketch things available from Apple. This man is coming at us from the grave.
