Parodying the guilty pleasure shows, how appropriate!
kjnyr2 January 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Our favorite brothers held captive in TV Land by a Trickster, and Castiel is helpless to save them. This is one of the more comedic oriented episodes that is a refreshing way for the show to make clear that they don't take themselves too seriously. My husband and I must have replayed this episode a dozen times just for the pseudo CSI:Miami scenes alone. Mind you we *HATE* Caruso in CSI:Miami, making fun of it on every occasion, and Sam (aka Jared Padalecki) had "Horatio" down to perfection. The writers / actors were also dead on with the "Dr. Sexy" / Grey's Anatomy scenes, the Japanese game show and all the rest, exploiting what is ludicrous yet memorably addictive about these shows. Supernatural continues to be fun, innovative, thought provoking and imaginative entertainment. We LOVE this show!! It is our personal Guilty Pleasure!!

Funniest Episode Ever!
kittybuttons23 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This episode provides an excellent mix of 'Monster of the Week' style and story arc continuation. The majority of the episode centres around parodies of other famous TV shows, the highlights being Grey's Anatomy (Ellen Piccolo, Dr Wang!) and CSI. Other particularly amusing TV sketches are the 'Nutcracker' game and Herpexia advert - "I've got genital herpes"!

This is an excellent episode of Supernatural and, whilst it isn't my all-time favourite, it just inches ahead of the rest for being the funniest. (For other amusing episodes see 'Yellow Fever' and 'Ghostfacers', amongst others).

And yet, aside from the amusement there is a brilliant development to the Angel/Lucifer story arc. The Trickster was always the monster that got away and we finally get to see why. Given that I always loved the Trickster, I was very happy to find out he is one of the decent angels, the angel Gabriel. It all fit in very nicely with where the story is going at this point and ties up very well with another exceptionally funny episode, 'Hammer of the Gods'.

Fans of Supernatatural will love it. If you're a fan of Grey's or CSI and have a sense of humour, you'll love it too!

TV land
zombiehigh185 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
OK, First Dean watched Oprah, he listens to REO Speed Wagon, he is good with kids and now he watches "Dr. Sexy MD", Oh, Isn't he adorable?!

I might have mentioned before I never liked the Trickster mostly because how he tortured Sam by killing Dean over and over in "Mystery spot" and forcing Sammy to live the pain of loosing his brother. However, Seeing the Trickster back on "Changing channels" may change one's perception. On one of the most entertaining episodes of Supernatural, The Trickster takes Sam and Dean to TV land and the duo are caught in several amazingly hilarious situations. Jared and Jensen get the chance to deliver one of their most comic performances, excellent perplexed facial expressions and amazing one liners.

But the best thing about this show (other than brilliantly making fun of other TV shows and using soft music background on the hospital scenes) was how tied up this one to the main Myth arc. And the final scene delivers more answers and jaw dropping revelations than one could expect on a comic episode.

My only question here: How did Cas find the boys in TV land? Didn't he brand them with the sigil that hid them from all angels including him? And if he could find them, Why didn't other angels find them too? (Of course for Gabriel, he found them when they were already in town investigating a case that he did)

The best Supernatural parody!
Red_Identity5 November 2009
I love how Supernatural makes fun of other subjects, whether it makes parodies of classic monster movies, ghost reality-shows, and actual TV shows as shown here. This has got to be the best of all of the parodies Supernatural does. I love how it took a stab at Grey's Anatomy (the joke about ghosts in a hospital show was incredible) and crime shows like CSI. Above that, the opening segment of the sitcom was the funniest, because it was so unexpected. However, we do get some mythology subplots in here, and important information is revealed that makes the show seem to all fit in place. Incredible episode, best yet of the season!

The Trickster Scores Again

Wonderful performances by all and shows up the comedic talent of the writers and director. The hospital show, Dr Sexy, what's more of the most hilarious scenes ever. Anytime Richard Speight Jr shows up I'm never disappointed.

Trickster vs Wichester take 3
g-girly4 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I don't think the creators could help themselves. This is a Supernatural parody of most of the shows on TV, and though they shouldn't throw stones when they live in glass houses this was very well done.

This was the third Trickster installment and it was very well done. They managed to make fun of Grey's Anatomy and with it medical dramas, sci-fi flicks, cheap crime solving shows, games shows and my personal favorite, the sitcom. They were all clever and the boys in these roles were downright hilarious. The fact that Supernatural captured the best/worst aspects of these shows was wonderful.

The entire episode was mostly silly but it wasn't annoying and over the top, it was quite tasteful and watchable. The only sober bit in the entire episode was when they manage to trap the Trickster/Gabriel and they have a conversation. That was of course amazingly unexpected. All together it was a surprisingly awesome episode with very few flaws.

Bending spoons with my mind...
Chalice_Of_Evil6 November 2009
Warning: Spoilers
The whole opening sequence to this episode was awesome. From the "Supernatural is filmed before a live studio audience." voice-over to Dean putting stuff in the fridge, turning around, and the cheering/laughing as he said "I'm gonna need a bigger mouth." (in regards to the exaggeratedly HUGE sandwich). Sam's entry, again with the canned laughter, and his delivery of, "Oh, nothing, just the end of the world." (complete with hands on his hips and overdone gestures) was great. Even better was Sam's disapproving/chastising tone as he said "Deeeeeean..." (after Dean's "research" made her bikini-clad presence known), only to be outdone by the push-in to Dean and his delivery of "Son of a bitch!". All that was eclipsed, however, by the too-hilarious-for-words opening credits. The cheery song (and its lyrics), the different clips of the boys acting goofy - it was ALL hilarious.

Hey, Lana's Aunt Nell from Smallville! Her mentioning she saw the Incredible Hulk, and Dean asking "Bana or Norton?" was almost as good as her commenting that those movies were "terrible" (so very true!). Next best scene was Sam and Dean getting trapped in Dean's "Dr. Sexy, M.D." hospital show and Sam getting slapped by the "sexy yet earnest" Dr. Ellen Piccolo (her over-the-top/bad acting just added to the hospital soap opera/drama feel). Nice shout-out to Jeffrey Dean Morgan's character on Grey's Anatomy (the ghost in the mind of the "sexy but neurotic" lady doctor). Sam's disbelieving, "So...this show has ghosts??" and Dean's reaction to meeting Dr. Sexy were pretty funny (as were the "Doctor."/"Doctor."/"Doctor." exchanges). I liked Dean noticing the difference in shoes to what Dr. Sexy typically wore, then Sam saying "Yeah, you're not a fan." sarcastically and Dean admitting the show was his "guilty pleasure". I don't know why, but that one blonde female doctor calling out "Dr. Sexy?" over and over amused me (the simple fact that the character in the show is *called* 'Dr. Sexy' probably has something to do with it).

Sam's second encounter with Dr. Piccolo, with her gushing over how "brilliant" he was, combined with the intrusive sappy song playing and Sam's reaction to it, was pretty funny (the dialogue was what made it so). Sam operating on Dean after he was shot was also hilarious (Jared always plays the comical facial expressions brilliantly) - especially when the doctor who had a crush on him mouthed "I love you." and touched her hand to the glass. Sam and Dean getting stuck in the Japanese game show was somewhat amusing (though a little too slapstick). However, I'm sure that all those who've been having a problem with Sam for some time now and wanted to see him "get what he deserved" were pleased with seeing him get hit in the nuts. The best bit was the host of the show saying "Mr. Trickster does not like pretty-boy angels." (in reference to Castiel). It was kind of a sad moment, though, when Dean unknowingly admitted that his parents would still be alive if Sam hadn't been born. Sam being forced to say "I've got genital herpes." in those damn annoying ads you get on TV was unexpected, but very funny. Jared's delivery was what made it so amusing.

I was so happy we got to return to the Supernatural sitcom. I liked Dean demanding to know "How is that funny?" from the audience when Sam said they may be stuck in TV land forever. Interesting to learn what the point of the Trickster doing this to them was. I loved Dean's attitude towards being stuck in a procedural cop show (and his comment about the types who wears sunglasses at night. I'm surprised he didn't reference the Corey Hart song). The CSI-like theme music playing, as Sam and Dean walked in slow-mo was good, as was the way in which Dean talked (I don't watch any of these types of shows, nor do I watch Grey's Anatomy, but nonetheless I still got the references, and they were hilarious). Possibly Sam's funniest moment in the episode was his delivery of, "Well, I say...jackpot." (and his jerky head-turn and walk off camera). The gratuitous zoom-inside-the-victim camera effect was neat. Sam being trapped inside the Impala ala KITT in Knight Rider was good. Sam saying that Dean rummaging around in the boot (and his "Ow!" at Dean slamming it shut) were both funny, as were his "Should I honk?" to Dean and "Eat me." to the Trickster.

As highly amusing as the rest of the episode had been, I'm glad they got serious for the last part of the it, with the Trickster being revealed as Gabriel and him informing the boys the reason for them both being vessels (one for Michael and one for Lucifer). I have no problem with these 'comedy' episodes, so long as they have a point and are actually *funny* - and this one was both. It was a really good episode, after a couple of weeks of average episodes, and the parodies of the different shows were funny without being too much. Both Jared and Jensen were great with the comic timing (as always). I'm sure they had far too much fun filming this. You definitely don't want to change channels during this episode.

Hilarious Spoof.....Winchester Style
boo28810 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
One thing I absolutely LOVE about "Supernatural" is they don't stay all dreary gloom-and-doom. This show has such terrific writers, who let Sam and Deam battle demons and monsters.....but occasionally add humor to keep from staying in a rut.

In this episode, Sam and Dean are transported into the world of Television and they think it's the Trickster at work. The Soap Opera (with the guys playing doctors), Game Show (the hilarious Japanese "Cracker" game)and the absolutely wonderful Knight Rider show with one of the guys as the car were our favorites. This is rounded out by the side-splitting "Genital Herpes" commercial. It seems as though the Trickster is at it again and the guys are forced to play along. The seamless working of the fake Commercial was so terrific, I wondered if we were going into another one after that. Unfortunately, we actually got a real commercial break.

The best trickster episode
CubsandCulture16 March 2020
The concept of Sam and Dean being stuck in TVland not only is really funny but it has just the right edge to it to make it feel like the the trickster. The parodies are all funny. I really liked that they made sure that the real sets ended up being echoed in TVland. With the exception of the French Mistake, this is the most meta-episode and it is really fun on that level. Unlike the French Mistake it isn't just fun. The final reveal, at the time, was a big shock and while it is an obvious retcon it largely feels organic to the series on the whole. The final couple of minutes of this episode are tonally discordant with the parodies and that ends up saying something about fiction. This is probably Carver's best script.

This is an AMAZING episode!

Warning: Spoilers
I loved this episode from the opening sequence! Supernatural has done nothing but surprise me since the first episode. In this episode the brothers catch up with the trickster and must be put through his round of tortures by being out into many different types of TV roles such as being on a parody of Greys anatomy and a game show that turns out to be quite hilarious. I won't spoil the end for you but it's def a must watch episode that is quite humorous. Since during season 5 so far there has been many ups and downs and I'm glad the writers of the show decided to have a little fun with this episode. I also loved how the brothers have seemed to lay off the heavy stuff during this episode just to have a little fun with it, or at least the writers chose to do so. All in all it's a pretty great episode, I know I watched it twice and it was well worth it.

Hilariously epic and meta
shwetafabm14 June 2020
The best part of this episode is its not just a standalone crazy one, though if it was that would be totally fine, it's just a level up when it ties in so well with the main plot, and to think the writers weren't planning this since seaoson 1. All hail the trickster.

Really didn't get any better
bhester08063 January 2021
This episode really is the high point of the show (well the entire 5th season). This is when the writing really had landed they knew who the charterers were, what they wanted them to be and how to get them there. All of the supernatural seasons are good but this season and this specific episode are on the great tier.

A Silly Episode
claudio_carvalho30 January 2012
Dean and Sam come to Ohio and out of the blue, they find that they are trapped in TV land by the Trickster. The powerful being explains to them that they need to participate in the TV show parodies; otherwise they will be strand in TV Land for the rest of their lives. When Castiel comes to the show, the Winchester's brothers believe that the Trickster might not be who they think he is.

"Changing Channels" is one of the silliest episodes of Supernatural. The spoof of a soap opera, a game show, a TV series and a commercial is not funny and the conclusion with the revelation of the true identity of the Trickster is unexpected and intriguing for an angel with such weird powers. My vote is seven.

One of the best satire episodes of all time
Cinebad16 August 2020
Supernatural is pretty experimental with their ways as it deals with the supernatural. But this episode is very different. Every episode with the trickster/Gabriel is a must watch. And this one is the best. If not the best supernatural episode. It plays a parody of guilty pleasure shows, specifically Grey's Anatomy. Which is ironic, as once supernatural gets bought by the cw, it became the show that it poked fun of. But every single second of this show is some of the funniest comedy I have ever seen.

Very funny and entertaining
roadbytheriver23 February 2024
My favorite episode of season 5

The events that Sam and his older brother Dean experience while being trapped in the television world are quite entertaining, and even though I've watched it many times, I still have a fit of laughter every time. One of the best episodes with its parody beginning, music and amazing performance of the actors:-)

Trickster! He plays with the Winchester brothers, but he has to be careful who he plays with.

Dean's buddy Castiel also contributes to this fun episode. It is necessary to appreciate such incredibly enjoyable and unforgettable episodes. Very cleverly well prepared and directed.
