Based on the Fat Vampire books. The first episode looks to have a shallow premise. It reminded me little of the BBC series Being Human but less quirkier and funnier.
Reginald (Jacob Batalon) works at Slush Shack, has low self esteem because of his weight issues. The supervisor Todd constantly fat shames him.
Reginald has a crush on fellow worker Sarah (Em Haine.) They have established a chemistry as they play around with song titles but Reginald is afraid to ask her out.
That all changes when he meets enigmatic Maurice (Mandela Van Peebles.) He gives Reginald the confidence to ask Sarah out and she accepts.
Unfortunately the date is a disaster, before Reginald gets there he is attacked by some strange people who know Maurice.
Lying injured, it turns out that Maurice is a vampire and now can save him by making Reginald a vampire.
The joke of this horror comedy is not only Reginald coming to terms of his new life of being the undead. It is also vampires regard themselves as part of the beautiful people. Reginald is destined to remain an outsider, a cross he has to bear.
Helped by charming performances from Batalon, Haine and Van Peebles. You do wonder how much teeth the central premise has in subsequent episodes.
