A long and boring lecture that just goes on forever.
Perspicuity112 September 2023
Through this film Karan Johar tries to teach his audience to be more progressive and let go of stupid old traditions because they were not right in the first place and have not improved our lives in any way. It's good to talk about all these things, I just wish Karan Johar himself followed what he has preached in the film, because looking at the title of the film, it seems Karan still believes that changing the spelling of a name will actually make his film a success.

WHAT'S GOOD :

1. Ranveer Singh was easily the best part of this film. His flamboyant portrayal of Rocky Randhawa was extremely entertaining to watch and the movie would have benefitted a lot if he was the main focus of the film. Not for a moment does it feel like Ranveer is forcing himself to act and also he never feels out of character. Once again Ranveer proves how good of an actor he is and it goes without saying that he is an absolute joy to watch on screen.

2. Every scene involving Dharmendra was truly worth watching. The veteran actor has a charming screen presence and even at this age can act better than most of his co-actors. The emotional impact of the dialogues delivered by Dharmendra was more than any other actor in the film; I just wish he had more scenes in the film.

3. Tota Roy Chowdhury's performance was easily the best among the supporting actors of the film. The scene where he reveals his story to Rocky was extremely heartwarming to watch and of course his dancing was phenomenal throughout the film. Aamir Bashir is an extremely underrated and unfortunately a very underutilized talent of our film industry; be it 'Inside Edge', 'School of Lies' and now this, he always delivers a top quality performance but for some mysterious reason remains under the radar. Jaya Bachchan as the evil mother reminded me of Amitabh Bachchan in [url=tt0213890] with some added goofiness. I didn't like her character at all, which only means that she played her role quite convincingly.

WHAT'S NOT GOOD :

1. The movie just goes on forever, as if it's on a mission to bore it's viewer to death before coming to an end. When the trailer itself has informed the viewers about it's central conflict, then why does the movie waste an hour to get there? Also, after the houses are interchanged, the movie just turns into a television show, with no real intention of reaching anywhere. There is absolutely no way this movie should have had a runtime of three hours; a ninety minute runtime was more than enough.

2. Karan Johar's films are known for their music but unfortunately this one has forgettable songs. A number of songs have been thrown into the mix, but by the time you are done watching the film, you don't remember any of them. Pritam has been delivering some beautiful songs of late, but it seems even he wasn't inspired to create some gems for this dull and boring story. Every single song of the film should have been rejected at the editing table.

3. The movie starts off nicely with some genuinely entertaining scenes thanks to Ranveer Singh's flamboyant portrayal of Rocky Randhawa, but soon turns into a lecture of morals and code of conduct with non-stop lessons being forced upon you in every single scene. Now it's a good thing to talk about social evils, but it has to be done in an organic manner and it definitely should not be the whole point of the film. Also, the movie gets carried away so much in some scenes while lecturing that it just becomes absolutely nonsensical. What was the whole point of that 'bra' shop scene? Was it really necessary for Ranveer to wear a bra to understand the point? Normally, people are hesitant in talking about their undergarments, they are not ashamed of it. That scene went unnecessarily over the top. Also, how is it wrong if someone is shy to talk about undergarments? That whole sequence felt like a case of feminism gone wrong.

4. The whole movie has the feel of an Ekta Kapoor soap opera, something that we stopped watching a long time back. Rich people dressed up all the time as if they are about to go for a wedding; mind games being played between daughter-in-law and mother-in-law; even the background music reminded me of the music that played during the Ekta Kapoor produced television shows.

5. The movie tells the story of two families, one of them being conservative while the other one being liberal and progressive. Now, it's completely fine for people to have different beliefs but to show one family as regressive while the other one as progressive is stretching it a bit too much. Life needs balance in order to function properly, you need to be progressive as well as a conservative; it makes no sense to declare one way of life as wrong because both of them have their downsides. Extreme form of anything will only lead you towards the realm of absurdity, where nothing good can ever exist, so it's always best to maintain a good balance in life as it allows us to take the most logical and sensible decisions in life.

6. Alia Bhatt wasn't a good choice for this role. Of late it has become common to push Alia Bhatt's name for every big project, regardless of whether she is suitable for it or not and this of course being a Karan Johar directorial, he was obviously going to take her considering the amount of love that he has for her; but unfortunately he took a wrong decision. From the very first scene, an attempt was made to portray Alia Bhatt's character as a very sexy woman, who wears sarees and has a voice of her own, but the director failed to do so convincingly, simply because Alia Bhatt wasn't fit for this role. Alia Bhatt's baby face and her voice completely takes you out of the kind of scene that the director was trying to showcase. This role required someone like an Aishwarya Rai or Kareena Kapoor or Kiara Advani. Even her acting felt forced on a number of occasions; she just wasn't cut out for this role.

7. I was hoping to find some comedy in the film, but apart from the "Big Boss" joke I didn't find anything to be particularly funny. Regardless of how we see 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' and 'Kal Ho Na Ho' today, one can't deny that they had a lot of humour.

I had high expectations from this one after all the praise it received from the critics, but I guess it was naïve of me to trust the judgement of critics in the first place. 'Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani' is a long and boring lecture that just doesn't know that it needs to conclude things as well.

Not the "Kahaani" you'd expect from Karan Johar
oazam-9402128 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The B-wood industry has been yearning for one thing and one thing only - MONEYYY! This is an evident example of how talentless people steal the spotlight for those who have been trying to pursue their passion but can't thanks to the veterans who have been loaded for their children.

So this is a film that centers around 2 characters from different cultural/traditional backgrounds.

Meet Rocky Randhawa and Rani Chatterjee

Rocky comes from a stereotypical but affluent Punjabi background that consists of his parents Tijori and Poonam, his grandparents Kanwal and Dhanlakshmi, and his sister Gayathri a.k.a Golu. Dhanlakshmi runs a "mithai" empire and is considered the matriarch of the house with lack of respect for her daughter-in-law.

Rani comes from a conservative and traditional Bengali background that consists of her parents Chandon and Anjali, and her grandmother Jamini. She is a news anchor by profession while her mother is a literature professor and her dad, a Kathak dancing instructor while Jamini runs the household.

The fall in love element comes into play due to the past history of Kanwal and Jamini as they were in love a long time ago but due to their differences, they couldn't be together. So coincidentally, Rocky and Rani meet, fall in love, and decide to get married

Due to the family's oppositions, they decide to switch places to prove their worthiness and how their fate is what forms their love story along with healing the past and the present of the Randhawas.

Okay, might seem like a decent plot but the film focuses too much on the family drama aspect rather than the romantic aspect of the film that was supposed to be there. The screenplay was completely erratic and convoluted to a very high extent that tethered to the highest of predictability levels.

First a fall in love scenario and then the rest of the 90-100 mins on the family drama aspect. So it's like ADHM & HSKD in the beginning, then K3G & BKD in the middle, and lastly spice it up with a copied KKHH and 2-states climax.

So it's a hybrid from KJo's filmography. A typical ending to any KJo film, the guy wins the girl after all the maafi's have been done from both respective families .

This is clearly apparent how originality is diminishing from the face of this industry and how nepotism is being heavily triggered and this film is a clear example of this issue. Exploitation, nothing else.

When it comes to performances, this is one aspect that can be accepted as both the lovebirds performed immaculately in their roles.

Ranveer Singh was able to display a flamboyant persona on screen while Alia Bhatt was subtle and nuanced and did make herself leave a decent impression in front of the audience.

The veterans Jaya Bachchan, Dharmendra, and Shabana Azmi were also good in their respective roles and managed to bring a bit of that spark in this confusing film.

Jaya Bachchan reminded me of Yash Raichand, Dharmedra acted almost like Rishi Kapoor from Kapoor & Sons while Shabana Azmi acted like Farida Jalal from KKHH.

Dharmedra portrayed a aging and amnesiac grandfather with not many dialogues but his presence was doable.

Supporting cast were fine but Aamir Bashir's role reminded me of Ronit Roy from 2 States. Same anger and attitude along with that complacent personality.

Pritam has made quite a comeback with some decent tunes but What Jhumka was a bit too much despite its slight peppiness it adds as original music exists for a reason. Tum Kya Mile and Ve Kamleya were the major highlights of this album and the melodious voice of Arijit managed to add some magic to this film.

Cinematography was fine and the editing was decent but could've been more crisper since ADHM looked better than this. Wish KJo wrote this rather than having his pay-rolled staff pen this confusion and have him sit in front of the camera. This is exploitation

Overall, Karan Johar needs to see the potential talent in front of him despite how nicely Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh performed but the narrative needs work. Too predictable and I think 90% of the audience know your filmography thank you.

2.5/5 - A Dharma wound.

I love you too from last night.
chand-suhas28 July 2023
"Soch nahi, swad wahi", is a line said by Alia Bhatt's Rani within the movie and it's perfectly apt for this Karan Johar directorial. Rocky Randhawa and Rani Chatterjee fall in love while fearing their differences in culture, ideologies would clash, resulting in destroying their love. To fight for their love, the duo decide to exchange their respective families for 3 months where Rocky goes onto live with Rani's Bengali family while Rani moves in with Rocky's Punjabi family run by the Matriarch Dhanalakshmi Randhawa (Jaya Bachchan). How their love story survive despite the ideology clashes forms rest of the story.

I wasn't prepared enough for a progressive Karan Johar family entertainer. Having said that, KJo is in full form as he is not trying to ape any other director or even please the current generation. He reclaims his identity and plays to his strength. Karan Johar is meant to narrate rich people stories and add to that a love story + lots of family drama, you get the recipe for a KJo blockbuster ready. What this films lack is good songs which again is made up by the usage of old classics.

RARKPK is not without it's flaws but Karan Johar fills it with enough memorable scenes, heart touching ones, that I had to stop complaining about the lengthy runtime. Speaking of standout scenes, both first half and second half delivers them back to back. Alia shines whenever she gets to but it is Ranveer who owns the film while letting the veterans to take over their respective scenes. My only major complaint would be the Dhindora Baje song as Dola Re bit before that had already done the magic, also that bit was my paisa vasool moment.

Karan Johar truly upgrades his arsenal, while the standing upto the matriarch might be the major plot point, several other issues are highlighted sensibly and kudos to the team. Sure, the initial scenes are jerky, trying a bit too hard while introducing the two main leads but after that it's a smooth narrative. The ode to classic songs or to other films' famous lines including the one from K3G, Karan Johar has packed a solid entertainer.

Zero chemistry. Aalia was gorgeous
gg202123 September 2023
No story, same rehashed songs, dumb and shallow writing. Did not enjoy this movie at all.

This movie is everything Indian cinema needs to move away from. I really suggest karan produce movies from upcoming directors to understand how the industry needs to move on and grow.

For Ranveer, bro you need to say no to these roles. You are selling yourself short. You have immense talent and the goofy characters you've done so far need to end.

Overall the movie was an attempt to try and make the same thing again which Karan has been doing lately. Please give us better stories and writing, look around, the industry has grown a lot.

Rocky, Rani & Kahaani with a message
mayurmenon31 July 2023
With lots of trepidation, I mustered the courage to watch a Hindi film in a movie theater. But to my utter astonishment, I was in for a surprise. This is a good film.

The movie cleverly addresses the cancel culture, misogyny, and patriarchy in the Indian milieu, hidden beneath the glitz and glamour of Manish Malhotra's exquisite costumes. It's like tricking a child into swallowing medicine by masking it inside a kool-aid.

It serves as an exposé on age-old Indian traditions and gender stereotypes, presented in a format catering to the audience of the past. However, times have changed, and there is no need to disguise the truth anymore. Certainly content wise this is Karan's most progressive work to-date.

Still, overall, it's a pleasant watch that one can endure in the confines of a movie theatre. Ranveer Singh shines as brightly as his clothes, adding the bling factor for sure. Alia is effective, supporting cast get their moment and they deliver. Watch it for some good old Bollywood charm, nostalgia aided and embellished by some retro Hindi songs.

A paisa- vasool entertainment!

A visual and musical extravaganza which celebrates its irresistible spirit of joy, embraces India's cultural diversity and strikes a balance between tradition and modernity
Peter_Young14 November 2023
Finally, Karan Johar does it, finally. It's taken time, but this is without a doubt his best film. I thought his best film would probably come when he finally tones down the high melodrama that often prevails in his directorial efforts. But no, not only didn't he give it up, he actually embraced it wholeheartedly and in the process created a film so whimsical and animated you can't leave it. Indeed, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is a full-on emotional melodrama, but one that celebrates and remains in sync with its great spirit of joy, its musical abundance and cultural diversity, maintaining a deep connection to its Indian roots as well as the heritage of popular Hindi cinema, while conveying positive social messages through glossy entertainment.

The film is a visual extravaganza, and it's shot so well that in some parts it reminds you of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's films. The setting is highly luxurious and glossy, and the amount of money and effort put into creating some of the exteriors and the overall production design is quite evident. Some of the sequences, like the wedding ceremony, the Durga Puja party, among others, are absolutely stunning in their photography and style. Also noteworthy is the fact that finally a film by Johar isn't set in New York or London, finally a film that embraces its own Indian culture, particularly the diversity of it, and above all embraces the Hindi film format, showing that masala isn't a derogatory term for cheap potboilers, it could be a perfectly legitimate form of art, too.

The narrative style is just fully musical, and I can't think of a better way to have music as your main means of communication on film. Indeed, music comes everywhere, in the middle of the streets or a random conversation, even in the middle of a fight. The film totally celebrates Indian popular culture and it does so completely unabashedly. Some of the original numbers (including "Tum Kya Mile" and "Kudamyi") are stupendous and they're obviously wonderfully shot, but the nice original songs put aside, the film recaps numerous classic Hindi songs throughout its duration ("O Saathi Chal", "Hum Tum", "Abhi Na Jao", "Aap Jaisa Koi", "Aaj Phir Jeema", "Dola Re"), making it quite a fun nostalgic ride and a tribute to Hindi film music.

So, what this film is about is quite obvious, I believe. Rocky and Rani fall in love and their idea to bridge their cultural differences is to reside each in the house of the other for a period of three months. Both come from wealthy families, but his is a traditional, conservative Punjabi family led by his grandmother, a domineering matriarch who keeps a firm hand over everything and every member of the family. Rani comes from a liberal Bengali family of intellectuals and academics who love poetry and high culture. It is obviously a stereotypical portrayal, but it's passable. The hostility toward the two in each house exists, albeit at varying degrees depending on the particular members of the family, but it becomes a nice journey to learning and self-discovery for all.

Interestingly, instead of deepening the contrast between modernity and tradition, this film fosters a common ground between the two, finding creative ways to make them meet in the middle, which is exactly the kind of balance politicians in the world should do but never grasp. The film incorporates a strong feminist voice, while also defying gender stereotypes and prejudice. While the messaging is a little too obvious and a tad preachy at points, it's never extreme. The principles it promotes are most basic: equality, respect, and the right to self-fulfillment. At the same time, it strongly attacks the ever-restrictive rules of political correctness, and the weird phenomenon of the cancel culture, a terrible substitute for education and social change through teaching.

Now it's pretty obvious that the film isn't to everyone's taste. The dialogue is overtly emotional and exaggerated, with heavy music playing in the background and the camera focusing on crucial moments in amusing ways, exactly the way it's done in the most casual of soap operas. The way the families from different ethnic sectors are portrayed is also quite caricaturish. BUT it also depends on the context. Unlike Johar' Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), which was an awful film for many reasons, particularly because of its attempt to make a serious film through the most shallow scenery, childish dialogue and the most convoluted of situations, here the context is everything and the foundation is so wild and traditionally melodramatic that much of it is forgiven.

The film stars two of the top stars working in Hindi film industry today, Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, and both are wonderful in etching out their starry turns while still capturing the human core of their characters. Bhatt is exactly the right combination of the new Indian woman who knows her mind but also has her values intact, and she is wonderfully expressive and charismatic. It is Singh though, who keeps everyone on their toes. His flamboyant energy remains unmatched and is quite infectious, and even in the most melodramatic parts he manages to immerse himself in the dialogue and the character's emotional condition. The two have great chemistry together, which is very filmi but quite credible within the film's context.

But the show also rests on the towering presence of its veteran players, especially Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi. Bachchan obviously hardly ever hits a wrong note in a role similar to what her husband played in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001). Her character does veer into caricature, especially in her permanent frown throughout the film, but it's so much fun. She nails every second of Dhanalakshmi's imperious presence, vicious stubbornness, and non-nonsense attitude. Her dynamic with Alia reminds one of Dina Pathak's rapport with Rekha in Khubsoorat (1980). Azmi is wonderful as her polar opposite, portraying with great delicacy and depth a character that could have been sidelined as just another grandma-filler part, but she gives it so much meaning.

And so do the other players. Dharmendra does really well in a relatively small part. As his son, Aamir Bashir, an excellent actor in his own right who is quite underrated, plays the male version of his mother exceedingly well. Tota Roy Chowdhury as Rani's father who doesn't abide by the rules of gender roles and keeps his love for Kathak dancing alive, is excellent. His dance is fantastic. Bit parts by Kshitee Jog and Anjali Anand as Rocky's mother and sister, are very good. It is Churni Ganguly, however, as Rani's eloquent but condescending, high class and touch-me-not sort of woman, who is the best of the character actors, and she grows as a character. Overall, 'Rocky and Rani' is wonderful entertainment. It's not a perfect film, but its heart is in the right place and it works.

Cringe Fest! Can't believe its a KJo movie and 3 hours of Chitrahaar 😖
lisa-k046 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Can't believe its the same guy who made My name is Khan, K3g, kkhh, Kal Ho Na Ho. I mean what was he thinking! The whole movie looked like some spoof reel. Karan got lost in trying to look modern and traditional at the same time and we got a mix of chutiyapa kchidi. Its like listening to Spotify jukebox mix from the 80's to 22 for 3 damn hours! Predictable to the core. Acting is funny. Brilliant actors like Shabhana ji and Dharmendra were reduced to cringe roles. When that lady turns on the tv to make everyone listen to her sing and continues singing holding her daughters hand when he wanted to hit her?? OMG i wanted to rip my arm out and throw it at the screen with the amount of cringe in it 😖. What happened to you Karan? 😫

One word to describe this movie is: Hilarious. Ranveer Singh was so freaking good as Rocky. His comedic timing is just stunning. This movie reminded me of old Kjo movies that we all know and loved. The movie has a nice message and Alia delivered that message well and it was done really really well. It's a Karan Johar movie. It's going to be loud and dramatic and long but that's what we used to love about Hindi movies before they were just filled with remakes from South Indian cinema. Go watch it. Don't listen to anymore don't even listen to me lol give it a try and form your own opinion. I loved it and I could truly go watch it again and again.

Waste of time
nimitarora-2705928 July 2023
What a bad movie this was. Even Barbie was better than this. Alia Bhatt was just yelling in the whole movie. The movie seemed like a mixture of 3-4 masala movies. Only saving grace was Ranveer Singh. But honestly he should've said NO to such a script.

Over-the-top storyline, hyper characters who are always yelling, misrepresentation of Bengali culture and bad songs.

A once in a generation actor like Ranveer Singh should be careful in picking films. Such bad films are harmful for a top actor's filmography. And don't believe what Indian film reviewers are saying. They are all giving the same reviews. The film is bad.

Waste of Resourses indeed
hotakshay31 July 2023
I went to watch this movie with a friend of mine who loves such movies, but for this one he kept on insisting us to get off and leave, we did not, as I wanted to go through the whole movie just to conclude that its just another disaster from bollywood!!! Typical commercial movie. And one can only see that it is such "a ghisapita" type of movie!

Take any old south movie, bollywood-fy it, add more masala more melodrama, a pinch of overacting(Expected from Ranveer Singh anyway!), now, add some feminism, and voila!

You're ready to bore the audience to death!!

As its such a clichéd of this era!!! Every freakin movie is on about these elements esp in bollywood commercial ones!

Wholesome entertainer
divineflame0628 July 2023
Too good and a wholesome entertainer. Extremely witty and funny dialogues with a very good screenplay and gorgeous art design. The film looks extremely lavish and pretty and has the content to back it. Absolutely firecracker of a cast. Shabana Azmi, Jaya Bacchan and Aamir Bashir are the backbones of the film. Terrific acting by them. Dharam paaji without even saying anything shows how potent acting is without dialogues. The first time he mouths a full sentence, I got literal goosebumps. Ranveer is an absolute firecracker as he gets into his own element and owns the character of Rocky Randhawa. He shows his comic range as well as emotional range with aplomb. Alia goes toe to toe with him as their chemistry is sizzling. All the talk after watching the video of 'tum kya mile' about their non existent chemistry goes down the drain once both of them appear in the frame together. 1st half is a laughter riot and the second half takes over a more serious tone and touches upon some serious issues which are handled well given how mainstream the film is and who has made it. The film is just a shade under 180 mins but I never for a second gets boring. This is easily Kjo's best work. Go watch it and have a fun, relaxing and chill weekend. You won't regret this purebred Bollywood style masala family entertainer.

Jaya Bachchan saying ' keh dia na bas keh dia.' Literal chills man!

Watch for Aliya and the Sets
sanjeevanwar30 July 2023
Anwar Says: King of family drama returns after 7 years and casted the best selling pair of Bollywood Ranveer and Aaliya , with stalwarts like Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi. But it's Aaliya's film all over. She resembles so much with Madhuri Dixit draping in some beautiful chiffon and cotton. Her role took me to memory of Rekha in Khoobsurat. For Ranveer the role was tailor made and it was a cakewalk for him. Dharmendra was excellent and Shabana was graceful. Jaya was seen imitating her hubby AB of K3G. Karan should have paid some more attention to second line of actors.

Overall Karan's prowess prevailed. In the first half the characters were seen having real fun but the change in tone in second half made it chaotic and it further dips in climax. Some emotional sequences are unnecessarily dragged.

Pritam's music is so typical and only Jhumka song is going to be played frequently on FM. Use of old songs sounded well to audiences born in 1950's and 1960's. Would reach to 200 Cr. Club but would not touch the earnings of Pathan.

Karan Johar is laughing at us
cinish5 August 2023
I wasn't sure if I am watching a movie or a spoof.

Dharmendra has been turned into such a caricature, that it is plain disrespect for the veteran.

Lot of yawn tears. Like those college lectures where you sit through as you don't have the guts to walk out.

The money that is thrown into each of the scenes is dizzying. About as dizzying as the melodrama spurts.

Alia Bhatt and Ranvir Kapoor have both excelled in whatever they have been asked to do. Humor has worked out.

Karan Johar is not being sloppy at how he made the movie. He is saying this is all you guys need. I am the king of bollywood - I decide what you get to watch, and looks like he has very little respect for the audience by the prolific amount of crass he laid.

There is a scene with serious emotional drama, and Dharmendra needs to be taken to the doctor. Ranvir cries n..u..r...se loudly, and runs in athletic slow motion in his kathak dance attire.

Painful watch. Wouldn't recommend to anyone.

I don't always write reviews but I prefer writing reviews especially when the movie is either a must watch or is a total waste of time.. and it's a no brainer to figure out which category RARKPK falls in.

Knowing it won't be a blockbuster I went to watch because, no one wants to miss two of the greatest acting stars right now, Ranveer & Alia.. but even with such great talent, KJo comes up with garbage.. there's really no other word to describe this movie.. I feel bad for the people who've rated it higher..

From storyline to acting, from dialogues to fashion sense, can't decide what was worse.

Nothing new!
sudeep-jay5 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The first half of the movie is Amazing! Nice narrative and Amazing acting by Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhat. Over the top romance, songs and even a bit of suspense if you might call it. Then there is intermission, you go out to get some popcorn and soda, you come back and sit down, Suddenly you are wondering if you are watching the same movie? From then on, If you have grown up watching Karan Johar films from the last 20 years and know about the hindi serials from last 20 years probably you will not notice anything new! If you love Ranveer Singh the this is a must watch and also if you are a Alia Bhat fan, If you are neither then you will not miss much.

THANK YOU KARAN JOHAR!
soniahayati4 August 2023
All the noise and unpopular opinions about Karan put that a side. This movie is not perfect its not a masterpiece. BUT if you really are a bollywood fan and have been missing that old bollywood movie style then this movie will give you all that.

I personally have been earning for it, I as a true bollywood lover have missed this type of genre a lot. Best point about the movie, anybody can relate with or to something or some character in this movie - thats the beauty of it. And Kudos for Karan and the writers for achieveing that. Young or old it has something for every generation.

You will laugh and cry, I have never laughed during a scene where I have tears in my eyes at the same time. Full family entertainment movie.

Only rocky and Rani
sameerlodaya28 July 2023
Sameer lodaya.

The movie has only rocky and Rani to focus on rest all is very usual

Remarkable come back of ranveer after his last flops he has nailed this his character of rocky to the core he did all elements perfectly as pure rich Delhi type punjabi Munda and alia as Rani was no less she looked gorgeous and equally carried the movie with ranveer very passionately..these both characters are the heart of the movie rest all were very normal

The movie is extravaganza in all aspects you say aesthetically, colourful costumes, huge sets, beautiful locations, swanky cars ,dance sequences ,old songs as background scores these all will give you a very eye pleasing feeling ..the humour was outclass ,the chemistry between rocky and Rani was intense ,the movie breathed only when they were on screen..the movie is meant for tier 1 viewers

The second half was dragged with emotions in karan Johars typical style some may like it but it is boredom on mind in this era also sadly the songs dint hit the charts

The movie is of families but not a family watch so if you are fan of kjos movie you must go.

I am still not understanding why this movie was made. Such a pathetic movie. Terrible star cast and story. Nothing new. Just copy paste some old movie and dialogue and other things and make a movie. All the actors are supremely showing stupidity and senseless acting. Please don't watch this movie. Your hard-earned money is very important to you. Please don't waste by watching this garbage.

Songs -- Pathetic Acting -- below average Direction -- Can you imagine anything worse than this.

Everything is waste and pathetic . I don't see any positive thing about this movie. Worst movie by a sadakchaaph director and senseless actors in this movie.

Loved every moment of it.
harpreetc29 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I knew I'd like the movie. Because I am an Alia fan. Because I love old school family dramas. Because I enjoy Karan Johar's direction and vision. I ended up loving the movie.

RR has all the masala and the twists for a Bollywood hit. And it feels like a hit without a single macho punch being pulled anywhere on screen. It also hit close to home for very personal reasons. There are simply too many similarities right now between my life and various episodes in the film. I think that's important for a good movie. And that's why I loved it - because I connected with it.

The story is simple. An intelligent, self-made, independent, educated woman falls in love with a rich, loud, narcissistic, lovable, carefree man. Families realise the disparity and the lovers decide to test themselves in each other's spaces for a few months.

In the midst of it all, you throw in a septuagenarian romance that's links the families further. A matriarch who governs with an iron hand (already done in Ram Leela with a far greater flair) but this doesn't include physical but emotional violence. A house governed by ambition and a quest for material prosperity. The other house governed by freedom and a quest for intellectual betterment and acceptance.

The movie doesn't just tackle the romance and the odds of the hero and heroine. But interlinked within the families, each character struggles to find a voice or realises that the voice they were using could be biased at best and cruel at worst, as well.

The film has both Pride and Prejudice. It's a subtle encapsulation of how people look down upon people, how we form prejudices based on past experiences and why it is important to realise our own trauma and make peace with due apologies. Every person in the movie is flawed. And growth happens with the realisation of these flaws and seeking to better one's self through mature decisions. The only abrupt change that seemed jarring was the write-off they gave Dhanlakshmi, Jaya's character. But in a way, it was for the best, because it was in keeping with her character that the change wasn't radical or real, but implied off-screen.

Dharmendra and Jaya Bachchan are brilliantly cast in characters just made for them. Shabana steals the screen when she is on it, as the woman who experienced true love for a few days that lasted a lifetime. She battled abuse and raises a son who is different from the typical idea of what a man should be and do, in India. This is brave (uncannily) and well handled by Karan. The scene where Alia's father is ridiculed speaks to every boy who grows up different in a patriarchal society. Ranveer's Rocky wears an outfit that's vomit green as he laughs with the crowd. I noticed it, Karan.

The monologue Rocky gives addressing the ridicule Rani's father faced, after a Kathak performance, is worth an honourable mention. It speaks of the need to understand not just what is considered woke in the modern day world but also the dangers of cancel culture that circles around it. For those who say that never happens to men who are into classical dance, you truly either live in a different world or choose to ignore the problems that are very much around in this world.

Rani's character excels in her confrontation with Rocky's father. It is the frustration of all liberal mentality that reaches a crescendo there. The dangers of that is almost as bad as the despotic power that Dhanlakshmi holds over her entire family. Almost. But not quite.

The costumes were extensions of the characters. Rani was mostly dressed in the most beautiful sarees, since Sridevi's performance in English Vinglish. Red being her colour and the implication of red being the colour of true love and passion, given it being the colour of the most sensitive character, of Rocky's grandfather, essayed by Dharmendra. It is perhaps the colour that flares out when poetry is ousted by industry. Rocky thus wears a riot of colours, because he has it all in him and Ranveer can carry off all of them because he knows he can.

There are a multitude of old song covers. Mostly from a favourite film of mine, Hum Dono. And the songs set to the OST of the movie are not particularly engaging but they work for the tempo of the movie. My favourite is actually not the title song but Ve Kamleya.

All in all, I end with my personal opinion that Karan Johar has written a wonderful script. He has applied himself once again to creating a family drama for the modern world and he has succeeded. The movie is exemplary for the fact that it speaks of breaking away from issues that do not truly matter and finding ground in a world that is trying to find a place for each person's uniqueness.

An Ayushmann Khurrana movie set in KJo Cinematic Universe
critiquerimdb19 August 2023
Rocky Aur Rani is another addition to the gallery of Dharma films with cringe and wordy titles. Karan Johar is famous for making unapologetically formulaic potboilers with larger than life settings, unrealistic tropes, humour banking on audience's stereotypical and/or prejudiced mentality, scintillating chemistry, great soundtrack and score, extremely convenient resolutions and a buttload of melodrama. Rocky-Rani, however, does two things differently. It underwhelms on the music front and it ditches punchbag character-oriented humour for more progressive comedy.

The movie is filled with pop culture references, many of which were self-eulogising and relied on the feedback loop of celebrity culture whose torchbearer is Karan Johar himself. It also takes up certain plots that could potentially contradict each other and then dissolves them conveniently for the benefit of the main storyline that revolves around the lead pair. Half of the film's budget seems to have been spent on obtaining licenses to the many, many popular Bollywood numbers it used to set up the chemistry between its lead pair - something its average original soundtrack probably wouldn't have managed.

You walk into a Karan Johar film expecting all of this but where this film surprises is in its tonality. The movie feels like an Ayushmann Khurrana social comedy set in Karan Johar cinematic universe. You have a relatable, spoilt but receptive "raja beta" as the lead who falls in love with someone who transforms him into a progressive man. The main conflict then revolves around this man transforming the rest the regressive characters into doing better and the resolution is always acceptance and togetherness. Of course all of this involves extremely wealthy characters whose jobs turn demanding and non-demanding as per the plot's need. You even have a monologue or two by the leading man but Karan is calculative enough to know how much he should challenge this post-pandemic cinemagoing audience so he villainises the woman by making her impulsive at one point. He also chooses to dedicate one monologue to victimisation of the leading man who has been trying to change but the cancel culture would simply not let him catch a break!!! It almost felt like Karan was directly talking to those in the audience who have cancelled him for problematic tropes in his past films.

The film almost tips in the favour of the Bengalis in this ultra rich person's Vicky Donor but tries to add nuance to show it's not biased against Punjabis or views all Bengalis as progressive. You have good and bad on both sides. Its resolution positively surprises when it holds back from going completely Disney on you. It acknowledges incorrigibility in some people while also discussing (in its contrived Johari manner) the root cause behind it.

The performances deserve a special mention. You have incredible supporting cast from Jaya Bacchan to Shabana Azmi to Dharmendra. The leading pair too did well - specially Alia whose ethereal beauty and captivating screen presence was a character in itself.

Overall, the film makes for a fantastic one-time watch that stays with you for a couple of hours after viewing. You can watch it with your friends and family.

Boring, outdated, cliche.
robbieyankees1 August 2023
Bollywood isn't even trying to grow up, the standards are so low that these billionaire filmmakers spend millions for paid PR and the so called 'success celebration party' after one day of the release. It's funny how these filmmakers can brand a movie hit or flop by throwing money. Can't change the fact that a very stale and outdated product like Rocky aur Rani, won't survive for much, even after all those millions spent on paid PR in social media apart from all the advertisement and promotion. I needed sleeping pills after just half an hour or the movie, Ranveer Singh is terrible. He thinks he can act but he always overacts and is boringly annoying. Alia continues to do well but rest of the cast wasn't upto the mark. The movie is one of the worst of all time for sure, I wasted my money because my friend wanted to watch the movie and I had to accompany her. What a bad decision it turned out to be!

Entertainer of the year
zeanrem1 August 2023
This movie was a breadth of fresh air after a long marathon of rubbish, poorly made, high budgeted movies.

A very entertaining movie with a good message. It did not feel like a long boring movie at all, I was longing for more.

Both Ranbir and Alia were too good in their respective roles. The entire star cast was very well chosen. A special mention to Rocky's friends character in the movie, was super funny.

Kuddos to Kjo for getting it right yet again also a big applause to all the writers and choreographers for doing and amazing job. This movie is gonna be a classic just like other KJO movies:)

Cant wait for the next!!!

ROCKY AUR RANI KII PREM KAHAANI:-an enjoyable family drama
puranjanbasak22 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Rocky aur rani kii prem kahaani is a family comedy drama romantic film directed by karan johar.

Ohh, this was an overstuffed package, both good and bad. Let's travel those one by one. Ranveer singh and alia bhatt share an infectious chemistry, completely quashing every claim of lack of chemistry between them by netizens. Infectious are their performances too. Ranveer singh, brought up in a toxic household, still holds on to the soft masculine side that his grandfather possesses. He is quirky, sometimes over the top and always ready to acknowledge the differences. I liked his character portrayal. Alia bhatt plays the independent, outspoken, progressive, independent woman. And she plays the part where she looks like rubbing her personality onto other women as well. She was drop dead gorgeous as well, if I may add. The frames that dharmendra and shabana azmi shared was great. Their kiss was the most lovable moment of the film. The supporting cast is excellent. Especially tota roy chowdhury, who imparts the soft, generous male character to the film. A kathak dancer, by profession, always laughed at by the bystanders, he takes it on his chin and never lets it affect him. Shabani azmi is too good an actor. This was a cakewalk for her. However, the characters of churni ganguly and jaya bachchan, i could not fathom. Speaking of churni, nobody talks like that, in that british personified english at their home. Jaya bachchan plays her real husband from mohabbatein, too backdated for her own good, a caricature.

If we talk about the technical details, then the cinmatography was routine. The frames were luxurious, money oozing but the artistry was not much found. The music album is good. The songs 've kamleya' and 'ro layn de' are the best of the lot. 'Heartthrob' is a fresh party song, wonderfully sung by dev negi. However, what outclass these songs are the songs of the bygone era. Songs like 'abhi na jao chhodkar', 'aaj phie jeene ki tamanna hai', 'aap jaisa koi' still make out jaw drop in awe of the sheer difference in quality.

This film maybe the most progressive KJo film. It talks about toxic masculinity and how it ruin childhood and upbringing. The case of casual racism, sexism, societal shaming all are the bright points. Let's start the negatives from here itself. The social themes that the film tries to address, themselves pull back the film. There is so much stuffing in the second half, that it becomes overbearing. You need to give your viewers some time to digest the social themes, before you throw more at them. This also leads to the stretching of the film during the latter part of the second half. Another negative is its conflict resolution. Things are resolved way too simple, way too quickly. I know its a film, distant from real life, but atleast try to make it more relatable. Another thing is the half hearted take on the bengali accent. Being a bengali, it hurts when people playing bengali characters are not pronouncing it correctly. And in this aspect, i respect shabana azmi for bringing authenticity in her accent. Alia bhatt and namit das tried, but failed for the most part of it. And what is the need to talk in a language that is khichdi of english, hindi and bangla. Nobody says lines like 'mere hridoy e dard hota hai',(exaggerated) that is not a way to talk, please.

I am happy that family dramas are still earning at the box office. Its an enjoyable watch too. Maybe the second half could have been better, culminating in an even more impressionable film.

False reviews or over hyped
ayusht-0502112 September 2023
So i have watched this movie on OTT after renting. Soon enough after start i came to know seeing the performances that this is an stale attempt of self absorbed makers, but kept an optimistic attitude for rest of the movie. But at last i was left with a bad taste in my mouth of a half baked dish which lacked the spice also. The makers just wanted to show how to show off money by showing high styling wrapped over pseudo feminism. A good concept wasted by immature storyline, which could have been such a strong message if executed properly. Applause on the performance of alia bhatt, play nicely..

One time watch
mgurlgurl-890-84610912 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I was really excited to watch this movie after reading some of the reviews, but the issue with the movie is they tried too hard to bring light to issues such as misogyny. Ranveer did not have to wear a bra to prove a point. That could've been easily done in another way! The movie was a bit annoying with the constant old songs playing in the background, the actors randomly burst into singing through the movie. Alia's screaming was a bit over the top in every scene. Alia and Ranveer's kissing scenes were unnecessary! Ranveer constantly wearing brands was fine but the outfits did not have to have huge VERSACE and FENDI and GUCCI logos. Those were a bit tacky and over the top. In terms of acting, Ranveer was great. Jaya played herself in the movie. Alia was average. Dharmendra barely spoke a couple lines. And the big deal around Dharmendra and Shabana's little peck on the lips was dramatic. There was nothing worthy of controversy there. Overall it was a one time watch, I was not impressed.
