This was the last episode of 'Heartbeat', a show that was poorly treated by ITV at the end of its 18 series run.
Because they didn't know whether this would be it or not we are left with a cliffhanger ending annoyingly, though A) I think it would have been highly unlikely/realistic Oscar could've survived that and B) the scene in the pub with the regulars raising a glass to him was quite a fitting end in itself as the show really was as much about him as the lead copper on the bike.
Not the end fans would've wanted after all those years, but a begrudgingly acceptable one overall.
