This indy-horror was surprisingly good, given the budget.

Warning: Spoilers
I didn't expect much and typically don't spend my time watching films I don't already have a notion that I'll like, but I was asked to watch and review this film as a favor to one of it's creators (no one mentioned in this review).

They may regret that after reading this review, but you can ignore the hater, this is not a 1-star film, not even close.

First the bad! Obviously, budgeting had a major impact on the filmmaker's decisions, and the decision to use the special effect at the end of the film was not a good one. It should have been omitted entirely. Also, the limited locations, mainly an apartment complex, meant that there were a few too many repetitious shots, looking for some way to fill the space or time.

Some of the dialogue is a bit wooden in parts. Not sure if that is that fault if the actors or script, but at one point I laughed aloud at what meant to be serious dialogue. Unintentional humor is never a good sign.

Now the good. Despite it's failings, this film has some redeeming qualities. Namely, the director's use of light and shadow was particularly effective and, along with the incidental music, managed to create a real sense of unease and suspense.

But the thing I most appreciated was the simplicity of the creature. This was probably the result of budgeting considerations, but the design was genuinely unsettling. Increase its height by another 6" or more and you'll have something quite menacing.

Finally, props to the actor playing the first victim. That was some A+ acting.

I think with a a larger budget a film like this could shine. Shake out some of the fluffy dialogue, make a minor fix to creature design (hands and height), and flesh out it's origin more fully, then we're talking.

6/10.

Creep and atmospheric

Creative title with a very creepy premise this was a well crafted story with solid performances. Beautifully shot especially considering this was made at the height of lockdowns. Excellent work here so if you dig a claustrophobic thriller this is for you!

Living in hell
marceldorian8 July 2022
A new building manager discovers there is something weird going on in the building. One by one the tenants disappear but because of Covid, nobody notices. So, the building manager teams up with some of the tenants to get to the bottom of the mystery.

It's a slow burn thriller where the building acts as a creepy character. Considering the budget limitations, I think this little indie gem will surprise you. If you enjoy indie thrillers, give this one a go.

Timely story!

Really timely story that just pulls you in. Lots of great mystery. The cinematography gives it a gritty, realistic feel. The music adds to the intensity as well.

Fantastic suspense thriller!
azmunfilms18 October 2022
Extramundane, knows how to approach suspense in an interesting and innovative way, this film caught me from the first second in which it presents us with the entrails of the building, which will play an essential role in this story.

The shots are very well defined and flow in tune with an excellent work of music and sound design.

I think that the fact that Joshua Sowden is the writer, director and editor of this feature film is a clear example of the visionary commitment to land an idea as close to how it was conceived, in my humble opinion that is how films have to be done.

I also want to emphasize the great job that was done with that talented cast. The performances are refreshing and the actors are very well connected with their characters, something that I loved is how the characters take long pauses without saying anything but body language or just a small gesture tells us what is impossible to say with words.

If you want to enjoy a good suspense movie that takes advantage of the pandemic to tell us a very original story, Extramundane is the right movie. Completely recommended!

Really Good Indie Thriller
MRP-Ent17 October 2022
A really nice indie thriller set during the pandemic that slowly builds the suspense and doesn't let up. Very atmospheric. The slow burn suspense is definitely enhanced by the cinematography and music. Both are extremely well done. And the interesting way video chats and on screen texts are displayed, truly elevates this from the usual low budget fare.

Admittedly, I'm a sucker for "contained" and isolation films and so may of them fall short and are just plain boring. But this one works really well on all levels. The story, the music, camerawork and direction... recommend this one. It won't disappoint!

Check out the indie thriller Extramundane.

In the indie movie Extramundane, a new building manager during the height of the pandemic takes it upon himself to solve the mystery of why so many people in his building have gone missing. He discovers a dark history of the building and enters a nightmare from which he must fight to escape. I've seen a few ""contained", isolation films that were made during the pandemic and they were not great however this indie film surprised me. The camera work is good, the acting is believable and the writing is not bad. It kept me guessing and the twist at the end is great. Check out the indie thriller Extramundane.

Well done gritty suspense

LIked this movie. A pretty good story that feels contemporary. Acting was also good. Suspense worked well in the story about tenants disappearing from a building. I found it worth a watch and would recommend. Production value really good for an indie.

This film is one that I reviewed on my horror blog and I was happy to do it. Joshua Sowden is a great writer/director, and the cast does a wonderful job telling his story in a visually pleasing film. It's definitely worth checking out this movie on Amazon Prime Video!

A good, creepy suspense thriller set during the more intense covid times. I was pulled in from start to finish, and I appreciated some visual references to some classic horror along the way. Worth checking out.

Smart Filmmaking
jim-thalman20 October 2022
This film is smart and fun to watch. Its sort of like a great mystery, that keeps you guessing until the final revelation......... Nonetheless, Its firmly entrenched in the Horror genre. Lots of creepy moments that encapsulate the feel of loneliness and isolation that we all went through during the height of the pandemic. The characters are cool enough to root for & questionable enough to doubt... I really love how they vacillate between really disturbing to understandably sympathetic..... They're human beings, trekking through a world that is desperate. I'm sincerely impressed by what this team was able to accomplish and hope its the first of many films for them. I'll certainly watch more of what they create.

A great low budget indie horror film!
rzsanzone-736-553201 July 2022
Extramundane (2022) was written, and directed by up-and-coming film maker Joshua Sowden @joshuasow18. It's an independent horror film that, despite its low budget and limited resources-Sowden wrote, directed, and edited the film-it's an original and solid horror film that works on many levels!

Extramundane tells the story about a man named Trevor (Brant Rotnem) who takes a job managing an apartment building during the Covid pandemic. One by one, people in the building disappear. No one notices though due to the isolation everyone's facing. No one, that is, except for Trevor. With the help of a few other tenants, Trevor is determined to get to the bottom of the disappearances.

This film has many strengths. Sowden crafts his content carefully by using the pandemic as an effective backdrop. We see the effect that the stress and isolation have on the building's occupants, an effect that carries viewers through the film. Given that we all were affected by the pandemic, Sowden uses it to make viewers wonder if the mystery Trevor is working to solve is nothing more than the stress and paranoia we all felt in 2020. The film also forces us to consider those who've occupied the spaces we now inhabit. Without revealing too much about the plot, that theme isn't the only one that we see in the movie. While I don't want to say anymore, as a fan of horror, I wasn't disappointed at all with the film's climax.

I also liked how each actor in the film gave it all he/she had. They clearly cared about their roles, and in turn we grow to care about them, too.

There were a few points where the story overextended itself, but not in a way that's too distracting. There were also a few instances of dead silence in the film, but again, weren't too distracting. My one piece of constructive criticism is that viewers get a good look at the source of the mystery very early on; I'd have opted for a much slower burn and buildup to the climax.

Extramundane is the first of what will hopefully be the first of many films Joshua Sowden makes in what is a very promising career.

A suspenseful indie thriller worth watching!
rsmithline5420 October 2022
A new building manager during the height of the pandemic takes it upon himself to solve the mystery of why so many people in his building have gone missing.

The cinematography's film noir style keeps it creepy enough to keep us constantly worry about what is lurking around the corner, behind the door, or under the desk. Everyone is a suspect too, so it was fun to try to figure out who was involved and why. You really start root for the main character and the ending was not what I expected!

I love discovering new indie thrillers with heart and was glad to find this one. Really enjoyed watching this!

Edge of your seat Thriller

This movie was awesome. Not only does it keep you guessing. But its a super creep fest. It has none other than Vincent Coppola in it but also the amazing Brant Rotnem in it. He did a amazing job as well. Highly recommend if you are a thriller horror movie buff like I am.

Great indie find.
Tilman-Borck3 October 2022
A great indie horror movie with good acting and surprising story twists. Wonderful photography and sets. I thought the story developed rather nicely and got me hooked the whole time. It's admirable that they got a movie out about the pandemic so fast. Interesting to see a reflection on current events. I also liked how the suspense slowly developed. This kind of movie needs more exposure. Instead of the boring Hollywood formulaic plots this movie offers a fresh perspective on life in general and in particular during a pandemic. Since we all have to suffer through this, it offers some relieve to see that the protagonists got it even worse than us.

Great Self Contained Thriller
AboutFaceMediaAFM17 October 2022
Loved the cinematography on this. You can tell they put a lot into it. It has a gritty feel and look. The sound quality was also great.

It's a bit of a slow burn with the Alfred Hitchcock feel to it, which I love. The main character, Trevor, is absolutely believable in portraying down on his luck and trying to get his life together. I enjoyed the other tenants as well, expecially the annoyance at hearing a noise and telling the new guy to do his job and figure out the problem.

As far as indie horrors go, this one is a winner. I would have liked a little more of the supernatural parts but that is just a preferance not a dig against the film itself. Overall, great job.

A Suspenseful Indie Flick
mrtheflip30 November 2022
"Extramundane" was written, directed, filmed and edited by Joshua Sowden. The suspenseful independent movie stars Brant Rotnem as Trevor Wilkinson, a man who takes a new position as a property manager during the height of a pandemic. Trevor does not know the building's dark history and when the tenets begin disappearing, he takes it upon himself to solve what is going on.

I need to start by giving huge props to Sowden's cinematography, which is not only beautiful but it sets the perfect mood of isolation. This helps pull us into the mystery of the building, and helps bring it to life as its own character. I love when independent movies look and sound fantastic. Watch this if you are looking for a thriller that keeps you in the dark as the story unfolds.

Rounding out the cast is Craig Gellis, Brock Jones, Cherie Corinne Rice, Vinnie Coppola, and Tony Bartele. This suspense feature is available on Tubi and YouTube.

Not Bad For A Low Budget Indie
ladymidath1 October 2022
I found this on Tubi and I thought I would take a look at it. Sometimes you can find some real gems on Tubi and Plex but more often than not, there is a lot of crap as well.

This film however is very good, in fact, better than I though it would be. The only problem though is that it does suffer for the low budget and I think that with a bigger budget, the film would be a little more polished. Having said that though, the acting is great, and the camera work is excellent for a one man job.

The setting is mostly centred around an apartment building yet it doesn't feel too claustrophobic. It is set during the pandemic, (which is still going BTW) which adds an added layer to the tension and anxiety that the movie builds so nicely.

If you don'y mind low low budget movies, this is one worth watching.

Anything But Mundane
adamvrosales3 July 2022
Very good film and a fun watch! Loved all the performances; Jerry was very unsettling. The director does a great job of keeping the toe-curling, suspenseful feeling you crave from the first half of horror movies alive throughout the whole experience, while still letting the horror build into a crescendo. A+!!

Terrific Movie!!
AtTheMovies5228 July 2022
This is one of those rare indie films that once you start watching... It never lets you go! I truly enjoyed this film from beginning to end! Not only me, my wife too who is a hard sell for most any movie we watch. It was my evening to make the pick... Thankfully this film was a hit with my wife, otherwise it would've been a very chilly evening.

Excellent horror-thriller
directortim201228 June 2022
Suspenseful, scary, surprises. All the elements of a really good horror film are here and this movie really delivers on them. It's a story that totally pulls you in and is also great to look at. The pandemic backdrop might be a buzzkill in less skilled hands. But the sense of off-ness and isolation that it brings to this story makes it completely work. Terrific acting and storytelling combine to make this a riveting horror film!

Tempting Horror

Extreme close-ups were mesmerizing and gave us insight into the inner life of the characters, which only worked because the actors were so good. Kudos to Joshua Sowden who did it all...screenplay, director, camera, editor.

A rare indie gem!
beemtoaustin6 February 2023
A darkly funny covid indie from writer/director Joshua Sowden who quite cleverly manages to weave and sustain remarkable tension and suspense within the near-claustrophobic confines of a covid distressed LA apartment complex ripe for fear and trepidation. I could be wrong, but it wouldn't surprise me if Sowden took some of his inspiration from Polanski's earlier films. In fact, the excellent and at times funny cast (see Covid Ass Kicker) can hold their own against many a big budget - big name production. Good camera work and skilled preparation make it easy to loose yourself in this well-paced horror-thriller. The awards and nominations are certainly deserved with more to come I am sure. Enjoy as I did.
