- Jeremy Clarkson sets out to diversify, as a way of increasing his annual profit (£144 last year).
- Jeremy is back at his farm. Its July 2021. Charlie Ireland is the accountant and Lisa Hogan runs the farm shop.
The ruinously expensive sheep are not been looked after by a sheep farmer. Jeremy provides the equipment and the sheep, the farmer does all the work and they share the losses. Jeremy is growing durum wheat, which is used to make pasta. He has millions more bees.
Kaleb Cooper has a new baby. The farm shop is more popular than ever. The line is so long that it is blocking traffic on the main road. This meant that Jeremy had to clear 2 acres of wheat to create a car park big enough to accommodate all shoppers.
It is harvest time. Last year 520 acres of barley, wheat and rapeseed, earned Jeremy 144 pounds. Jeremy starts in the barley fields with the moisture test. The magic number is 15.5, and the crop is at 15.9. Its early morning when moisture is a bit high.. the harvesting is on. Simon brings in a new combine harvester. After 2 loads, the moisture level is still 15.8 .. Kaleb says that they should not be above 15.5.. So, the harvesting stops after 3 trailer loads, which is 36 tons.
The local vandals have tried to set fire to the barley storage area. The local police has a Vauxhall Corsa, which is a slow car, and they cant chase any baddies. Due to the shortage of lorry drivers, they only booked one lorry to take the barley away. This meant some of the barley was left outside. If it rains, 5 tons of barley will be ruined. The next day, it rains. The barley trader reports a moisture content of 16.5% and this means a drying charge of 9.75 pounds per ton and a 4.5% weight loss penalty. This meant a loss of 450 pounds, plus the 750 pounds lost due to the barley rotting in the storage area in the rain.
Brexit meant no EU grants and subsidies for agriculture. The British Government promised support at the same level. But the money never flowed through. Charlie tells Jeremy that he will lose 82000 pounds in farm subsidy. Jeremy's new plan is to have cows on the fields. The cows will poo on the field, where he will raise the chickens. The chickens eat the worms from the poo and trample the poo into the ground. Charlie says that cows might get tuberculosis from the badgers and they are in a high risk area. They cant kill the badgers as it is not allowed. His next plan is to turn the lambing barn (which they are not using anymore) into a restaurant. Sell the beef in the restaurant. They have the potatoes, mint for the sauce, wheat for the pasta and so on
Since it rains for 4 days, Jeremy decides to change the tires on the tractors. But Kaleb says that the barley is ready and they need to harvest now. It takes an hour to change all the tires. It takes even more time to hook the trailer to the tractor. Jeremy spread the left over barley over the storage area and puts the new barley on top of it. In 2 days, all barley and rapeseed are harvested. Jeremy goes cow shopping to bet breeding cows and male cows that can be fattened for eating. The male cows have their testicles removed for safe handling. The calves will take a year and a bit to grow up. Steers are for the fattening and Heifers are for breeding. Jeremy doesn't understand anything and Charlie buys 20 cows. Cow calf pair goes for 2000 pounds. Heifers go for 1450 pounds, delivery included.
Alan the builder is brought in to build the farm shop restaurant. With the all work Alan quotes 250,000 pounds to build the restaurant up to codes. The wheat is harvested. Gerald Cooper is the head of security. He takes over the combine from Simon. The combine starts making sounds at Gerald and he cant fix it. Eventually Kaleb has to jump in to fix the problem. Gerald is old school and cant keep up with the technology. The harvest of 2021 is in and cows are unleashed on the fields. 280 field posts are erected to keep the cows in. Jeremy brings in a field post erection machine to help with the same. The machine also installs the barbed wire. The next day, fencing is complete and the cows arrive.
