Entertaining Western with a twist...
paul_haakonsen14 April 2021
I had the opportunity to sit down here in 2021 to watch the 2012 Western "Heathens and Thieves". Sure, I hadn't even heard about it prior to watching it. But I found the synopsis to be somewhat interesting. And since it was a movie that I hadn't already seen, of course I found the time to watch it.

And I must admit that writer John Douglas Sinclair definitely managed to compile a rather interesting and riveting storyline. The story told in "Heathens and Thieves" was one that instantly grabbed a hold of me and brought me along on an enjoyable and entertaining ride.

The story progressed at a great pace in the movie, and that definitely served the movie quite well. And also, the storyline was one that wasn't overly predictable and writer John Douglas Sinclair had managed to put enough surprises and twists into the storyline to make it rather unique and enjoyable.

And the characters that were placed into the storyline were very rich and detailed. So that made for a very believable character gallery, which is something that is always a great thing in a movie.

It should be said that the cast they had opted to hire for this 2012 Western were quite good. There were some pretty sound and solid acting performances throughout the movie. I have to say that I really enjoyed watching Andrew Simpson (playing Saul) and Gwendoline Yeo (playing Kun Hua) in the movie. But it was also good entertainment to have Don Swayze (playing Sherman) in this 2012 Western as well.

I was genuinely entertained by directors Megan Peterson and John Douglas Sinclair's 2012 Western movie. And should you have the opportunity to sit down to watch it, you should definitely do so.

My rating of "Heathens and Thieves" land on a six out of ten stars.

A DEAD MAN IS BAD FOR THE BABY
nogodnomasters5 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Two thieves/ murders (Andrew Simpson, Richard Doyle) end up at the home of a China man (Boyuen) and his family during the anti-coolie period, although the exact date is a bit confusing. This appears to be post Civil War era, but from the dialogue the law which passed in 1862 was not yet enacted. Ignoring this fact, as it seems everyone has ignored it, the movie itself was different.

On the plus side the acting was good and the scenery, sets, and costumes seemed realistic enough. However, the film moves from a western into the "home break-in genre" with bad guys vs. bad guys, leaving us to root for Saul (Andrew Simpson) the nicest of the bad guys. The story revolves around some missing gold which people suspect is hidden at the China man's home. We end up with the two thieves, a US Marshall, some slim balls who who represent the poor banker, plus the sheriff and his sidekick. This was one of those films that seems to drag for some unexplained reason.

Parental Guide: No f-bombs, sex, or nudity. The "R" rating I think was a bit too much.

Fresh take on the western genre
noreast-applied13 August 2013
I felt this was an excellent movie. The sets and locations were authentic and conveyed the sense of the timing of the movie. The photography was particularly creative. The story touched on several issues, race, honor, loyalty, corruption, the aftermath of the civil war, without being overpowering. The characters had depth and sincerity, especially the female lead. Some of their background was conveyed in a very subtle, but effective manner. The setting in California was an interesting wrinkle, but the movie still had the feel of a "western". It makes us think of the evolution of America. All in all a good modern take on the western genre.

Much better than expected!

Well, well, well, what do we have here? It's a Western, drama, thriller, action, mystery all in one! With compelling characters, I might add. As well as very good performances.

Andrew Simpson stars as Saul, the film's hero. He was such a delight to watch, with his gentle eyes and equally gentle, soothing voice. It was a pleasure watching and listening to him. Don Swayze was also very good as the main antagonist.

We've seen a myriad of films about thieves - or otherwise - looking for gold. This is not your typical cliched film, though. It was mysterious and very unpredictable. The mystery intensified as the story unfolded, until you had no idea who to believe or trust. It also became more and more intriguing as the film progressed. It just got better and better towards the end.

'Heathens and Thieves' was a pleasant surprise and a film I thoroughly enjoyed. The film also has a very nice, thrilling finale. I'm so happy with the way the film ended!! I loved this.

"What level of hell you reckon we're in now?"
classicsoncall1 June 2016
Warning: Spoilers
There's an interesting juxtaposition in the IMDb ratings for this movie; it merits only a 5.2 from the general population who rated it (as of 6/1/16), but five out of the six reviewers here before me gave it a ten. That's kind of interesting because I find myself in the company of those who offered comments on it. I wouldn't give it a ten necessarily, but it's an above average Western with a story line that's a bit different from your run of the mill sagebrush yarn.

That's not to say there aren't some confusing elements in the story, along with credibility issues with some of the situations. However I find them outweighed by the raw beauty of the cinematography and the gritty aspects of the characters. Perhaps the biggest twist coming out of the story was how much of a schemer Kun Hua (Gwendoline Yeo) turned out to be. Once she revealed to Saul (Andrew Simpson) how her husband Zhen (Boyuen) rescued her from a life of prostitution in San Francisco, but didn't love him, my radar immediately triggered, wondering if anything she said prior or going forward had any ring of truth to it at all.

I think that's why the movie was so fascinating. Many of the characters had hidden motives or were downright mysterious. For example Moses Burke (Michael Robert Brandon) - after hearing him claim he was a U.S Marshal, and after Kun Hua related a tale of knowing him as a Marshal, when all was said and done I couldn't tell with any certainty if he actually was a lawman or not. The only certainty it seems, was that every single one of the interlopers at the 'Gallagher' Ranch was after a stolen cache of gold, but even there, the story leaves it a mystery as to whether the gold was legally obtained or not.

As far as confusing elements, there was Saul shooting at his partner Bill (Richard Doyle) riding away from the ranch the first night, Bronco (Jesse James Youngblood) emptying the chamber of his firearm and then getting shot by the same gun, and Saul shooting Paco (John A. Lorenz) during the same scene, seemingly dead but showing up again in the story. Maybe the thing to do is watch this film a second time and see if any of the confusion clears up. But in the meantime, I'd have to go with my first gut reaction that this was an entertaining Western with a distinctively different story line, and if your tastes lie in the direction of nasty shootouts, it's got it's share of that too.

You'll want to watch it again
nicolejmagana24 October 2012
This is one of those movies that makes you want to go back and watch it again and again. There are so many twists and subtleties, you make new connections every time you see it! The viewer is kept guessing up until the end, and it's often hard to tell who is on which side. The production quality is fantastic, especially for an independent film. It is also one of the more historically accurate films in its genre. The music is all original and quite fitting; it complements every scene perfectly. You can tell that everyone involved really put their hearts into this production. If you're like me and you love movies that leave you thinking, "Wow, I never expected that!" then you will love this movie.

Super Spectaculatious!
CrimsonShade24 July 2012
I highly recommend this movie, and as to not give anything away I won't break into details ;) so you'll have to see to find out! but the cast & crew quite honestly did a phenomenal job! excellent cinematography. there a lot of points that make this such a wonderful addition to the Western genre, I think you'll know after seeing it for yourself :] great humour and wonderful points not often reflected upon enough in the genre. It breaks into the character of people & hits on the roles different people made on with in the Old West. You see the characters come to life and experience these roles first hand, & to jump the gun,(or guns as one might note) the title isn't without meaning. A really wonderful work!

Swayze's amazing performance makes this western a entertaining viewing
mongodogg3 April 2014
Don has an extremely versatile range, in this movie he's seems to take a eloquent theater background performance and morph it with a big screen evil villain. It's like Shakespeare doing a western his character was a thrill to watch! His delivery is outstanding, I was glued to his performance, from perfectly delivered lines to a character that he played beyond brilliant fully invested even in song at one point about, well I won't spoil it but it's hilarious. The movie is shot well and the cast is professional, the sets are beautiful with authentic era wardrobe. I really can't say enough about dons performance, this is one talented actor! I look forward to now viewing more of his work. I'm a western junkie and there are some modern pieces of garbage out there, this is not one of them, Swayze is brilliant in this 10 stars brother

Edge of seat knuckle bender
philzone-5060027 February 2019
Great western, absolutely keeps you wondering whats next. Acting is superb by all. Charcter portrail is genuine and all are beliveable. Cinematography is good. A lot of twists and turns for a western and it keeps you wondering and trying to anticipate the next move. Unpredictable and all characters have flaws that were not anticipated. Fun to watch and end is not a longed for thing.

Best Independent Western
gfiorini23 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Exciting and unexpected. This movie thrills and chills and keeps you on the edge of your seat through the final credits. There is no other western like it. A true one of a kind that reflects the mindset and desperation of post-civil war America and the gold rush that change the nation. The music pulls you into the story during the opening credits. Unique characters that are so individual you always know who they are but never know what they will do next. I love the tension, the unexpected twists, the timing and the suspense. Breathtaking cinematography of wildly beautiful fall colors, horses and untamed locations surround and juxtapose against the serious and dangerous games desperate people are willing to play to find a fortune nobody is sure even exists.
